The mystery of what happened in the hours before her death and just who was responsible has evaded investigators for decades. This is the story of a missing girl, which hit too close to home, so soon after another young boy went missing, leaving a community reeling.

Network INDEP Podcasts with the Twist. Hello, Hello, Welcome to

12
00:01:13.840 --> 00:01:16.560
the next chapter in the Book of the Dead. Just

13
00:01:16.840 --> 00:01:20.840
shy of. Two years after the nineteen eighty two disappearance

14
00:01:20.959 --> 00:01:24.359
of twelve year old Johnny Gosh while delivering newspapers in

15
00:01:24.439 --> 00:01:31.120
West de Moines, Iowa, two other teenagers vanished, one another male,

16
00:01:31.519 --> 00:01:35.200
also a newspaper delivery boy named Eugene Martin in nineteen

17
00:01:35.239 --> 00:01:39.599
eighty four, and in nineteen eighty three, a teenage girl

18
00:01:40.000 --> 00:01:45.239
sixty six miles away from Johnny's last known sighting seventeen

19
00:01:45.319 --> 00:01:51.319
years old, beautiful with an incredibly vibrant personality. She did

20
00:01:51.319 --> 00:01:54.799
her laundry one April night, placed her clothes in her car,

21
00:01:55.319 --> 00:01:59.879
and then she was gone. Over four decades later, her

22
00:02:00.000 --> 00:02:04.400
her case has yet to be solved. While likely not

23
00:02:04.480 --> 00:02:09.039
connected to each other, it's unbelievably unsettling that three people

24
00:02:09.280 --> 00:02:12.800
under the age of eighteen all vanished in such a

25
00:02:12.919 --> 00:02:17.039
short amount of time, All of their cases are unsolved,

26
00:02:17.639 --> 00:02:22.000
and only one family has been able to bury their child.

27
00:02:22.639 --> 00:02:27.520
This is the murder of Kurinn Perry. Corinn Elaine Perry

28
00:02:27.599 --> 00:02:30.599
was born on August twenty eighth, nineteen sixty five to

29
00:02:30.680 --> 00:02:33.840
Donald and Barbara Perry at a Libyan Air Force base

30
00:02:34.280 --> 00:02:37.960
where her father was stationed with the Air Force. Kurin

31
00:02:38.120 --> 00:02:41.400
was the youngest of four children, all girls, and after

32
00:02:41.520 --> 00:02:45.039
many years of moving around for Donald's job, the family

33
00:02:45.120 --> 00:02:50.800
ultimately settled in Creston, Iowa after his retirement. Growing up,

34
00:02:50.960 --> 00:02:54.719
not only was she described as beautiful with long, strawberry

35
00:02:54.759 --> 00:02:59.400
blonde hair and gray eyes, Korinn had a big personality

36
00:02:59.639 --> 00:03:04.560
and she was incredibly intelligent. Her father said that Karin

37
00:03:04.680 --> 00:03:07.599
had grown up with the love of books endote. She

38
00:03:07.840 --> 00:03:11.400
liked to dream, to make believe she never left home

39
00:03:11.479 --> 00:03:13.919
except to maybe visit her sisters or to go to

40
00:03:13.919 --> 00:03:19.080
a slumber party. Her older sister, Letitia told Dateline quote

41
00:03:19.439 --> 00:03:23.560
she had everything going for her. She was this vivacious,

42
00:03:23.639 --> 00:03:27.719
smart girl who loved being on stage. That was her thing.

43
00:03:29.000 --> 00:03:31.960
When Karin was a young teenager, Donald and Barbara divorced,

44
00:03:32.080 --> 00:03:34.639
and Karin ended up living with her mother, who was

45
00:03:34.680 --> 00:03:38.039
a home health aid for Adams County, while Donald moved

46
00:03:38.039 --> 00:03:42.039
about fifteen minutes away to Kent. As she got older,

47
00:03:42.080 --> 00:03:45.039
she loved makeup and she was very close with her

48
00:03:45.080 --> 00:03:49.319
older sisters. Karin would go on to attend Creston High School,

49
00:03:49.400 --> 00:03:52.599
where she not only excelled in her classes, but she

50
00:03:52.759 --> 00:03:57.319
thrived in theater, acting in several school plays and participating

51
00:03:57.360 --> 00:04:01.599
in her school's mime troop. She also competed in various

52
00:04:01.599 --> 00:04:06.759
speech competitions, winning awards for speech and acting. By the

53
00:04:06.800 --> 00:04:09.840
time nineteen eighty three year old Around Cournn was seventeen

54
00:04:09.919 --> 00:04:12.639
years old and in her senior year of high school,

55
00:04:13.759 --> 00:04:17.160
Her sister, Letitia nineteen, had recently moved out and had

56
00:04:17.279 --> 00:04:20.920
enrolled in classes at Southwest Community College, according to NBC,

57
00:04:21.560 --> 00:04:23.600
but she came home frequently to spend time with her

58
00:04:23.639 --> 00:04:28.199
younger sister. This was a very exciting time for Curin.

59
00:04:28.639 --> 00:04:31.720
In early April, just a month away from graduation, she

60
00:04:31.800 --> 00:04:34.079
had gotten word that she had earned a scholarship to

61
00:04:34.120 --> 00:04:37.279
Simpson College in Iowa, and she was planning on double

62
00:04:37.319 --> 00:04:41.600
majoring in psychology and acting. By all accounts, of which

63
00:04:41.680 --> 00:04:45.800
there are an alarming few, April seventeenth, nineteen eighty three

64
00:04:46.000 --> 00:04:49.639
was an ordinary day for Curin. While there is so

65
00:04:49.800 --> 00:04:53.319
little information on this case and on current in general,

66
00:04:53.839 --> 00:04:57.040
what is known is that on that Sunday, Kurin had

67
00:04:57.120 --> 00:05:00.120
laundry to do. At around six ten in the even

68
00:05:00.319 --> 00:05:02.920
she said goodbye to Barbara and Letitia, who was visiting,

69
00:05:03.560 --> 00:05:06.120
grabbed her clothes and pursed, and took the car she

70
00:05:06.199 --> 00:05:09.319
shared with her mom to Highlander Laundromat, a coin operated

71
00:05:09.399 --> 00:05:13.879
laundry facility on Highway thirty four. As anyone who's ever

72
00:05:14.040 --> 00:05:17.480
don laundry at a laundromat knows, you're usually there for

73
00:05:17.560 --> 00:05:21.480
a couple of hours, and the time spent at Highlanders

74
00:05:21.639 --> 00:05:25.839
was as one would expect whenness is reported seeing Korin

75
00:05:26.000 --> 00:05:28.399
washing her clothing and then folding it when it was

76
00:05:28.480 --> 00:05:32.319
dry in an adjacent room. After which she left some

77
00:05:32.519 --> 00:05:36.680
time between eight thirty and nine pm, according to NBC.

78
00:05:37.040 --> 00:05:40.560
As the hours ticked by, Letitia and Barbara grew concerned,

79
00:05:41.560 --> 00:05:44.720
Karin had been gone far longer than expected and it

80
00:05:44.800 --> 00:05:48.839
wasn't like her. Letitia said quote When Karin didn't come

81
00:05:48.879 --> 00:05:52.079
home that night, we started to worry. It got so late.

82
00:05:52.120 --> 00:05:55.639
We started calling her friends as they called around, and

83
00:05:55.680 --> 00:05:58.879
her friends all responded with they hadn't seen Korin. That

84
00:05:59.040 --> 00:06:03.360
concern and worried turned to panic. The crest and police

85
00:06:03.360 --> 00:06:06.680
were called soon after, but the police were less than helpful.

86
00:06:07.680 --> 00:06:10.240
Though her family didn't want to believe that something terrible

87
00:06:10.279 --> 00:06:13.560
had happened and that maybe Kuran had been driving around

88
00:06:14.079 --> 00:06:16.120
and the police would come across her and let her

89
00:06:16.160 --> 00:06:21.319
know her mother was worried, the police were unconcerned. Letitia

90
00:06:21.399 --> 00:06:25.399
said of the police's initial response, quote, it was really frustrating.

91
00:06:25.639 --> 00:06:28.759
I just remember getting really upset with each question they asked.

92
00:06:29.439 --> 00:06:31.800
We were wasting time and I just wanted to find

93
00:06:31.800 --> 00:06:35.519
my sister. That night, the police dismissed the report of

94
00:06:35.600 --> 00:06:38.720
Kurin being missing, reportedly believing her to be a runaway,

95
00:06:39.240 --> 00:06:43.199
and critical hours were wasted by that dismissal. That could

96
00:06:43.199 --> 00:06:46.319
have been used to look for her, especially when no

97
00:06:46.360 --> 00:06:48.879
one in Karin's life believed that she would have just

98
00:06:49.000 --> 00:06:52.879
up and left with no word. The next day, found

99
00:06:52.920 --> 00:06:55.800
in the parking lot of the laundromat was Curran's car.

100
00:06:57.000 --> 00:06:59.759
While it's unknown who discovered it, what is known is

101
00:06:59.759 --> 00:07:04.800
that inside, clearly visible was Current's clothing, folded and neatly

102
00:07:04.800 --> 00:07:08.360
placed in a box on the seat. What was not

103
00:07:08.519 --> 00:07:13.360
located in or near the car was her purse. Even

104
00:07:13.399 --> 00:07:16.120
though the discovery of the car strongly supported the idea

105
00:07:16.160 --> 00:07:18.800
that something had happened to Kurin and she hadn't just

106
00:07:18.879 --> 00:07:22.439
left of her own volition, the fact was, even if

107
00:07:22.439 --> 00:07:25.959
the police took the missing person's report seriously that first day,

108
00:07:26.680 --> 00:07:29.879
most law enforcement agencies in the state were required to

109
00:07:29.920 --> 00:07:33.519
wait seventy two hours before asking the Iowa Division of

110
00:07:33.560 --> 00:07:38.639
Criminal Investigation or DCI, for assistance if foul play was

111
00:07:38.680 --> 00:07:44.160
suspected to be involved. Sometime shortly after the car was discovered,

112
00:07:44.279 --> 00:07:47.800
investigators began to look for any sign of Current or

113
00:07:48.000 --> 00:07:50.879
any evidence as to where she could be, and they

114
00:07:50.920 --> 00:07:53.399
spoke with witnesses who had been at the laundrymat at

115
00:07:53.399 --> 00:07:57.399
the time Current was there. A couple of witnesses were

116
00:07:57.399 --> 00:08:00.120
called seeing her finishing up her laundry, and they they

117
00:08:00.120 --> 00:08:04.759
also noticed a man leaving shortly after her. According to

118
00:08:04.759 --> 00:08:07.319
the Des Moines Register, the man was described as being

119
00:08:07.319 --> 00:08:10.560
in his early to mid twenties, approximately six feet tall,

120
00:08:10.720 --> 00:08:15.439
clean shaven, and wearing glasses. Investigators did look for this

121
00:08:15.560 --> 00:08:18.199
man but were never able to find him, and it

122
00:08:18.240 --> 00:08:21.800
is unknown of his departure right after Karin was a coincidence,

123
00:08:21.959 --> 00:08:26.160
or if he was somehow involved in her disappearance. About

124
00:08:26.160 --> 00:08:29.240
a week after she disappeared, on a bridge about nine

125
00:08:29.279 --> 00:08:33.639
miles away, midway between Kent and Lennox, the missing handbag

126
00:08:33.759 --> 00:08:39.200
was found. Inside was Karin's license, her makeup, and her glasses,

127
00:08:39.720 --> 00:08:43.639
all of which were on damaged. Apparently, the bag had

128
00:08:43.679 --> 00:08:47.080
been found by someone soon after Karin's disappearance, but they

129
00:08:47.080 --> 00:08:51.440
didn't realize the significance until reading the paper. According to

130
00:08:51.480 --> 00:08:54.159
the Des Moines Register, Barbara believed the purse had been

131
00:08:54.200 --> 00:08:57.039
placed on the bridge rather than tossed, due to its

132
00:08:57.080 --> 00:09:00.960
contents not being broken. But notably missing from the bag

133
00:09:01.000 --> 00:09:03.879
were photos of Currance friends, which she carried with her

134
00:09:03.960 --> 00:09:07.720
quite frequently. The discovery of the makeup and glasses was

135
00:09:07.720 --> 00:09:12.120
a particular concern to Curran's family. Corinn, first of all,

136
00:09:12.200 --> 00:09:14.879
had bad eyesight, and while she could get by all

137
00:09:14.960 --> 00:09:17.519
right without them, her family did not believe that she

138
00:09:17.559 --> 00:09:20.559
could go very long without meeting them, and this was

139
00:09:20.600 --> 00:09:25.440
her only pair Carin. Also, as I mentioned, loved makeup

140
00:09:25.559 --> 00:09:29.159
and was always wearing it. Latitia said when her sister's

141
00:09:29.159 --> 00:09:32.679
belongings were found, quote, my little sister was all about

142
00:09:32.679 --> 00:09:35.960
the way she looked. She loved makeup and never left

143
00:09:35.960 --> 00:09:39.840
the house without makeup, and her purse while it was

144
00:09:39.879 --> 00:09:42.759
filled with her makeup. To find that purse with her

145
00:09:42.799 --> 00:09:47.159
makeup just proves that she didn't run away. Now, there

146
00:09:47.279 --> 00:09:50.320
was some speculation that with the purse being found midway

147
00:09:50.360 --> 00:09:53.399
to Kent, that perhaps Karin was going to visit her father,

148
00:09:54.039 --> 00:09:55.919
but she would have no reason to leave her car

149
00:09:55.960 --> 00:09:59.159
behind to do so while he was only a fifteen

150
00:09:59.159 --> 00:10:01.679
minute drive away. To walk all the way to Kent

151
00:10:01.840 --> 00:10:06.399
from Creston took over three hours. No one would choose

152
00:10:06.440 --> 00:10:09.200
to take that walk at night, especially when they had

153
00:10:09.240 --> 00:10:13.559
a working vehicle available to them. As the weeks passed,

154
00:10:13.679 --> 00:10:17.200
searches were conducted in nearby areas looking for any sign

155
00:10:17.279 --> 00:10:19.840
of Krinn and the body of water that ran under

156
00:10:19.840 --> 00:10:23.919
the bridge. The West Platte River was searched multiple times,

157
00:10:24.039 --> 00:10:27.279
with the focus being downriver in case Karin had fallen

158
00:10:27.279 --> 00:10:32.080
in and was swept downstream dawn. For his part, walked

159
00:10:32.120 --> 00:10:34.639
and drove over miles of back roads to look for

160
00:10:34.720 --> 00:10:38.360
his daughter, searching empty buildings and ditches, as well as

161
00:10:38.360 --> 00:10:41.960
handing out countless flyers and newspaper clippings to anyone who

162
00:10:42.000 --> 00:10:46.360
would take them. Also formed was the nonprofit Kurinn Perry

163
00:10:46.440 --> 00:10:50.000
Support Group Incorporated, comprised of her family and friends, as

164
00:10:50.080 --> 00:10:53.320
well as community members who gathered weekly to strategize on

165
00:10:53.399 --> 00:10:55.639
different ways to get the word out about her case

166
00:10:56.200 --> 00:10:59.440
and places to look for her. Of the support group,

167
00:10:59.480 --> 00:11:02.679
Barbara pass He told the Des Moines Register quote, I'm thrilled.

168
00:11:03.039 --> 00:11:04.919
The first night we had the meeting, I had no

169
00:11:05.000 --> 00:11:09.320
idea who'd come. Then they started streaming in they did come.

170
00:11:10.759 --> 00:11:13.440
The support group was inspired by the Goshes, who also

171
00:11:13.559 --> 00:11:16.759
formed their own nonprofit in the wake of their son's disappearance,

172
00:11:17.320 --> 00:11:19.840
and they offered help and support to the Paris after

173
00:11:19.919 --> 00:11:24.039
Kurin had got missing. Barbara hoped that the nonprofit would

174
00:11:24.080 --> 00:11:26.600
encourage donations to come in to assist in the funding

175
00:11:26.639 --> 00:11:29.279
of a private investigator that had been hired in order

176
00:11:29.320 --> 00:11:34.080
to help find Kurin. Regarding the hiring of the private investigator,

177
00:11:34.200 --> 00:11:37.840
who was never named in any publications during the investigation,

178
00:11:38.559 --> 00:11:41.200
there was a bit of a minor discourse surrounding the

179
00:11:41.240 --> 00:11:45.879
idea outsource help. Kristin Cole Brown, the spokesperson for New

180
00:11:45.919 --> 00:11:49.879
York's nonprofit Fine Children, Incorporated, said it's never considered a

181
00:11:49.919 --> 00:11:54.480
bad idea, but warned of possibilities of being exploited, saying, quote,

182
00:11:54.759 --> 00:11:57.720
there's absolutely nothing wrong with parents asking for the help

183
00:11:57.759 --> 00:12:02.919
of private investigators. We always encourage parents' participation because they

184
00:12:02.919 --> 00:12:06.360
are the most motivated. But the problem is is that

185
00:12:06.399 --> 00:12:10.559
they are so vulnerable to exploitation. There are so few

186
00:12:10.600 --> 00:12:15.879
investigators that have a proven track record. Not so fond

187
00:12:15.919 --> 00:12:18.519
of the idea, though, was the recently retired chief of

188
00:12:18.559 --> 00:12:22.879
the IOWA DCI, Gerald Shanahan, who said, quote, work within

189
00:12:23.000 --> 00:12:27.080
the system, stay with public authorities. I have no objection

190
00:12:27.159 --> 00:12:31.159
to private investigators. Any help would be helpful, but people

191
00:12:31.240 --> 00:12:34.399
end up paying twice with taxes for the police and

192
00:12:34.519 --> 00:12:39.200
money for the investigators. Barber's stance, though, was that while

193
00:12:39.240 --> 00:12:42.240
she really believed the local investigators as well as the

194
00:12:42.320 --> 00:12:45.759
DCI were doing a wonderful job in working their hardest

195
00:12:45.799 --> 00:12:49.559
to find her daughter, the extra help was absolutely needed.

196
00:12:50.799 --> 00:12:53.840
In addition to raising funds for the private investigator, the

197
00:12:54.000 --> 00:12:57.320
organization also raised money to help fund a reward to

198
00:12:57.480 --> 00:13:01.519
anyone that could find current. By the time Karin had

199
00:13:01.519 --> 00:13:04.039
been missing for two months, the reward money stood at

200
00:13:04.080 --> 00:13:06.879
one hundred and thirty eight dollars and fifty five cents,

201
00:13:07.320 --> 00:13:09.759
and this was later bolstered by another one hundred and

202
00:13:09.759 --> 00:13:12.559
three dollars and fifty five cents from the Cromwell United

203
00:13:12.639 --> 00:13:16.559
Church of Price Bible School. This money was in addition

204
00:13:16.679 --> 00:13:19.279
to the two thousand, five hundred dollars that the family

205
00:13:19.399 --> 00:13:22.480
raised for a reward after the third week with the

206
00:13:22.600 --> 00:13:26.240
help from the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Creston.

207
00:13:26.759 --> 00:13:30.720
According to the Daily Reporter, the group also planned dinners

208
00:13:30.720 --> 00:13:35.679
and dances to assist in raising more funds. Karin's family

209
00:13:35.720 --> 00:13:39.039
did hold meetings every week. The room filled with photos

210
00:13:39.080 --> 00:13:42.480
of Kurn and excerpts from her poetry, as well as

211
00:13:42.480 --> 00:13:45.399
fake flowers to symbolize that her loved one's hope would

212
00:13:45.440 --> 00:13:50.279
never die. Letitia also faithfully wrote down all the goings

213
00:13:50.279 --> 00:13:53.679
on around Creston, which was a very small town, in

214
00:13:53.720 --> 00:13:56.639
a notebook, so that when Korn came home, she could

215
00:13:56.679 --> 00:13:59.200
be caught up on all the small town gossip, who

216
00:13:59.240 --> 00:14:03.159
got married, who divorced, and who moved where. One month

217
00:14:03.200 --> 00:14:07.519
after Carind disappeared, Iowa Governor Terry Branstead conditionally approved a

218
00:14:07.559 --> 00:14:10.840
proposal to remove the seventy two hour hold that some

219
00:14:11.000 --> 00:14:14.399
agencies were required to wait before seeking help from DCI

220
00:14:14.480 --> 00:14:18.919
in missing persons cases was suspected foul play. This was

221
00:14:18.960 --> 00:14:21.399
done in the hopes that it would prevent delays in

222
00:14:21.519 --> 00:14:25.519
other cases, as it had in currents. This came from

223
00:14:25.600 --> 00:14:28.799
pressure from the Perry family after they were vocal in

224
00:14:28.879 --> 00:14:32.840
their frustration that investigators did not take their original report

225
00:14:33.000 --> 00:14:38.759
seriously hindering the first critical hours in the investigation. Just

226
00:14:38.799 --> 00:14:41.840
a few weeks later, on May twenty fifth, Branstead declared

227
00:14:41.879 --> 00:14:45.399
the day as being National Missing Children's Day. The parents

228
00:14:45.440 --> 00:14:48.320
of Johnny Gosh, Barbara, and Letitia, as well as the

229
00:14:48.320 --> 00:14:52.759
directors of Child find attended the proclamation. This was done

230
00:14:52.799 --> 00:14:56.279
in conjunction with President Ronald Reagan's own proclamation on the

231
00:14:56.360 --> 00:14:59.360
same day in memory of six year old Eton Pats

232
00:14:59.399 --> 00:15:01.840
who disappeared from a New York street corner on May

233
00:15:01.879 --> 00:15:05.799
twenty fifth, nineteen seventy nine. According to the Office of

234
00:15:05.840 --> 00:15:09.240
Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention, the day is dedicated to

235
00:15:09.320 --> 00:15:13.639
quote encouraging parents, guardians and caretakers, and others concerned with

236
00:15:13.679 --> 00:15:17.159
the well being of children to make child safety a priority.

237
00:15:18.279 --> 00:15:22.360
Ten months into the investigation, by February of nineteen eighty four,

238
00:15:23.000 --> 00:15:26.080
no headway had been made in Kurin's case, though the

239
00:15:26.120 --> 00:15:29.519
police did continue operating under the assumption that current had

240
00:15:29.519 --> 00:15:34.279
been abducted. While investigators were still interested in speaking with

241
00:15:34.320 --> 00:15:36.759
the man who may or may not have followed her

242
00:15:36.759 --> 00:15:39.559
out of the laundromat, no one had come forward with

243
00:15:39.639 --> 00:15:42.159
his identity, and it didn't seem like it was a

244
00:15:42.159 --> 00:15:46.039
big priority to find him. With so little evidence to

245
00:15:46.120 --> 00:15:49.200
point police in the right direction, the nonprofits sent and

246
00:15:49.279 --> 00:15:54.480
put up flyers wherever they could, truck stops, hospitals, police departments, theaters,

247
00:15:54.720 --> 00:15:57.720
and even optical shops, as her family believed that at

248
00:15:57.720 --> 00:16:01.360
some point Kurin would definitely need a new pair of glasses.

249
00:16:02.720 --> 00:16:05.399
These flyers and photos went out all over the country,

250
00:16:05.440 --> 00:16:08.399
and police did have quite a few tips come in,

251
00:16:08.399 --> 00:16:11.600
including from an optician in Missouri and three tips from

252
00:16:11.639 --> 00:16:15.759
officers who had reported finding human remains, but none of

253
00:16:15.799 --> 00:16:19.840
the tips panned out. The fall after Kuran disappeared, when

254
00:16:19.919 --> 00:16:23.000
hunting season began, flyers and notices were put up in

255
00:16:23.080 --> 00:16:25.840
various motels for the hunters and trappers that came from

256
00:16:25.879 --> 00:16:28.240
out of town for them to be on the lookout

257
00:16:28.320 --> 00:16:30.960
for any sign of Curin or what may have happened

258
00:16:30.960 --> 00:16:35.399
to her, but no additional information came from that. In

259
00:16:35.440 --> 00:16:38.240
September of nineteen eighty four, when Kuran had been missing

260
00:16:38.279 --> 00:16:41.480
for almost a year and a half, Barbara Perry received

261
00:16:41.480 --> 00:16:43.919
a strange phone call from a man who claimed to

262
00:16:43.960 --> 00:16:47.440
have seen her daughter. The man called at six a m.

263
00:16:47.639 --> 00:16:50.440
Waking Barbara, but hung up before it could be determined

264
00:16:50.559 --> 00:16:54.200
if the call was a cruel prank or real. Barbara

265
00:16:54.279 --> 00:16:57.480
said quote he asked for a Curran. He seemed very definite.

266
00:16:58.080 --> 00:17:00.440
I said she wasn't here right now, and he started

267
00:17:00.440 --> 00:17:03.240
to hang up. I asked him how he knew Kurin,

268
00:17:03.320 --> 00:17:05.039
and he said he'd seen her in the last couple

269
00:17:05.079 --> 00:17:08.759
of days in Creston. Then he hung up. The Creston

270
00:17:08.799 --> 00:17:11.799
assistant police chief said investigators didn't know what to make

271
00:17:11.839 --> 00:17:14.279
of the call based on the little information that Barbara

272
00:17:14.359 --> 00:17:16.720
was able to get, and they urged the public to

273
00:17:16.759 --> 00:17:20.000
call if they had any information, but no leads came

274
00:17:20.039 --> 00:17:23.559
of it. Barbara was not the only one who received

275
00:17:23.559 --> 00:17:27.680
a strange call, though. Soon after Kurin had been reported missing,

276
00:17:27.799 --> 00:17:31.839
her father Don had received strange calls as well. He

277
00:17:31.880 --> 00:17:34.240
told the Des Moines Register that on April twenty seventh

278
00:17:34.240 --> 00:17:36.920
of nineteen eighty three, he had received a call late

279
00:17:36.960 --> 00:17:39.599
in the evening by what sounded like a young woman.

280
00:17:40.440 --> 00:17:43.680
They said quote Kurrinn was nine miles south of Ossola,

281
00:17:43.920 --> 00:17:46.400
but Don couldn't be sure if the caller was current

282
00:17:46.559 --> 00:17:50.480
or not. The police had searched the area indicated, but

283
00:17:50.680 --> 00:17:54.640
nothing had been found, and Don also received a voicemail

284
00:17:54.680 --> 00:17:57.839
that was hard to understand, but he believed the caller

285
00:17:57.880 --> 00:18:02.000
repeated the phrase it's not easy in a whisper. But

286
00:18:02.079 --> 00:18:05.839
the identity of this caller was also never found. After

287
00:18:05.960 --> 00:18:08.480
nineteen months of holding out hope that Karin would be

288
00:18:08.519 --> 00:18:12.480
found alive, a devastating discovery was made on November third,

289
00:18:12.720 --> 00:18:17.799
nineteen eighty four, six and a half miles northeast from Lenox,

290
00:18:18.119 --> 00:18:22.000
just south of Creston two teenage pheasant hunters were walking

291
00:18:22.039 --> 00:18:25.759
through a stream when they came across human remains comprised

292
00:18:25.759 --> 00:18:28.880
of a skull in a few bones. The area in

293
00:18:28.920 --> 00:18:31.039
which the remains were found was in a heavily wooded

294
00:18:31.079 --> 00:18:34.319
area near a railroad right of way, barely a mile

295
00:18:34.400 --> 00:18:37.720
from the bridge where Karin's purse had been found. The

296
00:18:37.799 --> 00:18:41.039
remains were also upriver from where the initial searches had

297
00:18:41.079 --> 00:18:44.240
been concentrated, and the community was sure that Karin had

298
00:18:44.279 --> 00:18:49.319
been found even before a positive identification was made. According

299
00:18:49.319 --> 00:18:52.839
to Dateline, Latitia said, quote, everyone in this area knew

300
00:18:52.880 --> 00:18:55.720
about Karin, and I think they knew right away that

301
00:18:55.759 --> 00:18:59.359
it was her. A few days after they were found,

302
00:18:59.440 --> 00:19:03.279
after using dental records to make an identification, the remains

303
00:19:03.279 --> 00:19:07.920
were positively identified as Karin Parry. When Letitia was notified

304
00:19:07.920 --> 00:19:10.559
of the news by her mother, she said quote, I

305
00:19:10.640 --> 00:19:12.759
was in another part of Iowa at a friend's house

306
00:19:12.920 --> 00:19:15.920
when my mom called. She told me Karin's body had

307
00:19:15.960 --> 00:19:19.039
been found. I hit the floor, I dropped the phone.

308
00:19:19.640 --> 00:19:23.759
I couldn't breathe or think my sister was gone. Even

309
00:19:23.839 --> 00:19:26.480
though Karin's remains had been found and some clothing that

310
00:19:26.559 --> 00:19:29.720
was determined to be hers was found nearby. Police had

311
00:19:29.839 --> 00:19:32.720
very little to go on regarding cause of death or

312
00:19:32.759 --> 00:19:35.559
even how her remains had gotten there in the first place.

313
00:19:36.759 --> 00:19:40.599
Dciagent Sam Swain told the des Wine Register that because

314
00:19:40.640 --> 00:19:42.920
of how long the bones and clothing had been exposed

315
00:19:42.960 --> 00:19:46.640
to the elements, likely the entire time Karin had been missing,

316
00:19:47.079 --> 00:19:49.920
they were in a very degraded condition, which made testing

317
00:19:49.960 --> 00:19:54.720
near and possible. Unfortunately, because of the condition of the remains,

318
00:19:54.799 --> 00:19:57.880
pathologists were unable to determine a cause of death, but

319
00:19:58.119 --> 00:20:02.319
investigators did believe that this was a homicide with a

320
00:20:02.400 --> 00:20:05.640
lack of evidence. President at the grave site, investigators announced

321
00:20:05.640 --> 00:20:07.960
that they would be increasing their efforts to find the

322
00:20:08.000 --> 00:20:11.839
mystery man that had been seen following Current and following

323
00:20:11.839 --> 00:20:14.720
the announcement of Kern's death, Creston High School started a

324
00:20:14.799 --> 00:20:17.960
drama scholarship in her name, and the community hoped that

325
00:20:18.039 --> 00:20:20.440
soon the police would be able to provide answers to

326
00:20:20.480 --> 00:20:24.000
the family. As the years passed, though, those answers would

327
00:20:24.039 --> 00:20:27.960
never come. In two thousand and nine, long after Current's

328
00:20:28.000 --> 00:20:31.160
case had been cold, the DCI established a cold case unit,

329
00:20:31.240 --> 00:20:34.920
prioritizing one hundred and fifty on solved cases Currents being

330
00:20:34.920 --> 00:20:38.000
one of them. The hope was that advancements in DNA

331
00:20:38.079 --> 00:20:41.160
technology would allow for these cases to be solved, or

332
00:20:41.240 --> 00:20:45.240
at the very least more progress would be made. Although

333
00:20:45.240 --> 00:20:47.440
the funding from the federal grants used for the cold

334
00:20:47.440 --> 00:20:51.079
case unit had been exhausted by twenty eleven, new agents

335
00:20:51.079 --> 00:20:54.359
were continuously assigned to these cases as new leads came

336
00:20:54.440 --> 00:20:58.359
up and more technological advancements were made, but Current's case

337
00:20:58.400 --> 00:21:03.039
has still never been sold, though investigators still urge people

338
00:21:03.119 --> 00:21:08.079
that may have information to come forward. DCI Assistant director

339
00:21:08.200 --> 00:21:12.279
Mitch Mortfetz said, quote in Miss Perry's investigation, just like

340
00:21:12.359 --> 00:21:16.839
any other enresult investigation, we strongly urge anyone with information

341
00:21:16.960 --> 00:21:21.559
to contact us with any information they may have. Oftentimes

342
00:21:21.599 --> 00:21:24.119
people feel that the information they have is not worthy

343
00:21:24.119 --> 00:21:28.119
of blondeforcement attention, or it is not relevant. My statement

344
00:21:28.119 --> 00:21:30.640
to them is let law enforcement be the judge of that,

345
00:21:31.160 --> 00:21:34.440
and no piece of information is ever not worthy or

346
00:21:34.480 --> 00:21:39.200
irrelevant in an investigation, and especially a cold case investigation.

347
00:21:40.359 --> 00:21:43.160
As the decades had passed, the hope for answers is dwindled.

348
00:21:43.160 --> 00:21:45.920
For her family, Don died in two thousand and one

349
00:21:46.039 --> 00:21:49.200
and Barbara in twenty seventeen, with neither of them ever

350
00:21:49.240 --> 00:21:52.720
getting closure in knowing what happened to their daughter, though

351
00:21:52.799 --> 00:21:54.839
at the very least they were able to lay her

352
00:21:54.920 --> 00:21:58.319
to rest. Current's sisters have all gone on to get

353
00:21:58.319 --> 00:22:02.079
married and have children, moving to Missouri and Nebraska, with

354
00:22:02.240 --> 00:22:05.039
Letitia having two girls of her own, the youngest the

355
00:22:05.079 --> 00:22:09.319
spitting image of her baby sister quote, she looks exactly

356
00:22:09.440 --> 00:22:11.720
like my sister. We've done a side by side with

357
00:22:11.759 --> 00:22:15.480
their pictures, and it's absolutely incredible. I see my sister

358
00:22:15.519 --> 00:22:18.720
in her every day. Though her case is cold and

359
00:22:18.720 --> 00:22:21.799
there is little evidence, Kurin's remaining family tries to hold

360
00:22:21.839 --> 00:22:23.799
on to hope that one day her killer will be

361
00:22:23.880 --> 00:22:28.319
found and justice will finally be served. Letitia said, quote

362
00:22:29.039 --> 00:22:30.960
at the thirty year mark of her death, I sort

363
00:22:30.960 --> 00:22:34.680
of quit having expectations, but I can't give up. She

364
00:22:34.880 --> 00:22:37.319
was my little sister, and I'm not going to give up.

365
00:22:38.599 --> 00:22:41.440
And I truly hope that one day all these years

366
00:22:41.480 --> 00:22:45.039
of waiting will finally result in investigators finding out what happened.

367
00:22:46.319 --> 00:22:49.240
Anyone with information about the murder of Carin Perry is

368
00:22:49.279 --> 00:22:52.519
asked to contact the Iowa's Division of Criminal Investigation at

369
00:22:52.559 --> 00:22:56.119
five one five seven two five six zero one zero,

370
00:22:57.160 --> 00:23:01.759
or you can email DCI info at DPS dot State

371
00:23:01.960 --> 00:23:05.720
dot Ia dot US, or you can contact the Creston

372
00:23:05.759 --> 00:23:09.079
Police Department at six four one seven eight two eight

373
00:23:09.119 --> 00:23:13.880
four zero two. Unfortunately, Kurin's cases is one of those

374
00:23:13.920 --> 00:23:17.680
with so little evidence from the absolute get go. There

375
00:23:17.759 --> 00:23:20.200
was no sign of a struggle at or around her car,

376
00:23:21.319 --> 00:23:23.920
There was no evidence found on her purse that helped

377
00:23:23.960 --> 00:23:27.559
investigators in any way. Her remains and her clothing that

378
00:23:27.599 --> 00:23:31.000
were found were too degraded to do anything with, and

379
00:23:31.039 --> 00:23:34.599
a cause of death was never found. And that man

380
00:23:34.640 --> 00:23:36.720
that may or may not have anything to do with

381
00:23:36.839 --> 00:23:41.640
her disappearance and subsequent murder was never identified. No one

382
00:23:41.680 --> 00:23:44.039
has any idea who he is. No one came forward

383
00:23:44.039 --> 00:23:46.160
to the police saying I know this guy, and I

384
00:23:46.240 --> 00:23:48.640
just don't understand that. I don't understand how no one

385
00:23:48.680 --> 00:23:52.000
knew who this guy was. Just it's possible maybe no

386
00:23:52.000 --> 00:23:55.480
one at the laundromat knew who he was, but maybe

387
00:23:55.480 --> 00:23:58.440
there just wasn't enough of a description to make a

388
00:23:58.440 --> 00:24:01.039
composite sketch for people to be on the lookout for him.

389
00:24:02.039 --> 00:24:06.000
And unfortunately, in Karrn's case, there is so little information

390
00:24:06.119 --> 00:24:09.160
about her. The Des Moines Register is really the only

391
00:24:09.200 --> 00:24:13.240
publication that ever covered it, and if another newspaper did

392
00:24:13.400 --> 00:24:18.240
mention her, it was articles written by people who worked

393
00:24:18.279 --> 00:24:21.920
for the Des Moines Register. In fact, the only information

394
00:24:22.000 --> 00:24:24.720
you can find about current after nineteen eighty four is

395
00:24:24.839 --> 00:24:28.920
in the two or three articles I found that NBC

396
00:24:29.119 --> 00:24:33.799
and People Magazine had done to commemorate the anniversary of

397
00:24:33.839 --> 00:24:36.920
her death, And honestly, both of those articles were pretty

398
00:24:37.000 --> 00:24:40.319
much carbon copies of each other. This is the kind

399
00:24:40.359 --> 00:24:43.359
of case where, realistically, the only way it'll be solved

400
00:24:43.400 --> 00:24:46.200
is if someone comes forward, and I really and truly

401
00:24:46.279 --> 00:24:50.000
hope that they do. As always, I thank you so

402
00:24:50.160 --> 00:24:54.079
much for listening. And to those who got absolutely dumped

403
00:24:54.119 --> 00:24:58.839
on by the snowstorm we got, I hope that you

404
00:24:58.920 --> 00:25:01.480
stayed warm and see and you did not lose power.

405
00:25:02.240 --> 00:25:06.319
But I hope you have a wonderful week and I

406
00:25:06.440 --> 00:25:09.359
will see you in the next chapter of the Book

407
00:25:09.400 --> 00:25:15.440
of the Dead. Bye, guys, Another page closed. But the

408
00:25:15.519 --> 00:25:19.839
story isn't over for the families left behind. The pain

409
00:25:20.000 --> 00:25:23.640
doesn't end when the headline's fade. And for the victims,

410
00:25:23.880 --> 00:25:28.160
we owe them more than silence. For our on solved cases.

411
00:25:28.799 --> 00:25:31.640
If you have any information, please reach out to local

412
00:25:31.680 --> 00:25:34.880
authorities or visit our show notes for links and resources.

413
00:25:36.079 --> 00:25:41.359
Someone out there knows something, maybe it's you. Thank you

414
00:25:41.480 --> 00:25:44.119
for listening to the Book of the Dead. If this

415
00:25:44.200 --> 00:25:47.079
story moved or spoke to you in some way, talk

416
00:25:47.119 --> 00:25:52.640
about it, share it, keep their names alive. Until next time,

417
00:25:52.839 --> 00:25:59.000
I'm Courtney Liso. Stay safe, stay curious, and stay vigilant.

418
00:25:59.759 --> 00:26:03.480
And remember the dead may be gone, but their stories

419
00:26:03.559 --> 00:26:04.920
will not be forgotten.
