On a blisteringly hot day in Phoenix, Arizona, 13-year-old Myron Traylor set out with his mother to do laundry. He stopped for a drink as his mother continued on, promising to catch up with her, but he never did. What would follow would be a decades-long mystery, plagued by rumors, as investigators searched for the missing boy. With no evidence, only theories to base a motive on, and a witness who may know more than what they're saying, this is the story of a boy who was here one moment and gone the next.

Every story has a beginning, but not everyone has an ending.

2
00:00:07.360 --> 00:00:10.359
In the shadows of headlines and buried police reports lay

3
00:00:10.400 --> 00:00:13.960
the voices of the missing, the murdered, and the forgotten,

4
00:00:14.720 --> 00:00:18.640
waiting to be heard and have their stories told. This

5
00:00:19.079 --> 00:00:22.079
is The Book of the Dead, a true crime podcast

6
00:00:22.160 --> 00:00:27.559
where we remember forgotten victims of heinous crimes, reopen cold cases,

7
00:00:28.079 --> 00:00:32.560
re visit haunting disappearances, and uncover the truths buried beneath

8
00:00:32.560 --> 00:00:37.600
the years of silence. I'm your host, Courtney Liso, and

9
00:00:37.719 --> 00:00:43.640
every week we turn to another chapter, one victim, one mystery,

10
00:00:44.520 --> 00:00:48.560
one step closer to justice. Brought to you by Darkast

11

Network in Deep Podcasts with the Twist. Hello, Hello, Welcome

12
00:01:13.359 --> 00:01:15.400
to the next chapter in the Book of the Dead.

13
00:01:16.599 --> 00:01:20.719
When a thirteen year old boy disappears on a sweltering

14
00:01:20.840 --> 00:01:25.319
evening in Arizona in July of nineteen eighty eight, theories

15
00:01:25.359 --> 00:01:28.799
circulate through the community as to what happened to him.

16
00:01:30.079 --> 00:01:33.000
Was it drug or gang related? Was he abducted by

17
00:01:33.040 --> 00:01:38.280
a predator, or did he simply run away. His family

18
00:01:38.439 --> 00:01:42.840
is terrified for his safety, and the authorities spend countless

19
00:01:42.879 --> 00:01:47.519
hours searching for him and sifting through tips trying to

20
00:01:47.599 --> 00:01:51.680
determine what is credible and what isn't. As the years

21
00:01:51.719 --> 00:01:55.319
have passed, though, the one person that might know what

22
00:01:55.480 --> 00:01:59.560
happened to this boy was not only a witness, but

23
00:02:00.239 --> 00:02:04.519
have been the one responsible, and they have refused to

24
00:02:04.640 --> 00:02:08.759
say a word on the subject for nearly forty years.

25
00:02:09.759 --> 00:02:15.280
This is the disappearance of Myron Trailer. Myron Taimel Trailer

26
00:02:15.400 --> 00:02:19.680
was born on October first, nineteen seventy four, in Phoenix, Arizona,

27
00:02:19.840 --> 00:02:23.919
to Debbie Trailer and Leroy Williams. He had a younger

28
00:02:23.960 --> 00:02:28.080
half brother named Charles, and growing up, Myron was by

29
00:02:28.280 --> 00:02:32.560
all accounts, a sweet and loving boy. According to an

30
00:02:32.599 --> 00:02:35.599
article for the Phoenix New Times, Myron was a quiet

31
00:02:35.719 --> 00:02:39.639
child who loved to read and draw, proudly bringing home

32
00:02:39.719 --> 00:02:42.639
artwork that he made in school home to his grandmother,

33
00:02:43.759 --> 00:02:47.039
and he was never one to get into trouble. He

34
00:02:47.280 --> 00:02:50.360
always informed someone if he was going to play with friends,

35
00:02:50.479 --> 00:02:54.520
and he was very close with his family, spending many

36
00:02:54.639 --> 00:02:58.240
days at his Grandma Ruthie's home with his twenty plus cousins.

37
00:02:59.159 --> 00:03:02.280
As Myron grew into a young teenager, he never lost

38
00:03:02.360 --> 00:03:06.360
his sweet personality. He was still quiet, never so much

39
00:03:06.360 --> 00:03:09.800
as uttering a curse word and was very active in

40
00:03:09.800 --> 00:03:14.680
his church, Southminster Presbyterian. By the summer of nineteen eighty eight,

41
00:03:14.719 --> 00:03:18.360
when this case begins, thirteen year old Myron had many

42
00:03:18.479 --> 00:03:21.879
things to look forward to, having shot up to five

43
00:03:21.960 --> 00:03:25.080
foot five and with the love of football, Ruthie signed

44
00:03:25.120 --> 00:03:28.000
him up to play on an organized team, with practice

45
00:03:28.039 --> 00:03:32.800
to start that August. To prepare, Myron started lifting weights

46
00:03:32.840 --> 00:03:36.719
at his closest friend, Nikosy Burton's home, who lived across

47
00:03:36.759 --> 00:03:41.039
the street from his grandparents. He had also been going

48
00:03:41.039 --> 00:03:45.000
to vacation Bible school classes with Nikosi, and on days

49
00:03:45.000 --> 00:03:48.199
they went to service, the two boys would often stay

50
00:03:48.240 --> 00:03:52.360
after eating dinner with their pastor, Reverend George Brooks, who

51
00:03:52.360 --> 00:03:57.080
would often speak positively of Myron's future. Reverend Brooks told

52
00:03:57.120 --> 00:04:00.080
the Phoenix New Times quote he was a kid that

53
00:04:00.159 --> 00:04:02.879
was going to make it, and if he didn't, it

54
00:04:03.000 --> 00:04:07.599
was because somebody interfered with him. That summer, Myron had

55
00:04:07.639 --> 00:04:10.439
also started a paper route with the goal of raising

56
00:04:10.479 --> 00:04:12.840
money to go on a trip to Disneyland with his

57
00:04:12.919 --> 00:04:16.879
church's youth group. He was also looking forward to spending

58
00:04:16.959 --> 00:04:19.639
a lot of time with his mom and cousins as

59
00:04:19.759 --> 00:04:23.160
during the school year. According to uncovered. He and his

60
00:04:23.240 --> 00:04:26.800
brother stayed with his aunt Sondra in Scottsdale, attending Sierra

61
00:04:26.920 --> 00:04:30.199
Vista Elementary School, where he would soon start seventh grade,

62
00:04:30.879 --> 00:04:33.800
as the school systems there provided him a better education,

63
00:04:34.240 --> 00:04:36.680
and he would go back home to Debbi when school finished.

64
00:04:37.399 --> 00:04:40.199
According to an interview Sondra gave to the Arizona Republic

65
00:04:40.240 --> 00:04:43.560
in twenty sixteen, her nephew staying with her for part

66
00:04:43.560 --> 00:04:46.160
of the year was more due to her sister's struggles

67
00:04:46.199 --> 00:04:50.040
than anything else. Myron rarely saw his father, as he

68
00:04:50.120 --> 00:04:53.199
was regularly in and out of prison. By this point,

69
00:04:53.279 --> 00:04:58.279
Leroy had been incarcerated again and Debbie struggled with substance use.

70
00:04:58.839 --> 00:05:01.519
Sondra kept her nephew's for the school year, offering them

71
00:05:01.560 --> 00:05:05.680
stability when their home life with Debbie became chaotic. The

72
00:05:05.759 --> 00:05:08.519
day of July twenty seventh, nineteen eighty eight, was a

73
00:05:08.720 --> 00:05:12.480
hot one in Phoenix. As the sun climbed higher, the

74
00:05:12.519 --> 00:05:15.680
temperature rose to one hundred and two degrees, and Myron

75
00:05:15.759 --> 00:05:18.160
had spent much of the morning out in that heat

76
00:05:18.399 --> 00:05:23.519
delivering newspapers. Sometime around two forty five, Myron finished his

77
00:05:23.639 --> 00:05:28.160
route and headed home after close to around six pm,

78
00:05:28.319 --> 00:05:31.120
Myron grabbed a small bag of dirty laundry and headed

79
00:05:31.160 --> 00:05:33.439
out with his mother to go to Ruthie's to wash

80
00:05:33.480 --> 00:05:37.680
his clothes, as Debbie's washer had recently broken. He was

81
00:05:37.720 --> 00:05:40.439
also excited to call his brother, who was spending the

82
00:05:40.480 --> 00:05:43.639
summer with an uncle in California, and he was looking

83
00:05:43.680 --> 00:05:46.759
forward to catching up with Charles and trading summer stories.

84
00:05:48.079 --> 00:05:50.560
As the two walked the half mile to Ruthie's house

85
00:05:50.600 --> 00:05:54.160
in South Phoenix, Myron grew thirsty and he asked Debbie

86
00:05:54.160 --> 00:05:57.720
if he could stop to get something to drink. According

87
00:05:57.720 --> 00:06:00.360
to the Arizona Republic, Debbie told her son to go

88
00:06:00.399 --> 00:06:03.000
ahead and to catch up with her when he was done,

89
00:06:03.319 --> 00:06:06.160
and she headed across the vacant field just east of

90
00:06:06.199 --> 00:06:09.639
her parents' home while Myron walked towards an ok fish

91
00:06:09.680 --> 00:06:12.920
and chip shop on sixteen Street, north of Southern Avenue.

92
00:06:13.800 --> 00:06:16.040
Myron walked into the shop and asked the woman at

93
00:06:16.040 --> 00:06:19.279
the counter, Lena Watt, for a wild cherry soda, which

94
00:06:19.319 --> 00:06:23.040
he quickly gool down. Lena told the Phoenix New Times

95
00:06:23.040 --> 00:06:26.120
that she remembered commenting that he must be very thirsty

96
00:06:26.399 --> 00:06:29.199
as he asked for a refill to take with him.

97
00:06:29.759 --> 00:06:32.600
Ryron thanked Lena and he waved, swinging his bag at

98
00:06:32.600 --> 00:06:35.000
his side as he left the shop, and Lena returned

99
00:06:35.040 --> 00:06:38.920
to work as he disappeared from view pretty quickly. After

100
00:06:39.040 --> 00:06:42.680
arriving at her parents' house on Pecan Road, Debbie was

101
00:06:42.800 --> 00:06:48.480
worried Myron had yet to arrive, and that wasn't like him. Plus,

102
00:06:48.519 --> 00:06:51.120
the likelihood of him taking a wrong turn and getting

103
00:06:51.160 --> 00:06:54.839
lost was slim to none. Myron and Debbie walked the

104
00:06:54.879 --> 00:06:58.319
same route nearly every night, and the two of them

105
00:06:58.360 --> 00:07:02.079
could likely take the walk with their eyes closed. Ruthie

106
00:07:02.120 --> 00:07:04.319
and her husband Claude had lived in the same house

107
00:07:04.399 --> 00:07:07.519
for decades and it was the meeting point for every

108
00:07:07.680 --> 00:07:11.839
member of the very large Trailer family, the go to

109
00:07:11.959 --> 00:07:16.160
place for family gatherings and playdates. Myron would have had

110
00:07:16.279 --> 00:07:19.879
no trouble at all getting there. Debbie tried to be

111
00:07:20.000 --> 00:07:23.879
rational about her concern. While it wasn't like her son

112
00:07:23.920 --> 00:07:26.079
not to inform her of where he was going, the

113
00:07:26.160 --> 00:07:29.360
vacation Bible school was to start soon, and it was

114
00:07:29.519 --> 00:07:31.800
possible that he had gone across the street to get

115
00:07:31.839 --> 00:07:34.000
into Kosi so both of them could get on the

116
00:07:34.040 --> 00:07:38.000
bus to attend. Maybe he had decided to head there first,

117
00:07:38.160 --> 00:07:40.279
then he would be back with her when Bible school

118
00:07:40.279 --> 00:07:44.959
had finished. However, according to Uncovered As, Debbie watched for

119
00:07:45.000 --> 00:07:48.399
her son to walk across the nearby field. When Myron

120
00:07:48.439 --> 00:07:51.600
failed to return later that evening, at around nine point thirty,

121
00:07:52.360 --> 00:07:54.920
Debbie called the police to try and report him missing,

122
00:07:55.399 --> 00:07:59.519
but the police weren't too worried. It hadn't been that

123
00:07:59.560 --> 00:08:02.040
long since Debbie had last seen her son, and they

124
00:08:02.079 --> 00:08:04.759
told her that Myron was probably with some friends and

125
00:08:04.839 --> 00:08:08.439
would be back soon. Debbie tried to tell the police

126
00:08:08.439 --> 00:08:11.319
that Myron didn't just go off with friends. He was

127
00:08:11.360 --> 00:08:14.360
a responsible boy and always made sure to tell someone

128
00:08:14.439 --> 00:08:19.040
where he was going, but they weren't convinced. After hanging

129
00:08:19.160 --> 00:08:21.839
up with them, Debbie sets out to retrace her steps

130
00:08:21.920 --> 00:08:24.560
back to the ok Fish and chip shop, looking for

131
00:08:24.639 --> 00:08:28.480
any sign of her son, but nothing was found. With

132
00:08:28.720 --> 00:08:32.200
no sign of Myron anywhere, the trailer family set out

133
00:08:32.200 --> 00:08:35.919
to look for him, and Debbie's boyfriend, Gettis Mince, arrived

134
00:08:35.960 --> 00:08:39.120
just in time. His arm was in a sling, and

135
00:08:39.240 --> 00:08:41.519
when asked what happened, he claimed that he had been

136
00:08:41.559 --> 00:08:44.679
bitten by a dog. While we'll come back to who

137
00:08:44.720 --> 00:08:47.720
Gettis is soon, he joined the search for Myron, and

138
00:08:47.960 --> 00:08:51.120
at two am, after continuous calls to the police to

139
00:08:51.200 --> 00:08:54.120
let them know that he still hadn't turned up, the

140
00:08:54.159 --> 00:08:57.799
police finally responded to the call after family members provided

141
00:08:57.840 --> 00:09:02.240
more information about his character and how Myron not returning

142
00:09:02.240 --> 00:09:07.039
home was absolutely not something he would do. Myron had

143
00:09:07.120 --> 00:09:10.200
zero association with anyone known to be in a bad crowd,

144
00:09:10.320 --> 00:09:13.440
and he didn't use drugs. He was a little leaguer,

145
00:09:13.679 --> 00:09:17.159
incredibly polite, and he did very well in school, which

146
00:09:17.240 --> 00:09:19.879
all pointed to a young boy who wouldn't just run off.

147
00:09:20.960 --> 00:09:23.799
The next day, after being alerted that Myron was still

148
00:09:23.840 --> 00:09:27.120
missing after failing to turn up at Bible School, Reverend

149
00:09:27.159 --> 00:09:30.039
Brooks gathered a group of parishioners to canvass the area

150
00:09:30.080 --> 00:09:33.320
where Myron was last seen to look for him. They

151
00:09:33.360 --> 00:09:36.320
also printed flyers to hand out asking anyone in the

152
00:09:36.399 --> 00:09:39.960
area if they had seen him. As part of their investigation,

153
00:09:40.240 --> 00:09:44.320
detectives interviewed family members and Debbie was even given a polygraph,

154
00:09:44.440 --> 00:09:49.120
which she passed with no issue. As abduction cases involving

155
00:09:49.200 --> 00:09:52.840
children are more likely to be perpetrated by non custolidial parents,

156
00:09:53.399 --> 00:09:56.840
police also looked into Myron's father, but as he was

157
00:09:56.879 --> 00:10:00.200
currently serving a prison sentence, he was of course to

158
00:10:00.240 --> 00:10:04.480
Benny involvement. Leroy, upon his release from prison, did what

159
00:10:04.559 --> 00:10:07.000
he could to help search for his son, though by

160
00:10:07.039 --> 00:10:10.559
that point the trail had long gone cold. Though some

161
00:10:10.600 --> 00:10:12.879
of Myron's friends would later tell police that he had

162
00:10:12.919 --> 00:10:16.000
spoken about running away in the past, and another friend

163
00:10:16.000 --> 00:10:18.639
claimed to have seen him two days after he disappeared,

164
00:10:19.399 --> 00:10:22.360
police quickly pivoted away from the idea that Myron had

165
00:10:22.360 --> 00:10:26.080
made the decision to leave on his own. Investigators also

166
00:10:26.200 --> 00:10:28.840
went to Okay Fish and Chips and spoke to Lena,

167
00:10:28.960 --> 00:10:32.080
who told police that when Myron had stopped by, she

168
00:10:32.200 --> 00:10:34.639
was the only one in the shop. She told him

169
00:10:34.639 --> 00:10:38.120
about his purchase and how he was exceptionally polite, and

170
00:10:38.200 --> 00:10:40.840
that he had left without incident after buying his soda.

171
00:10:42.159 --> 00:10:45.320
Two other witnesses came forward, saying that they saw Myron

172
00:10:45.360 --> 00:10:49.440
walking down the street but hadn't noticed anything suspicious, and

173
00:10:49.759 --> 00:10:56.399
coincidentally enough, Debbie's boyfriend Gettis, was also a witness. Reportedly,

174
00:10:56.519 --> 00:10:59.480
Gettis had been across the street in another building at

175
00:10:59.480 --> 00:11:01.879
the same time time Myron had stopped for a drink,

176
00:11:02.440 --> 00:11:05.320
and he told police that he saw Myron leave holding

177
00:11:05.320 --> 00:11:09.679
a plastic bag in his hand. Gettis, though, upon further

178
00:11:09.759 --> 00:11:14.320
digging by investigators, was not the most upstanding member of society,

179
00:11:14.960 --> 00:11:19.600
and he was quickly shrouded in suspicion. While it's unknown

180
00:11:19.639 --> 00:11:22.200
how long Gettis and Debbie had been dating, he had

181
00:11:22.240 --> 00:11:25.039
a very long rap sheet and had been in and

182
00:11:25.080 --> 00:11:29.600
out of prison for various charges, including aggravated assault for

183
00:11:29.639 --> 00:11:33.039
which he was incarcerated in nineteen eighty one, and he

184
00:11:33.120 --> 00:11:36.600
had been released just a month before Myron had disappeared.

185
00:11:38.120 --> 00:11:42.759
Gettis was also a known drug dealer, specifically cocaine, which

186
00:11:42.960 --> 00:11:46.399
was the drug that Debbie was known to use. The

187
00:11:46.519 --> 00:11:50.720
month after Myron disappeared, Gettis was arrested again for attempted

188
00:11:50.840 --> 00:11:53.919
armed robbery, and he spent close to another ten years

189
00:11:53.919 --> 00:11:59.399
in prison. As the weeks passed, investigators were very active

190
00:11:59.480 --> 00:12:03.039
in their for Myron as well as his family, and

191
00:12:03.159 --> 00:12:06.799
Reverend Brooks, who had spearheaded various searches looking for him

192
00:12:06.879 --> 00:12:10.440
as well as the trailers, were vocal in their appreciation

193
00:12:10.720 --> 00:12:15.159
for the dedication to finding Myron. However, the police were

194
00:12:15.200 --> 00:12:19.840
frustrated with not being able to make much progress. Lieutenant

195
00:12:19.879 --> 00:12:22.159
Wayne Polk, who was in charge of the Missing Person's

196
00:12:22.240 --> 00:12:26.559
Unit told the Arizona Republic quote, the frustrating part in

197
00:12:26.639 --> 00:12:30.080
dealing with Myron is we've really come up short. We

198
00:12:30.200 --> 00:12:32.840
should be further along, but we just don't have a

199
00:12:32.919 --> 00:12:37.960
strong indication of what happened to him. Quickly, Myron's photo

200
00:12:38.000 --> 00:12:42.000
appeared on flyers, in newspapers and on milk cartons which

201
00:12:42.000 --> 00:12:45.559
were distributed nationally, and the National Center for Missing and

202
00:12:45.679 --> 00:12:49.600
Exploited Children estimated that over forty million homes had received

203
00:12:49.600 --> 00:12:54.879
a newsletter asking for tips and information. Classified as one

204
00:12:54.919 --> 00:12:58.480
of three high priority cases, a five thousand dollars reward

205
00:12:58.559 --> 00:13:01.799
was offered for information that could lead to Myron's whereabouts.

206
00:13:03.080 --> 00:13:06.279
A reenactment was even done the year following his disappearance

207
00:13:06.399 --> 00:13:09.440
to keep his case in the public eye. And while

208
00:13:09.519 --> 00:13:13.279
tips flooded in, especially in the initial stages of the investigation,

209
00:13:14.159 --> 00:13:17.120
many of them were outlandish and send police on wild

210
00:13:17.200 --> 00:13:21.360
goose chases as they spent valuable time trying to corroborate them.

211
00:13:23.039 --> 00:13:26.120
Some of these tips, which fueled the rumors that Myron

212
00:13:26.240 --> 00:13:29.320
was alive, came in the form of phone calls that

213
00:13:29.360 --> 00:13:33.200
the police as well as the Trailer family had received

214
00:13:33.279 --> 00:13:37.240
over the first three years of the investigation. The first

215
00:13:37.320 --> 00:13:39.600
call came to the house on pe Con Road, and

216
00:13:39.720 --> 00:13:43.320
Ruthie answered the phone, believing the caller to be her granddaughter,

217
00:13:43.360 --> 00:13:47.399
who was living in Texas. When Ruthy started asking questions

218
00:13:47.399 --> 00:13:50.360
about the caller's mother, the person on the line hung up,

219
00:13:50.840 --> 00:13:53.879
and she believed it was possible that the caller was Myron.

220
00:13:55.519 --> 00:13:58.600
The next call came some time after and was answered

221
00:13:58.639 --> 00:14:02.639
by Myron's grandfather Cloak. This time the person on the

222
00:14:02.679 --> 00:14:05.639
other end asked for Myron, and when Claude told him

223
00:14:05.679 --> 00:14:10.480
that he was missing, this caller hung up as well. Finally,

224
00:14:10.639 --> 00:14:14.279
Nikosi Burton received a phone call from a male asking

225
00:14:14.320 --> 00:14:18.200
about Ruthie and how she was doing. When Nicosi said

226
00:14:18.240 --> 00:14:20.840
she had been ill and was in the hospital, this

227
00:14:20.960 --> 00:14:24.960
caller hung up too. None of the callers were able

228
00:14:25.000 --> 00:14:28.240
to be traced, and to this day, no one knows

229
00:14:28.279 --> 00:14:32.360
who made them. Besides these calls, though, police were contending

230
00:14:32.360 --> 00:14:36.039
with strange ones of their own, particularly a persistent caller

231
00:14:36.120 --> 00:14:40.159
who insisted they knew what happened to Myron. According to

232
00:14:40.240 --> 00:14:44.360
Detective Ron Jones, in nineteen ninety, a tipster made frequent

233
00:14:44.440 --> 00:14:47.559
calls to the police saying that a quote well known

234
00:14:47.639 --> 00:14:51.360
crack dealer in South Phoenix had drunkenly bragged about molesting

235
00:14:51.399 --> 00:14:54.360
and murdering a child on the day that Myron had disappeared.

236
00:14:55.519 --> 00:14:59.120
This person claimed, according to the Arizona Republic, that the

237
00:14:59.159 --> 00:15:01.759
dealer had gotten to a fight with his wife, went

238
00:15:01.799 --> 00:15:03.799
to a bar next to the Fish and Chip's shop

239
00:15:03.919 --> 00:15:08.440
to drink, and had spotted Myron walking by. The caller

240
00:15:08.480 --> 00:15:11.919
alleged that the dealer, after molesting him, had beaten Myron

241
00:15:12.000 --> 00:15:14.480
with the rock, burying him in the backyard of a

242
00:15:14.559 --> 00:15:18.360
known drug den near Ruthy's home. Of course, this call

243
00:15:18.480 --> 00:15:23.159
was incredibly alarming, not to mention extremely detailed, and the

244
00:15:23.159 --> 00:15:25.440
police worked to track down the caller to bring them

245
00:15:25.440 --> 00:15:29.200
in for questioning. When this person placed a second call

246
00:15:29.240 --> 00:15:31.480
to police, they were able to track him to a

247
00:15:31.519 --> 00:15:35.440
specific telephone booth and bring him in for questioning. While

248
00:15:35.480 --> 00:15:39.240
this caller insisted he had no additional information, the police

249
00:15:39.279 --> 00:15:43.639
worked to verify the claims after a thorough investigation, though

250
00:15:43.879 --> 00:15:47.159
they deemed the tip as bogus, and Sergeant John McCarney,

251
00:15:47.600 --> 00:15:50.480
after the caller continuously claimed that what he was alleging

252
00:15:50.559 --> 00:15:54.080
was true, came forward and said quote there was no

253
00:15:54.240 --> 00:15:57.879
chance he was right. According to Sergeant McCarney, the tipster

254
00:15:57.960 --> 00:16:00.679
had made up the story to get revenge on his wife,

255
00:16:00.720 --> 00:16:03.120
who had left him to be with the same drug

256
00:16:03.159 --> 00:16:07.080
dealer he had accused of murder. This wasn't the only

257
00:16:07.200 --> 00:16:10.200
time Myron's case was rumored to be drug or gang related,

258
00:16:10.240 --> 00:16:14.399
though rumors persisted over the years, with claims that Myron

259
00:16:14.440 --> 00:16:16.919
had been caught in the crosshairs of two rival gangs.

260
00:16:17.600 --> 00:16:19.639
Some alleged that Myron had run away to become a

261
00:16:19.679 --> 00:16:23.960
drug dealer himself, and others alleged that Debbie had sold

262
00:16:24.039 --> 00:16:27.000
him because she owed money to gettis for the drugs

263
00:16:27.039 --> 00:16:31.440
he had supplied her with. Nakosi himself gave an interview

264
00:16:31.440 --> 00:16:34.519
in nineteen ninety saying that he believed that his friend's

265
00:16:34.559 --> 00:16:38.240
mom was responsible and that she owed money to somebody

266
00:16:38.480 --> 00:16:41.519
he just did a note to whom. The police did

267
00:16:41.600 --> 00:16:44.720
look into this, but detected. Jones stated that nothing was

268
00:16:44.759 --> 00:16:49.480
found to support the allegations against Debbie Trailer. However, there

269
00:16:49.519 --> 00:16:52.320
were those in her family that believed it was possible

270
00:16:52.399 --> 00:16:55.399
she knew more and that she had possibly been able

271
00:16:55.480 --> 00:16:58.279
to scothe the results of the polygraph she had taken

272
00:16:59.480 --> 00:17:02.919
Sondras in twenty sixteen. Quote. We all thought she might

273
00:17:02.919 --> 00:17:05.240
have been on something, but we were just worried about

274
00:17:05.240 --> 00:17:09.880
finding him. My sister, she was on drugs. She knew something.

275
00:17:10.839 --> 00:17:13.640
As the years passed by, the Trailer family continued to

276
00:17:13.640 --> 00:17:16.200
hold on to hope that Myron would be found, though

277
00:17:16.319 --> 00:17:19.440
police were worried that he likely would not be found alive.

278
00:17:20.799 --> 00:17:23.559
When Claude and Ruthie passed away, Sondra moved into the

279
00:17:23.559 --> 00:17:28.160
Bocan Road home, and soon after letters began to arrive,

280
00:17:28.640 --> 00:17:32.200
following one received by investigators claiming that Myron had been

281
00:17:32.240 --> 00:17:36.079
buried on private property near twenty fourth Street in Jones Avenue,

282
00:17:36.559 --> 00:17:40.039
which proved to be false. According to the Arizona Republic.

283
00:17:40.400 --> 00:17:43.000
One of the letters had been addressed to Ruthie, which

284
00:17:43.039 --> 00:17:47.519
referred to Myron as Byron and said quote, Hello, I

285
00:17:47.559 --> 00:17:49.279
am not going to leave my name due to the

286
00:17:49.319 --> 00:17:51.359
fear of what may happen to my mother, who still

287
00:17:51.400 --> 00:17:54.440
lives in Phoenix. Is what I have to say is

288
00:17:54.480 --> 00:17:58.960
the truth about some very bad Solis bastards. The writer

289
00:17:59.119 --> 00:18:01.839
claimed that Myron had been taken by two men known

290
00:18:01.920 --> 00:18:05.480
to be associated with the Mexican mafia named Kiko and

291
00:18:05.599 --> 00:18:09.759
Uncle Tony, who lived in the neighborhood. These men were

292
00:18:09.759 --> 00:18:14.200
allegedly involved in the murder of a family, including two children.

293
00:18:14.440 --> 00:18:18.119
Another letter, this time addressed to Soandra after she moved in,

294
00:18:18.440 --> 00:18:21.799
claimed that whoever was responsible for killing Myron had taken

295
00:18:21.880 --> 00:18:24.680
him to where chicken fights were known to occur and

296
00:18:24.759 --> 00:18:27.519
his body was fed to hogs, the remains being put

297
00:18:27.559 --> 00:18:32.240
in the trash. They claimed Thatikiko was a police informant

298
00:18:32.319 --> 00:18:36.680
and criticized the police for allegedly protecting him. Quote, don't

299
00:18:36.720 --> 00:18:39.920
you care what happened to Myron? But police don't care

300
00:18:39.920 --> 00:18:43.519
about a black kid. That Mexican is more important to them.

301
00:18:44.480 --> 00:18:48.480
This letter was signed a friend. The letters disturbed the

302
00:18:48.559 --> 00:18:51.039
family as a change in who the letter was addressed

303
00:18:51.079 --> 00:18:54.759
to suggested that the house was being watched. The police

304
00:18:54.759 --> 00:18:57.519
were also disturbed by the allegations in the letters, but

305
00:18:57.839 --> 00:19:01.920
these claims were also unable to be some stantiated. By

306
00:19:01.960 --> 00:19:07.119
two thousand and two, fourteen years after Myron vanished, Debbie,

307
00:19:07.160 --> 00:19:10.359
who had slowly faded into the background during the investigation

308
00:19:10.880 --> 00:19:13.920
and whose family frequently didn't even know where she was

309
00:19:14.000 --> 00:19:17.279
after losing her home and quitting her job, died in

310
00:19:17.279 --> 00:19:20.960
two thousand and two after a battle with cancer, never

311
00:19:21.079 --> 00:19:24.880
knowing the fate of her son. At this point, investigators

312
00:19:24.920 --> 00:19:28.240
were still actively following up on tips, but had resigned

313
00:19:28.240 --> 00:19:30.319
themselves to the fact that they were looking for a

314
00:19:30.319 --> 00:19:35.240
body detected. Bob Brnansky, who was still looking into Myron's disappearance,

315
00:19:35.440 --> 00:19:40.000
told the Arizona Republic, quote, I believe he's dead. I

316
00:19:40.039 --> 00:19:42.559
think he's dead, and I think he's buried somewhere not

317
00:19:42.640 --> 00:19:45.720
too far from where he lived. While the hope of

318
00:19:45.759 --> 00:19:48.559
finding Myron alive and well had long since been given

319
00:19:48.640 --> 00:19:52.920
up by investigators, detected, Brnansky was adamant that the family

320
00:19:53.000 --> 00:19:56.880
needed answers. Quote, we're not giving up on this. The

321
00:19:56.960 --> 00:20:02.440
family needs closure and they need to know exactly what happened. Sondra,

322
00:20:02.559 --> 00:20:04.640
for her part, held on to the idea that her

323
00:20:04.640 --> 00:20:08.160
nephew would be found, keeping his faded missing poster taped

324
00:20:08.200 --> 00:20:11.799
to her storm door for passers by de seat. She said, quote,

325
00:20:12.000 --> 00:20:14.559
we still have hope that one day he'll come home.

326
00:20:15.079 --> 00:20:18.400
We're still hoping that he is alive. In two thousand

327
00:20:18.400 --> 00:20:22.960
and nine, Gettis Mince was arrested again, this time for murder,

328
00:20:23.079 --> 00:20:26.079
after killing his girlfriend and stabbing her mother in their

329
00:20:26.079 --> 00:20:30.440
home in Peoria. Arizona. He was convicted of second degree

330
00:20:30.519 --> 00:20:33.799
murder and aggravated assaults, and he was sentenced to forty

331
00:20:33.839 --> 00:20:37.880
two years in prison. Though police tried once again after

332
00:20:37.960 --> 00:20:41.559
his arrest to speak to him about Myron, Gettis refused

333
00:20:41.559 --> 00:20:45.519
to be interviewed and has consistently declined any opportunity to

334
00:20:45.519 --> 00:20:48.000
speak to police about what could have happened on the

335
00:20:48.079 --> 00:20:53.200
day Myron disappeared. Though lacking evidence, Gettis has remained the

336
00:20:53.279 --> 00:20:57.599
only possible suspect in Myron's case, and the theory police

337
00:20:57.599 --> 00:21:00.839
are working with is that Myron and geddis ross paths

338
00:21:01.000 --> 00:21:04.480
outside the fish and chip shop, and Myrene confronted his

339
00:21:04.559 --> 00:21:08.039
mother's boyfriend about his drug use, likely due to debbie

340
00:21:08.079 --> 00:21:12.279
struggle with addiction. It's theorized that Ghettis grew angry and

341
00:21:12.359 --> 00:21:15.440
lord Myron away before killing him, and he was injured

342
00:21:15.480 --> 00:21:18.880
in a struggle, which would have explained the bitemark Getis

343
00:21:18.880 --> 00:21:22.319
claim to have sustained by a dog. That evening in

344
00:21:22.400 --> 00:21:28.119
twenty sixteen, almost thirty years after Myron disappeared, three unknown

345
00:21:28.160 --> 00:21:31.559
men showed up at the home on Pecan Road. They

346
00:21:31.680 --> 00:21:35.160
knocked on the door, and Sondra, who was alone, called

347
00:21:35.200 --> 00:21:38.200
through the door, asking who was there. According to the

348
00:21:38.200 --> 00:21:41.680
Arizona Republic, one of the men said, quote, my last

349
00:21:41.759 --> 00:21:45.079
name is Trailer, and I'm here from Texas. My mama

350
00:21:45.119 --> 00:21:47.200
told me I have a bunch of kinfolk out here.

351
00:21:47.720 --> 00:21:51.480
Are you family. Because Sondra was not wearing her glasses,

352
00:21:51.519 --> 00:21:54.000
she was unable to see who the men were, and

353
00:21:54.119 --> 00:21:56.480
she didn't feel safe enough to open the door for them.

354
00:21:57.160 --> 00:21:59.440
She asked them to come back when someone else was home,

355
00:21:59.559 --> 00:22:02.119
and the men left, driving off in a van that

356
00:22:02.359 --> 00:22:04.920
might have had a sticker spelling out Trailer on it.

357
00:22:06.319 --> 00:22:09.079
Because Sondra was unable to see, she couldn't be sure

358
00:22:09.119 --> 00:22:12.440
if that's what the sticker really said. But the man

359
00:22:12.480 --> 00:22:16.119
never returned. Though there are those that believe one of

360
00:22:16.160 --> 00:22:18.599
the men could have been Myron, as a long running

361
00:22:18.640 --> 00:22:21.119
rumor was that he had run off to California, where

362
00:22:21.160 --> 00:22:26.480
his brother's uncle lived, though that was believed to be untrue. However,

363
00:22:26.559 --> 00:22:29.640
I don't believe that this was Myron. Rather, I think

364
00:22:29.640 --> 00:22:31.960
it's possible that one of these men was the author

365
00:22:32.000 --> 00:22:35.039
of the letters that Sondra had received, as they were

366
00:22:35.079 --> 00:22:40.160
poststamped as being sent from South Texas. But admittedly there

367
00:22:40.240 --> 00:22:44.359
is no proof that the two incidents are related. As

368
00:22:44.400 --> 00:22:48.920
of today, Myron's case is still unsolved, and while tips

369
00:22:48.920 --> 00:22:52.400
trickle in, police have not found anything substantial to point

370
00:22:52.400 --> 00:22:56.240
them in the right direction. While police do believe that

371
00:22:56.279 --> 00:22:59.880
foul play was likely involved, his cases remain categorized as

372
00:23:00.160 --> 00:23:04.000
non family abduction. At the time of his disappearance, Myron

373
00:23:04.079 --> 00:23:06.720
Trailer was thirteen years old and he is described as

374
00:23:06.720 --> 00:23:10.319
a black male with black hair and brown eyes. He

375
00:23:10.440 --> 00:23:12.680
was five foot five at the time and weighed between

376
00:23:12.720 --> 00:23:15.440
one hundred and six and one hundred and sixteen pounds.

377
00:23:16.559 --> 00:23:18.319
He has a half inched scar on the right side

378
00:23:18.319 --> 00:23:20.599
of his face from a bicycle accident, and he was

379
00:23:20.720 --> 00:23:24.079
last seen wearing a red and white striped shirt, white

380
00:23:24.079 --> 00:23:28.119
shorts with blueprint, and white sneakers. He was carrying a

381
00:23:28.160 --> 00:23:30.880
small bag of laundry with him, and while he needed

382
00:23:30.880 --> 00:23:33.519
glasses to read, he was not wearing them that evening.

383
00:23:34.880 --> 00:23:37.759
Anyone with information is urged to call the Phoenix Police

384
00:23:37.759 --> 00:23:41.599
Department at six year o two four nine five five

385
00:23:41.759 --> 00:23:44.880
three nine four, or you can call their Missing an

386
00:23:44.960 --> 00:23:48.759
Unidentified Person's Unit at six zero two five three four

387
00:23:49.200 --> 00:23:52.960
two one two one. As always, those numbers will be

388
00:23:53.000 --> 00:23:56.400
listed down below. This is not the first time that

389
00:23:56.480 --> 00:23:59.440
I have covered a case involving someone who disappeared in

390
00:23:59.519 --> 00:24:03.400
broad days light. In fact, many of the cases involving

391
00:24:03.440 --> 00:24:07.640
missing children that I've done all involved that specific detail.

392
00:24:08.440 --> 00:24:13.960
Nicholas Barclay, Dewan Simms, wesley Dale Morgan, Alexis Patterson, and

393
00:24:14.119 --> 00:24:18.039
Myron Trailer all vanished in places where someone should have

394
00:24:18.160 --> 00:24:22.839
seen something. A busy mall, a busy street, their front yard.

395
00:24:23.759 --> 00:24:27.359
And yet all of these cases are unsolved, And while

396
00:24:27.480 --> 00:24:31.839
some cases may have witnesses, no one had anything helpful

397
00:24:31.880 --> 00:24:35.519
to say, which leads me to believe that someone else

398
00:24:35.640 --> 00:24:39.480
out there has more information that they just aren't willing

399
00:24:39.519 --> 00:24:43.799
to divulge. In Myron's case, I think there's something to

400
00:24:43.839 --> 00:24:47.799
be said about his mother's boyfriend being involved. Gettis has

401
00:24:47.880 --> 00:24:50.960
prute he's a violent man and was arrested for murder,

402
00:24:51.319 --> 00:24:53.799
and it's more than likely that that was not his

403
00:24:53.839 --> 00:24:57.920
first time doing it. But without him talking, and without

404
00:24:57.960 --> 00:25:01.079
the evidence to compel him to, it's not likely he'll

405
00:25:01.119 --> 00:25:05.559
give up what he knows. If Debbie was aware of something,

406
00:25:05.680 --> 00:25:08.640
she's no longer here to talk about it, though Sondra

407
00:25:08.680 --> 00:25:11.359
and Nikosi do believe she also knew more than what

408
00:25:11.440 --> 00:25:15.079
she was willing to share after almost forty years, the

409
00:25:15.160 --> 00:25:18.720
Trailer family deserved to know what happened to Myron, and

410
00:25:18.799 --> 00:25:21.799
Sondra at this point doesn't even want to know the

411
00:25:21.880 --> 00:25:25.440
name of who was potentially involved. She just wants to

412
00:25:25.480 --> 00:25:28.759
bring her nephew home, and I truly hope that one

413
00:25:28.839 --> 00:25:33.519
day she is able to. As always, I thank you

414
00:25:33.720 --> 00:25:36.759
so much for listening, and I hope you have a

415
00:25:37.039 --> 00:25:42.480
wonderful week and I will see you in the next

416
00:25:42.559 --> 00:25:47.920
chapter of the Book of the Dead. Bye, guys, Another

417
00:25:48.000 --> 00:25:53.039
page closed. But the story isn't over for the families

418
00:25:53.119 --> 00:25:56.359
left behind. The pain doesn't end when the headline's fade.

419
00:25:57.000 --> 00:25:59.920
And for the victims, we owe them more than silence.

420
00:26:00.039 --> 00:26:04.519
Yes for our on solved cases. If you have any information,

00:26:13.240 --> 00:26:17.039
Maybe it's you. Thank you for listening to the Book

you in some way, talk about it, share it, Keep

00:26:24.039 --> 00:26:30.599
their names alive. Until next time. I'm Courtney Liso. Stay safe,

be gone, but their stories will not be forgotten,
