In 1975, 26-year-old teacher Jane Ellen Wakefield disappeared from Iowa City just months after filing for divorce from her husband, John. She never returned home, never contacted loved ones, and was never seen again. Even after an infrmant comes forward with an alarming story of what happened, the case went cold faster than anyone could have expected. Nearly fifty years later, the mystery surrounding Jane’s disappearance remains unsolved.

Anyone with information regarding Jane Wakefield's disappearance or possible murder is asked to call the Iowa City Police Department at 319-356-5451, the case number to reference is J16-75.

Network INDEP Podcasts with the Twist. Hello, Hello, Welcome to

12
00:01:12.879 --> 00:01:15.239
the next chapter in the Book of the Dead. In

13
00:01:15.280 --> 00:01:18.239
the summer of nineteen seventy five, a twenty six year

14
00:01:18.239 --> 00:01:22.719
old woman was trying to start over. A teacher described

15
00:01:22.760 --> 00:01:27.239
as intelligent, caring, and deeply devoted to her students, she

16
00:01:27.280 --> 00:01:30.799
had recently filed for divorce from her husband after years

17
00:01:30.879 --> 00:01:34.879
of marital problems. Friends believed she was ready to move

18
00:01:34.920 --> 00:01:38.680
forward with her life, but just six months after filing

19
00:01:38.719 --> 00:01:42.760
for divorce, she vanished from Iowa City, Iowa, without a trace.

20
00:01:43.439 --> 00:01:45.719
At first, there was hope that she had simply left

21
00:01:45.719 --> 00:01:49.200
town for a few days, but as hours turned into

22
00:01:49.280 --> 00:01:53.000
days and days into weeks, that hope began to fade.

23
00:01:53.920 --> 00:01:57.079
She never contacted her family, she never returned to work,

24
00:01:57.719 --> 00:01:59.599
and she never picked up the pieces of the life

25
00:01:59.599 --> 00:02:02.640
she had been fighting to rebuild. What followed was a

26
00:02:02.680 --> 00:02:07.840
case filled with unanswered questions, suspicion, and silence. Those closest

27
00:02:07.840 --> 00:02:11.960
to her were forced to confront a terrifying possibility that

28
00:02:12.080 --> 00:02:15.759
someone knew exactly what happened to her and had managed

29
00:02:15.759 --> 00:02:20.000
to keep that secret hidden for decades. Nearly fifty years later,

30
00:02:20.159 --> 00:02:22.960
the disappearance of a young woman who was just beginning

31
00:02:22.960 --> 00:02:28.960
to start over again remains unsolved. No arrests, no definitive answers,

32
00:02:29.039 --> 00:02:31.840
just a young teacher who vanished and a police force

33
00:02:31.919 --> 00:02:35.680
baffled by the questions left in her wake. This is

34
00:02:35.719 --> 00:02:40.000
the disappearance of Jane Wakefield. Jane Ellen Halberg was born

35
00:02:40.080 --> 00:02:44.000
on November nineteenth, nineteen forty eight, in Luddington, Michigan, to

36
00:02:44.159 --> 00:02:48.199
Richard and Pauline Halberg. She was the second of three daughters.

37
00:02:48.439 --> 00:02:51.319
She had an older sister, Susan Jean, and a younger

38
00:02:51.319 --> 00:02:55.080
sister named Karen. Very little is known about Jane's childhood,

39
00:02:55.199 --> 00:02:58.280
but she would attend Bloomington High School and did incredibly

40
00:02:58.319 --> 00:03:01.360
well in her classes when she balanced her studies with

41
00:03:01.520 --> 00:03:05.560
various extracurricular activities and clubs. She was part of the

42
00:03:05.639 --> 00:03:09.319
National Honor Society, the School Spanish Club, as well as

43
00:03:09.360 --> 00:03:13.400
the swim club. While information about her friendships is also scarce,

44
00:03:13.639 --> 00:03:16.199
she did of a childhood friendnamed Carol, who Jane had

45
00:03:16.240 --> 00:03:19.560
met in seventh grade, and they remained close throughout elementary

46
00:03:19.599 --> 00:03:22.800
and high school. While in their senior year, Jane and

47
00:03:22.840 --> 00:03:26.719
Carroll both had plans to attend Morningside College in Sioux City, Iowa.

48
00:03:27.599 --> 00:03:30.039
Of course, the two had to be roommates they were

49
00:03:30.120 --> 00:03:33.159
such good friends, and they entered their freshman year in

50
00:03:33.280 --> 00:03:37.000
nineteen sixty six. That year, Jane started working at Sue

51
00:03:37.080 --> 00:03:40.680
City's Public Museum while attending her classes, and that spring,

52
00:03:40.919 --> 00:03:44.479
according to Iowa coldcases dot Org, she was introduced by

53
00:03:44.520 --> 00:03:47.280
her co worker to a man named John Wakefield, who

54
00:03:47.319 --> 00:03:50.159
was a graduate student working towards a PhD in business

55
00:03:50.240 --> 00:03:54.680
administration at the University of Iowa. Jane and John hit

56
00:03:54.719 --> 00:03:56.520
it off, and she would go on to move in

57
00:03:56.599 --> 00:03:59.800
with him after her freshman year concluded in nineteen sixty seven.

58
00:04:00.479 --> 00:04:03.319
While her relationship was blossoming, that summer was a hard

59
00:04:03.360 --> 00:04:07.680
one for Jane. On July nineteenth, nineteen sixty seven, Jane

60
00:04:07.759 --> 00:04:10.479
was involved in a four car collision where one person

61
00:04:10.560 --> 00:04:14.080
lost their life. According to an article for the Gazette,

62
00:04:14.199 --> 00:04:16.439
Jane had just pulled out of a service station at

63
00:04:16.439 --> 00:04:20.399
the highway intersection of Rocky Shore Drive, heading east when

64
00:04:20.480 --> 00:04:23.160
fifty one year old alan Neale, who was driving west,

65
00:04:23.319 --> 00:04:27.879
was hit head on. Shortly after, two more cars crashed

66
00:04:27.879 --> 00:04:30.439
into them as well, driven by twenty year old William

67
00:04:30.519 --> 00:04:34.800
Mueller and fifty six year old Florence Cochrane. It's possible

68
00:04:34.879 --> 00:04:37.279
the lack of visibility caused by heavy rain that day

69
00:04:37.319 --> 00:04:41.360
contributed to the accident. Jane and William Mueller were treated

70
00:04:41.360 --> 00:04:44.800
for minor injuries at the University Hospital, but alan Neiale

71
00:04:44.879 --> 00:04:48.879
died shortly after the crash. Florence was not mentioned as

72
00:04:48.920 --> 00:04:52.839
being injured. That September, Jane and John married, according to

73
00:04:52.879 --> 00:04:57.279
the Sioux City Journal, at Trinity Lutheran Church. Also according

74
00:04:57.279 --> 00:04:59.959
to that marriage announcement, it seems like Jane's father might

75
00:05:00.120 --> 00:05:02.720
not have attended the wedding of his middle daughter. He

76
00:05:02.839 --> 00:05:05.040
was not mentioned in the announcement, and it states that

77
00:05:05.120 --> 00:05:07.560
Jane was given away by a man named George Evans.

78
00:05:08.839 --> 00:05:11.040
It's likely that Jane and her father had a falling

79
00:05:11.079 --> 00:05:14.800
out or at minimum a very strained relationship due to

80
00:05:14.839 --> 00:05:18.319
her parents' marital troubles. Richard and Pauline would end up

81
00:05:18.360 --> 00:05:21.160
divorcing in nineteen sixty eight. According to a blog post

82
00:05:21.160 --> 00:05:24.800
in another Bundy blog dot com. Richard would later marry

83
00:05:24.800 --> 00:05:27.120
two more times, and Pauline would go on to marry

84
00:05:27.160 --> 00:05:30.639
again as well. Also in October of nineteen sixty eight,

85
00:05:30.800 --> 00:05:33.839
Allan Neil's wife, Yola, filed for fifty thousand dollars in

86
00:05:33.920 --> 00:05:37.480
damages against Jane and John, as well as Hokee Oldsmobile

87
00:05:37.560 --> 00:05:40.839
Cadillac Company, alleging that her husband died as a result

88
00:05:40.879 --> 00:05:43.800
of the injuries suffered after being struck by Jean's car.

89
00:05:43.920 --> 00:05:47.160
According to an article for The Gazette, the resolution to

90
00:05:47.199 --> 00:05:50.360
that suit is not known. After marrying, Jane would go

91
00:05:50.439 --> 00:05:52.839
on to transfer to the University of Iowa to finish

92
00:05:52.879 --> 00:05:56.720
her studies, graduating with her bachelor's in psychology in nineteen seventy.

93
00:05:57.560 --> 00:06:00.639
After graduation, Jane became a teacher where working in both

94
00:06:00.680 --> 00:06:03.759
the Prairie and Waco school districts, teaching math and reading.

95
00:06:04.600 --> 00:06:07.439
The Waco district, according to a woman who allegedly worked

96
00:06:07.439 --> 00:06:10.560
with Jane at this time named Wendy Laska, who left

97
00:06:10.560 --> 00:06:12.839
to comment on the Iowa Cold Case website, was a

98
00:06:12.839 --> 00:06:17.040
consolidated districts in southern Iowa. Wendy and Jane were the

99
00:06:17.040 --> 00:06:20.120
same age and the only two teachers who apparently smoked

100
00:06:20.120 --> 00:06:22.720
at the school, so they spent a lot of time bonding.

101
00:06:23.399 --> 00:06:25.959
Wendy said that Jane assisted Wendy when she put plays

102
00:06:25.959 --> 00:06:28.839
on at Old Hills High School, and when Wendy experienced

103
00:06:28.879 --> 00:06:32.720
complications while giving birth, Jane sek into the Wayland Hospital

104
00:06:32.759 --> 00:06:35.000
to bring Gibbs and be a source of support for her.

105
00:06:35.759 --> 00:06:38.399
She claimed to have only met John once, but Jane

106
00:06:38.399 --> 00:06:41.079
confided in Wendy that her marriage wasn't going well and

107
00:06:41.120 --> 00:06:45.360
she was very unhappy. According to the Charlie Project, the

108
00:06:45.439 --> 00:06:48.439
source of their problems stemmed from Jane's desire to have children,

109
00:06:48.680 --> 00:06:51.839
but John did not. In March of nineteen seventy five,

110
00:06:52.000 --> 00:06:54.639
Jane filed for divorce and moved out of the apartment

111
00:06:54.720 --> 00:06:57.240
she and John shared at nine to twenty three Iowa

112
00:06:57.279 --> 00:07:01.079
Avenue in Iowa City. She moved into the Bonair Mobile

113
00:07:01.079 --> 00:07:03.279
Home Park in Iowa City and tried to move on

114
00:07:03.360 --> 00:07:05.759
with her life, taking a new teaching job at Penns

115
00:07:05.759 --> 00:07:10.360
School in North Liberty that August. However, the divorce process

116
00:07:10.399 --> 00:07:12.839
was tied up, allegedly due to debates on how she

117
00:07:12.879 --> 00:07:15.319
and John were supposed to divide the two businesses he

118
00:07:15.360 --> 00:07:19.079
owned during their marriage. According to a friend of Jane's,

119
00:07:19.120 --> 00:07:22.120
Hank Reed, he told the Iowa City Press Citizen that

120
00:07:22.199 --> 00:07:26.040
Jane wanted the tavern called Magoos in the divorce. She

121
00:07:26.120 --> 00:07:27.759
had worked there when it went up for sale in

122
00:07:27.839 --> 00:07:30.680
nineteen seventy three and told John about it, leading to

123
00:07:30.759 --> 00:07:33.759
him purchasing it. Jane went on to manage the bar

124
00:07:33.879 --> 00:07:37.120
after the sale, and her mother, Pauline, said quote she

125
00:07:37.199 --> 00:07:39.839
felt that it was her bar. It was very lucrative.

126
00:07:40.759 --> 00:07:43.000
John disagreed that this was the reason for the delay,

127
00:07:43.000 --> 00:07:46.800
though he claimed the holdup came from Jane being dissatisfied

128
00:07:46.839 --> 00:07:50.120
with the five thousand dollars settlement he offered her. She

129
00:07:50.279 --> 00:07:53.800
apparently wanted seven thousand dollars, and he had allegedly told

130
00:07:53.879 --> 00:07:56.360
her if she wanted mcgoos she could have it if

131
00:07:56.360 --> 00:07:59.160
she paid for it. Even though the proceedings were being

132
00:07:59.240 --> 00:08:02.399
held Upane began finding joy in the chaos, and she

133
00:08:02.519 --> 00:08:04.839
started dating an un named man. Around the summer of

134
00:08:04.920 --> 00:08:09.680
nineteen seventy five, things were looking up, and at twenty six,

135
00:08:09.920 --> 00:08:11.680
Jane should have had the rest of her life to

136
00:08:11.720 --> 00:08:15.560
look forward to. But everything changed just as things were

137
00:08:15.600 --> 00:08:19.759
falling into place. On September sixth, nineteen seventy five, Jane

138
00:08:19.759 --> 00:08:21.560
went on a bike ride with a group of friends,

139
00:08:22.120 --> 00:08:24.240
mentioning that she had an appointment to attend that she

140
00:08:24.279 --> 00:08:28.480
needed to get back for later that afternoon, around two thirty,

141
00:08:28.519 --> 00:08:31.519
according to the Gazette, her neighbor spoke to Jane and

142
00:08:31.600 --> 00:08:35.039
said that everything seemed normal with her. The next day,

143
00:08:35.279 --> 00:08:38.639
according to Iowa coldcases dot Org, a friend of Jane's

144
00:08:38.679 --> 00:08:40.879
went to the mobile home park to visit her, but

145
00:08:41.080 --> 00:08:43.960
she didn't appear to be home. No one answered the

146
00:08:44.000 --> 00:08:47.480
door when they knocked, so the friend left. This friend

147
00:08:47.600 --> 00:08:49.919
likely assumed that Jane was out for the day or

148
00:08:49.960 --> 00:08:55.720
maybe running errands. However, on September eighth, a Monday, Jane

149
00:08:55.799 --> 00:08:58.759
failed to turn up for the school day. According to

150
00:08:58.799 --> 00:09:02.080
another article for the Gazett. The principal of Penn Elementary School,

151
00:09:02.159 --> 00:09:05.240
Larry Sharp, was concerned when he couldn't reach Jane after

152
00:09:05.279 --> 00:09:09.200
she failed to turn up her classes. School officials called

153
00:09:09.200 --> 00:09:11.759
the manager of the Bonair Mobile home park, who in

154
00:09:11.840 --> 00:09:15.080
turn called Jane's new boyfriend, who were both unable to

155
00:09:15.120 --> 00:09:18.080
reach her. The manager and the boyfriend both went to

156
00:09:18.159 --> 00:09:21.360
her home. They noticed her bicycle locked up and her

157
00:09:21.399 --> 00:09:25.799
carnet's parking space. The police were notified and when they arrived,

158
00:09:26.159 --> 00:09:29.679
investigators found her belongings in the trailer and evidence that

159
00:09:29.720 --> 00:09:32.600
she had recently showered, But there was no sign of

160
00:09:32.679 --> 00:09:35.799
Jane anywhere, nor was there any sign of foul play.

161
00:09:35.879 --> 00:09:38.200
While there were no obvious signs of a struggle or

162
00:09:38.240 --> 00:09:41.000
that something had happened to Jane, there was also zero

163
00:09:41.080 --> 00:09:44.200
evidence to suggest she had run off, as all of

164
00:09:44.240 --> 00:09:48.480
her belongings were where they should be. Detective William Kidwell

165
00:09:48.559 --> 00:09:51.480
said quote, there was nothing in her home to indicate violence.

166
00:09:51.879 --> 00:09:53.759
It would appear that she had just left the trailer

167
00:09:53.799 --> 00:09:56.840
and was going to come back. Very soon. After Jane

168
00:09:56.879 --> 00:09:59.840
was reported missing, it was speculated that she had possibly

169
00:10:00.039 --> 00:10:02.600
and off with a cult referred to as Jesus People.

170
00:10:03.080 --> 00:10:06.399
As two previously reported missing people from Iowa City had

171
00:10:06.399 --> 00:10:10.080
been found with them in Coralville. According to the Gazette,

172
00:10:10.159 --> 00:10:13.759
investigations of the campsite revealed zero connection to Jane, and

173
00:10:13.840 --> 00:10:16.360
her family and friends said it was highly unlikely she

174
00:10:16.399 --> 00:10:20.279
would have gone off with them. Investigators confirmed her background

175
00:10:20.279 --> 00:10:23.159
information that she had no connection to the religious group.

176
00:10:24.360 --> 00:10:26.320
As a side note, this is not the first time

177
00:10:26.360 --> 00:10:28.960
I've mentioned the Jesus People movement, so if you want

178
00:10:28.960 --> 00:10:32.360
more information on that, you can listen to chapter one, fourteen,

179
00:10:32.440 --> 00:10:35.840
where I cover the disappearance of Jeanette's palma. As police

180
00:10:35.879 --> 00:10:38.799
candae the area, talking to neighbors and looking for leeds,

181
00:10:39.240 --> 00:10:42.440
they learned from residents that late Saturday night, yelling or

182
00:10:42.440 --> 00:10:45.240
screaming had been heard, but no one was positive where

183
00:10:45.279 --> 00:10:48.480
the sound was coming from. As there was a party

184
00:10:48.519 --> 00:10:51.240
being thrown at the time that was very noisy. Most

185
00:10:51.320 --> 00:10:53.960
assumed the yelling had come from the partiers and they

186
00:10:54.000 --> 00:10:57.639
didn't think much of it. Captain Patrick Carney of the

187
00:10:57.679 --> 00:11:00.679
Iowa City Police said of this report and report from

188
00:11:00.679 --> 00:11:04.279
the friend that tried to visit Jane that Sunday quote. Obviously,

189
00:11:04.360 --> 00:11:08.200
between Saturday night and Sunday morning, she disappeared Two days

190
00:11:08.240 --> 00:11:11.480
after Jane was reported missing, Iowa City police drained two

191
00:11:11.559 --> 00:11:14.440
lagoons near the mobile home park, but nothing relating to

192
00:11:14.519 --> 00:11:18.720
Jane's case was found. Then a month later, in October,

193
00:11:19.159 --> 00:11:21.960
the Sheriff's office in Lyon County, Kansas called and said

194
00:11:21.960 --> 00:11:24.879
that they had received a tip from a man in Emporia, Kansas,

195
00:11:25.279 --> 00:11:28.360
who reportedly heard two males talking in a motel room

196
00:11:28.399 --> 00:11:31.799
about getting rid of a woman. They allegedly said of

197
00:11:31.799 --> 00:11:34.639
disposing of the woman, quote the same way we did

198
00:11:34.679 --> 00:11:37.320
that one back in Iowa City in a sewage lagoon.

199
00:11:38.519 --> 00:11:40.600
The man that reported this was staying in the room

200
00:11:40.639 --> 00:11:42.960
next door and could hear a bulk of this conversation,

201
00:11:43.559 --> 00:11:45.679
but he was unable to give any sort of description

202
00:11:45.799 --> 00:11:48.799
of the men or their vehicle. Kansas police said that

203
00:11:48.840 --> 00:11:51.960
the man did not report the information immediately upon hearing it,

204
00:11:52.360 --> 00:11:55.240
but it was unclear how soon after Jane's disappearance this

205
00:11:55.279 --> 00:11:59.240
alleged conversation took place. As a side note in a

206
00:11:59.279 --> 00:12:01.840
nineteen ninety two article for the Gazette, it was stated

207
00:12:01.879 --> 00:12:06.360
that this conversation was actually overheard in August before Jane

208
00:12:06.399 --> 00:12:10.000
wit missing. In response to the tip, Iowa City police

209
00:12:10.039 --> 00:12:13.799
drained two ponds near Jane's home, though admittedly not lagoons,

210
00:12:14.320 --> 00:12:16.840
over the course of nine and a half hours, but

211
00:12:16.879 --> 00:12:20.639
nothing was found to aid in the investigation. At the

212
00:12:20.679 --> 00:12:24.039
possibility of draining other bodies of water, Acting Police Chief

213
00:12:24.120 --> 00:12:27.279
David Epstein said that it was quote under discussion, and

214
00:12:27.320 --> 00:12:30.960
they had no other leads at that point. Police had

215
00:12:30.960 --> 00:12:34.720
administered multiple polygraphs to different individuals connected to Jane by

216
00:12:34.720 --> 00:12:38.000
this point and all had passed, though one person of

217
00:12:38.039 --> 00:12:41.080
interest allegedly refused to take one. At a loss as

218
00:12:41.120 --> 00:12:43.600
to where to look next, the police turned to psychics

219
00:12:43.600 --> 00:12:47.919
for assistance in the search for Jane. Detective Kidwell said, quote.

220
00:12:48.000 --> 00:12:50.120
The psychics all said she'd be found in a body

221
00:12:50.120 --> 00:12:52.799
of water. Some said she'd be as close as one

222
00:12:52.840 --> 00:12:55.480
and a half miles from her residence, and the farthest

223
00:12:55.519 --> 00:12:59.519
distance was eight hundred and fifteen miles. Four months after

224
00:12:59.600 --> 00:13:03.159
Jane Disas disappeared, according to The Gazette, a confidential informant

225
00:13:03.240 --> 00:13:06.080
approached police and said that a friend of theirs had

226
00:13:06.120 --> 00:13:09.960
admitted to murdering Jane and cremating her body in an insiderator.

227
00:13:10.519 --> 00:13:13.360
The informant claimed this individual had driven to the airport

228
00:13:13.399 --> 00:13:16.399
on September sixth and cedar Rapids to rent a car

229
00:13:16.559 --> 00:13:19.360
this same make and model as Jane's boyfriend in an

230
00:13:19.399 --> 00:13:23.799
attempt to incriminate him. This person then drove to Jane's

231
00:13:23.799 --> 00:13:27.519
home and killed her after an argument via manual strangulation.

232
00:13:28.200 --> 00:13:31.799
Before transporting her body to the apartment where John Wakefield,

233
00:13:32.000 --> 00:13:36.480
jane soon to be ex husband, was living. The individual

234
00:13:36.519 --> 00:13:39.039
placed Jane's body, as well as trash bags and a

235
00:13:39.120 --> 00:13:42.399
large amount of charcoal in the building's incinerator and started

236
00:13:42.399 --> 00:13:45.799
the fire. After the fire was out, this person swept

237
00:13:45.840 --> 00:13:48.320
out the incinerator and the contents were placed into a

238
00:13:48.360 --> 00:13:51.879
garbage bag, which was then strewn along a ditch somewhere

239
00:13:51.879 --> 00:13:55.840
on the shoulder of I eighty. This informant was given

240
00:13:55.879 --> 00:13:59.120
a polygraph test as well, and they passed, though their

241
00:13:59.159 --> 00:14:02.240
identity and the identity of their friend has never been

242
00:14:02.240 --> 00:14:05.519
released by police, though we'll talk about that in a moment.

243
00:14:06.159 --> 00:14:09.399
Days after this information was told to police, Captain kl

244
00:14:09.480 --> 00:14:12.600
Stock said that there was quote significant new evidence to

245
00:14:12.639 --> 00:14:16.960
suspect foul play. According to the Daily Iowan, however, quote

246
00:14:17.000 --> 00:14:19.679
there is no proof that Wakefield is deceased, but when

247
00:14:19.720 --> 00:14:22.279
foul play is indicated, it usually does mean that the

248
00:14:22.279 --> 00:14:26.200
person is deceased. Search warrants were then obtained for the

249
00:14:26.240 --> 00:14:30.159
apartment building, incinerator and Bold businesses owned by John, a

250
00:14:30.240 --> 00:14:34.080
lounge and billiard parlor. According to the Gazette, the police

251
00:14:34.120 --> 00:14:38.240
were specifically looking for quote, ashes, bones or particles, or

252
00:14:38.240 --> 00:14:42.519
any body particles or clothing, any papers describing the commission

253
00:14:42.519 --> 00:14:44.840
of the burning of a body, or any other physical

254
00:14:44.840 --> 00:14:47.480
evidence of the death of Jane Wakefield or relating to

255
00:14:47.519 --> 00:14:51.600
her disappearance. Investigators were joined by agents from the Iowa

256
00:14:51.639 --> 00:14:55.279
Division of Criminal Investigation to conduct the search, and from

257
00:14:55.320 --> 00:14:58.840
the Insiderator they collected various pieces of bone debris, a

258
00:14:58.960 --> 00:15:01.360
very small piece of mesas that was possibly from a

259
00:15:01.360 --> 00:15:04.320
tooth filling, and very small chips of what could have

260
00:15:04.360 --> 00:15:07.919
been bone. More than one vacuum owned by John was

261
00:15:07.960 --> 00:15:11.679
also seized. Protesting tests were conducted on what was found,

262
00:15:11.720 --> 00:15:15.879
but nothing was conclusively identified as being connected to Jane's disappearance.

263
00:15:16.759 --> 00:15:19.960
Investigators also literally got on their hands and knees to

264
00:15:20.000 --> 00:15:23.120
search along miles worth of ditches on I eighty looking

265
00:15:23.159 --> 00:15:25.600
for any of the debris alleged to have been scattered there,

266
00:15:25.799 --> 00:15:30.600
but nothing was found relating to Jane's case. Captain Harney said, quote,

267
00:15:30.919 --> 00:15:33.840
so much time elapsed between the time that she disappeared

268
00:15:33.919 --> 00:15:36.240
and the time we got information indicating what might have

269
00:15:36.320 --> 00:15:39.360
happened to her, anybody would have had plenty of time

270
00:15:39.399 --> 00:15:42.360
to go back and change their mistakes. A one thousand

271
00:15:42.399 --> 00:15:45.440
dollars reward was offered by Jane's mother and stepfather for

272
00:15:45.519 --> 00:15:49.080
any information leading to the arrest of the individuals responsible

273
00:15:49.080 --> 00:15:53.039
for her disappearance. John also claimed to have put up

274
00:15:53.120 --> 00:15:56.080
a one thousand dollars reward, although it's unclear if he

275
00:15:56.120 --> 00:15:58.600
offered money with her parents, was claiming to have put

276
00:15:58.679 --> 00:16:01.960
up that money himself, or if he offered an additional

277
00:16:01.960 --> 00:16:05.639
one thousand dollars in reward money. To help raise more

278
00:16:05.720 --> 00:16:08.879
money to encourage witnesses to come forward, the Iowa City

279
00:16:09.000 --> 00:16:14.559
Education Association launched a fundraiser. While investigators in Jane's family

280
00:16:14.639 --> 00:16:17.440
was hopeful someone would come forward, no one ever did,

281
00:16:17.960 --> 00:16:21.360
and Jane's case quickly went cold, being declared in active

282
00:16:21.480 --> 00:16:25.480
after the summer of nineteen seventy six. The money collected

283
00:16:25.519 --> 00:16:28.879
by the Education Association as it went unclaimed, went into

284
00:16:28.919 --> 00:16:31.720
a scholarship fund for Iowa City graduates who were in

285
00:16:31.759 --> 00:16:35.440
teacher training programs. While John was pretty quiet regarding his

286
00:16:35.559 --> 00:16:39.120
estranged wife's disappearance initially a decade later, he was a

287
00:16:39.159 --> 00:16:43.639
bit more vocal. Ten years after her disappearance, John told

288
00:16:43.639 --> 00:16:46.840
the Gazette quote, it seems to me if she decided

289
00:16:46.840 --> 00:16:49.600
to drop out and take a new identity somewhere along

290
00:16:49.639 --> 00:16:52.000
the way, she would have given me a call. She's

291
00:16:52.039 --> 00:16:55.480
either decided to never resurface or she's dead. He was

292
00:16:55.519 --> 00:16:58.360
also insistent that he couldn't understand why he was ever

293
00:16:58.440 --> 00:17:02.360
considered a suspect in Jane's disay appearance. John admitted that

294
00:17:02.360 --> 00:17:05.200
the confidential informant had told police he was the one

295
00:17:05.200 --> 00:17:07.759
to have killed Jane, but he said that the informant

296
00:17:07.799 --> 00:17:10.519
was pressured into giving a statement to make robbery charges

297
00:17:10.559 --> 00:17:14.880
go away. The police did say that this accusation was false.

298
00:17:15.640 --> 00:17:18.680
John claimed, according to the Iowa City Press Citizen, that

299
00:17:18.799 --> 00:17:22.519
he had an alibi for Jane's disappearance. He was allegedly

300
00:17:22.599 --> 00:17:25.880
drag racing with friends until ten pm that Saturday, and

301
00:17:25.960 --> 00:17:28.799
on Sunday he was with another friend until twelve thirty

302
00:17:28.799 --> 00:17:32.160
in the morning. However, Captain Harney said they were never

303
00:17:32.240 --> 00:17:35.000
able to verify the alibi of the theory that he

304
00:17:35.039 --> 00:17:38.400
had killed and cremated Jane. John said, quote, it sounds

305
00:17:38.400 --> 00:17:41.400
like total bullshit to me. At one point, they're digging

306
00:17:41.440 --> 00:17:44.400
up sewage lagoons. At one point, they're digging up my lot.

307
00:17:44.960 --> 00:17:47.079
As far as I'm concerned, it was just one in

308
00:17:47.160 --> 00:17:50.759
a string of several events. They sniffed into every orifice

309
00:17:50.759 --> 00:17:53.200
in my psyche and body. As far as I'm concerned,

310
00:17:54.039 --> 00:17:56.200
John claimed that he had no reason to want Jane

311
00:17:56.200 --> 00:17:59.599
to disappear. Quote, it's a lot more expensive to me

312
00:17:59.680 --> 00:18:02.519
to have disappear than to have borrowed seven thousand dollars

313
00:18:02.599 --> 00:18:05.279
or five thousand dollars from family members or the bank

314
00:18:05.319 --> 00:18:08.200
and pay her. Not only did I lose a friend

315
00:18:08.279 --> 00:18:10.839
and somebody I hoped to get back together with, it

316
00:18:10.880 --> 00:18:14.359
was incredibly expensive in terms of my life. John would

317
00:18:14.359 --> 00:18:17.039
go on to claim that he was relentlessly harassed and

318
00:18:17.079 --> 00:18:19.400
threatened by members of the public who believed him to

319
00:18:19.440 --> 00:18:23.799
be responsible for Jane's disappearance for years. He alleged that

320
00:18:23.839 --> 00:18:26.000
he was let go from his position as manager of

321
00:18:26.079 --> 00:18:29.039
the apartment building he lived in due to the constant attention.

322
00:18:29.759 --> 00:18:31.759
He had been held at knifepoint, and his car and

323
00:18:31.799 --> 00:18:36.200
billiard parlor were vandalized even a decade later. He believed

324
00:18:36.240 --> 00:18:39.119
that publicly speaking about Jane would lead to more harassment

325
00:18:39.119 --> 00:18:42.720
and threats. Jane was never declared legally dead, though the

326
00:18:42.759 --> 00:18:45.720
police presume her to be, and foul play is suspected,

327
00:18:45.960 --> 00:18:50.279
though a suspect has never been publicly announced. Jane's final

328
00:18:50.319 --> 00:18:53.920
paycheck and her belongings from her estate totaling ten thousand dollars,

329
00:18:54.079 --> 00:18:56.759
was placed in a conservatorship by court order, with her

330
00:18:56.759 --> 00:18:59.799
stepfather being given charge of it. At the time of

331
00:18:59.799 --> 00:19:03.319
her disappearance, Jane Wakefield was twenty six years old, five

332
00:19:03.400 --> 00:19:06.319
to two and one hundred and twelve pounds. She had

333
00:19:06.319 --> 00:19:08.880
blonde hair and green eyes, and she wore gold wire

334
00:19:08.920 --> 00:19:13.200
rimmed glasses. She's also missing her fourteenth tooth, which is

335
00:19:13.240 --> 00:19:16.319
the third tooth from the molar on the upper right side.

336
00:19:16.359 --> 00:19:19.920
Anyone with information regarding her disappearance or a possible murder

337
00:19:20.039 --> 00:19:22.480
is asked to call the Iowa City Police Department at

338
00:19:22.519 --> 00:19:27.079
three one nine three five six five four five to one.

339
00:19:27.119 --> 00:19:29.799
The case number to reference is J one six dashed

340
00:19:29.839 --> 00:19:33.359
seventy five. Jane's case is one that likely will not

341
00:19:33.480 --> 00:19:37.039
be solved unless someone comes forward or strong evidence is found.

342
00:19:37.720 --> 00:19:40.559
Though fifty years after the fact, it's hard to imagine

343
00:19:40.640 --> 00:19:44.559
that that could happen, especially if the informance information is accurate.

344
00:19:45.480 --> 00:19:48.759
John Wakefield, my knowledge is still alive. He moved around

345
00:19:48.839 --> 00:19:51.440
quite a bit in the years after Jane's disappearance, and

346
00:19:51.559 --> 00:19:54.839
he appears to be living in South Dakota. But again,

347
00:19:54.920 --> 00:19:56.839
he has never been named as a suspect by the

348
00:19:56.880 --> 00:20:01.400
police in any official capacity, and any potential evidence found

349
00:20:01.440 --> 00:20:05.079
during the searches of his apartment and the incinerator and

350
00:20:05.119 --> 00:20:09.519
his businesses we're tested at the time, but nothing conclusive

351
00:20:09.640 --> 00:20:14.000
is found, and it's very likely that any evidence still

352
00:20:14.359 --> 00:20:18.519
available to test is either too degraded or the samples

353
00:20:18.519 --> 00:20:23.000
are just too small. But hopefully, with advancements in technology,

354
00:20:23.319 --> 00:20:26.559
if they were to retest, maybe they get some answers.

355
00:20:27.759 --> 00:20:30.680
As always, I thank you so much for listening, and

356
00:20:30.759 --> 00:20:34.799
I hope you have a wonderful week and I will

357
00:20:34.839 --> 00:20:37.559
see you in the next chapter of the Book of

358
00:20:37.599 --> 00:20:44.039
the Dead. Bye, guys. Another page closed. But the story

359
00:20:44.200 --> 00:20:48.519
isn't over for the families left behind. The pain doesn't

360
00:20:48.599 --> 00:20:52.079
end when the headline's fade, And for the victims, we

361
00:20:52.200 --> 00:20:57.039
owe them more than silence for our unsolved cases. If

362
00:20:57.079 --> 00:21:00.000
you have any information, please reach out to local authority

363
00:21:00.480 --> 00:21:04.559
or visit our show notes for links and resources. Someone

364
00:21:04.640 --> 00:21:10.480
out there knows something, maybe it's you. Thank you for

365
00:21:10.599 --> 00:21:13.519
listening to the Book of the Dead. If this story

366
00:21:13.599 --> 00:21:16.480
moved or spoke to you in some way, talk about it,

367
00:21:17.000 --> 00:21:21.920
share it, keep their names alive. Until next time, I'm

368
00:21:22.000 --> 00:21:28.720
Courtney Liso. Stay safe, stay curious, and stay vigilant. And

369
00:21:28.880 --> 00:21:32.680
remember the dead may be gone, but their stories will

370
00:21:32.680 --> 00:21:33.799
not be forgotten.
