Chapter 121: Vienna's Ice Cream Shop Murders-The Case of Estibaliz Carranza

Chapter 121: Vienna's Ice Cream Shop Murders-The Case of Estibaliz Carranza

When renovation crews began digging beneath a small ice cream shop in Vienna, they didn’t expect to uncover a gruesome secret. What they found unraveled the double life of Estibaliz Carranza, a woman who hid two murders for years. Dubbed The Ice Lady of Austria, Establiz's crimes spun the media into a frenzy, especially when she was represented by the very same man who defended another of Austria's most notorious criminals.

00:00:01.399 --> 00:00:06.200
Every story has a beginning, but not everyone has an ending.

2
00:00:07.360 --> 00:00:10.359
In the shadows of headlines and buried police reports lay

3
00:00:10.400 --> 00:00:13.960
the voices of the missing, the murdered, and the forgotten,

4
00:00:14.720 --> 00:00:18.679
waiting to be heard and have their stories told. This

5
00:00:19.079 --> 00:00:22.079
is The Book of the Dead, a true crime podcast

6
00:00:22.160 --> 00:00:27.559
where we remember forgotten victims of heinous crimes, reopen cold cases,

7
00:00:28.079 --> 00:00:32.560
re visit haunting disappearances, and uncover the truths buried beneath

8
00:00:32.560 --> 00:00:37.600
the years of silence. I'm your host, Courtney Liso, and

9
00:00:37.719 --> 00:00:43.640
every week we turn to another chapter, one victim, one mystery,

10
00:00:44.520 --> 00:00:48.399
one step closer to justice. Brought to you by Darkast

11
00:00:48.479 --> 00:01:13.359
Network Indeed Podcasts with the Twist. Hello, Hello, Welcome to

12
00:01:13.400 --> 00:01:16.560
the next chapter in the Book of the Dead. If

13
00:01:16.599 --> 00:01:20.079
you've listened to this podcast for any length of time,

14
00:01:20.760 --> 00:01:23.439
you know that I don't just cover cases in America,

15
00:01:23.719 --> 00:01:27.319
but all around the world. From the Kobe child killer

16
00:01:27.359 --> 00:01:33.159
in Japan, Russia's Academy Maniacs, the murder of Dadiyushianizuski and Poland,

17
00:01:33.439 --> 00:01:37.959
and most recently, Italy's Beasts of Satan. These are just

18
00:01:38.079 --> 00:01:42.680
a few examples of the crimes I've covered globally. For

19
00:01:42.840 --> 00:01:46.560
my first chapter, though I started in Austria telling the

20
00:01:46.599 --> 00:01:49.760
story of the Lean's Angels of Death, and I haven't

21
00:01:49.799 --> 00:01:56.239
covered a case from there since until today. While Austria's

22
00:01:56.239 --> 00:02:00.120
most high profile case is that of Joseph Fritzel, there

23
00:02:00.359 --> 00:02:04.079
is another case that received a fair amount of worldwide

24
00:02:04.200 --> 00:02:10.840
media attention, especially after Fritzl's defense attorney Rudolph Meyer, famously

25
00:02:10.919 --> 00:02:15.879
represented this client as well. This is a case where

26
00:02:15.919 --> 00:02:19.319
two men were murdered by a woman that psychiatrists have

27
00:02:19.439 --> 00:02:24.039
said would be guaranteed to kill again should she be released,

28
00:02:25.400 --> 00:02:29.919
someone so stonefaced and cold hearted that the Austrian press

29
00:02:30.000 --> 00:02:34.199
dubbed her the Ice Lady. This is the story of

30
00:02:34.360 --> 00:02:38.759
Establize Carranza. I do want to preface this really quickly

31
00:02:38.879 --> 00:02:41.240
by saying that this is the type of case where

32
00:02:41.280 --> 00:02:47.280
there is almost no information about the victims. As I

33
00:02:47.319 --> 00:02:49.520
said when I covered Krista Pike and the murder of

34
00:02:49.560 --> 00:02:53.840
Colleen Slummer in nineteen ninety five, this case is not

35
00:02:54.080 --> 00:02:57.680
about the killer, who we would know nothing about had

36
00:02:57.719 --> 00:03:01.319
it not been for the men Esta Belice case, So

37
00:03:01.560 --> 00:03:05.240
I do ask you to bear that in mind. Este

38
00:03:05.240 --> 00:03:09.599
Belize Caranzo was born in Mexico sometime in nineteen seventy eight,

39
00:03:09.800 --> 00:03:13.360
and as a child, her family moved to Barcelona, Spain.

40
00:03:14.680 --> 00:03:17.560
Now not much is known about her early life, but

41
00:03:17.719 --> 00:03:22.280
she was described as highly intelligent and ambitious, as well

42
00:03:22.319 --> 00:03:27.000
as very pretty, though her peers described Establiz as something

43
00:03:27.400 --> 00:03:31.680
being a little bit off about her. This could have

44
00:03:31.800 --> 00:03:34.080
been contributed to the fact that she grew up in

45
00:03:34.120 --> 00:03:40.199
a strict household with a reportedly incredibly overbearing father, which

46
00:03:40.319 --> 00:03:43.560
had a profound impact in shaping the woman she would

47
00:03:43.639 --> 00:03:48.719
ultimately become. Esteblice wrote in a memoir published in twenty seventeen,

48
00:03:48.840 --> 00:03:53.599
according to BBC, that her father rarely showed affection and

49
00:03:53.680 --> 00:03:58.759
she was encouraged to suppress her emotions. She also wrote quote,

50
00:03:59.199 --> 00:04:02.319
I believed I had to serve men, no matter how

51
00:04:02.360 --> 00:04:06.439
they behaved towards me. As she grew into an adult,

52
00:04:06.719 --> 00:04:09.879
este Belice's mother urged her to focus on her education,

53
00:04:10.439 --> 00:04:13.719
encouraging her daughter to get a career and build financial

54
00:04:13.759 --> 00:04:19.279
stability before starting a family. However, as to Belice, while

55
00:04:19.319 --> 00:04:22.920
an honor student and committed to her studies, wanted to

56
00:04:22.959 --> 00:04:25.680
find a husband to take care of her and give

57
00:04:25.720 --> 00:04:31.000
her the child she dreamed of having. According to German publications,

58
00:04:31.199 --> 00:04:33.279
ES to Belie had been engaged to a man while

59
00:04:33.319 --> 00:04:37.480
living in Spain, and during this time it's when she

60
00:04:37.720 --> 00:04:42.240
started to have concerning thoughts about the people around her,

61
00:04:43.079 --> 00:04:46.959
namely men who either vastly disappointed her in some way

62
00:04:47.759 --> 00:04:53.639
or treated her badly. Allegedly, her fiance was quite controlling,

63
00:04:53.759 --> 00:04:56.959
and she fantasized about causing a car accident while he

64
00:04:57.079 --> 00:05:02.920
was driving. Thankful for her fiance, as to police, opted

65
00:05:02.959 --> 00:05:06.120
to break off the engagement and bought a ticket to Germany,

66
00:05:06.199 --> 00:05:10.040
where her ex couldn't follow her. He didn't know the language,

67
00:05:10.079 --> 00:05:12.879
but she did so she set up to start her

68
00:05:12.920 --> 00:05:16.319
new life in Berlin sometime in two thousand, when she

69
00:05:16.480 --> 00:05:20.800
was around twenty years old. Some reports claimed she was

70
00:05:20.839 --> 00:05:24.639
going to further her education studying language, and some say

71
00:05:24.720 --> 00:05:27.879
she came to work as an alpair, but either way,

72
00:05:28.319 --> 00:05:30.800
she ended up taking a job working in an ice

73
00:05:30.839 --> 00:05:36.079
cream parlor. The man she worked for was allegedly also

74
00:05:36.279 --> 00:05:39.639
very controlling and was so strict he didn't even allow

75
00:05:39.720 --> 00:05:42.519
as the Belice to use the bathroom during her ships.

76
00:05:44.480 --> 00:05:47.920
As a result, her violent thoughts started up again, and

77
00:05:48.120 --> 00:05:51.480
she started researching ways to set fire to the shop.

78
00:05:52.279 --> 00:05:55.560
She did ultimately decide not to burn the place down,

79
00:05:55.839 --> 00:05:58.759
but not because she worried that her boss could be

80
00:05:58.879 --> 00:06:02.800
hurt or even die in the fire, but because she

81
00:06:02.920 --> 00:06:07.240
would end up in prison if she were caught. Sometime

82
00:06:07.319 --> 00:06:09.920
in two thousand and two, as to Belie, meets a

83
00:06:09.920 --> 00:06:13.519
man named Hulgar Holtz. He was in his thirties, and

84
00:06:13.759 --> 00:06:17.040
it seemed like she really believed she had found her

85
00:06:17.079 --> 00:06:21.160
prince charming. The two married and moved to Vienna, where

86
00:06:21.160 --> 00:06:25.839
they opened an ice cream parlor of their own called Schlikaria. However,

87
00:06:26.560 --> 00:06:31.959
much to Astbliss's dismay, Hulgar changed after their wedding. According

88
00:06:31.959 --> 00:06:36.959
to Courier News, Hugar, a gun enthusiast, was allegedly quick

89
00:06:37.040 --> 00:06:43.000
tempered and violent. He was also reportedly very lazy, especially

90
00:06:43.040 --> 00:06:47.680
after joining the Hare Krishna movement. According to NBC, the

91
00:06:47.720 --> 00:06:51.720
Harry Krishna Movement, or as it's also called, the International

92
00:06:51.759 --> 00:06:56.680
Society for Krishna Consciousness, is a fairly new movement under

93
00:06:56.759 --> 00:07:00.160
sixty years old, and was founded in nineteen sixty six

94
00:07:00.360 --> 00:07:05.079
in New York City. It falls under the umbrella of Hinduism,

95
00:07:05.279 --> 00:07:09.079
though it is a monotheistic belief system and is quote

96
00:07:09.199 --> 00:07:12.800
based on the historic texts of the devotional Bakti yoga tradition,

97
00:07:13.120 --> 00:07:16.439
which teaches the ultimate goal for all living beings is

98
00:07:16.519 --> 00:07:19.800
to reawaken their love for God or Lord Krishna, the

99
00:07:19.920 --> 00:07:24.959
all attractive one. According to their website, this movement, which

100
00:07:25.079 --> 00:07:29.079
has a heavy emphasis on devotional yoga, has millions of

101
00:07:29.120 --> 00:07:34.160
congregational members, and they have also opened various hospitals, schools,

102
00:07:34.360 --> 00:07:39.720
free food distribution organizations, among other community ran projects to

103
00:07:39.800 --> 00:07:44.519
promote their beliefs. It has also been favorably recognized by

104
00:07:44.600 --> 00:07:49.720
various leading academics for its authenticity. Professor Diana ak, who

105
00:07:49.800 --> 00:07:54.360
teaches comparative religion and Indian studies at Harvard University, described

106
00:07:54.360 --> 00:07:58.240
the movement as quote a tradition that commands a respected

107
00:07:58.279 --> 00:08:02.160
place in the religious life of humans kind, and one

108
00:08:02.160 --> 00:08:05.199
of the world's leading authorities on Indian history and culture,

109
00:08:05.360 --> 00:08:08.800
said of Hari Krishna that it quote arose out of

110
00:08:08.879 --> 00:08:11.639
next to nothing in less than twenty years and has

111
00:08:11.720 --> 00:08:15.160
become known all over the West. This, I feel, is

112
00:08:15.199 --> 00:08:17.600
a sign of the times and an important fact in

113
00:08:17.639 --> 00:08:21.680
the history of the Western world. With this being said,

114
00:08:21.959 --> 00:08:25.839
I'm a bit under the impression that Holger was not

115
00:08:26.079 --> 00:08:31.319
a strict follower of this movement. The reason I say

116
00:08:31.319 --> 00:08:34.519
this is that while it's reported that his laziness could

117
00:08:34.559 --> 00:08:37.320
be attributed to the fact that he was unwilling to work,

118
00:08:37.759 --> 00:08:41.240
he slept all day, and he allegedly spent a majority

119
00:08:41.360 --> 00:08:44.879
of his waking hours playing video games. All of this,

120
00:08:45.200 --> 00:08:48.559
based on the description of Hari Krishna, would lead me

121
00:08:48.639 --> 00:08:51.159
to believe while he may have aligned himself with this

122
00:08:51.240 --> 00:08:57.200
belief system, Holger wasn't actually following its practices. And the

123
00:08:57.240 --> 00:08:59.799
only reason I mention this at all is because most

124
00:09:00.000 --> 00:09:03.320
reports make it seem like Hari Krishna was the cause

125
00:09:03.399 --> 00:09:06.720
of his lack of motivation, and I just don't think

126
00:09:06.759 --> 00:09:12.759
that that's the case. Either way, Establie was becoming increasingly

127
00:09:12.799 --> 00:09:17.639
frustrated with Hulger. She said, according to NBC quote, he

128
00:09:17.720 --> 00:09:20.799
slept until ten o'clock. We had no ice cream, He

129
00:09:20.879 --> 00:09:25.120
did nothing. He didn't want to get a grip. To

130
00:09:25.360 --> 00:09:30.000
add to Establize's resentment towards her husband, Holger also seemed

131
00:09:30.080 --> 00:09:34.879
uninterested in giving her what she desperately wanted, a baby,

132
00:09:36.519 --> 00:09:40.879
with her efforts to seduce him becoming repeatedly unsuccessful and

133
00:09:40.960 --> 00:09:43.639
the two struggling financially to the point where they had

134
00:09:43.639 --> 00:09:46.879
to move into the ice cream shop. They would ultimately

135
00:09:46.919 --> 00:09:52.399
divorce sometime in two thousand and six. However, because money

136
00:09:52.399 --> 00:09:56.200
had become such a problem, Hulger did not move out,

137
00:09:56.240 --> 00:09:58.639
and he would remain in their apartment for the next

138
00:09:58.679 --> 00:10:04.480
two years. Eventually, Establice began seeing a new man. His

139
00:10:04.639 --> 00:10:07.559
name was Manfred Hinterberger, and they met when he came

140
00:10:07.600 --> 00:10:12.240
to sell her machinery for her store. Some reports say

141
00:10:12.240 --> 00:10:15.000
that Estebalice would go on to move in with Manfred

142
00:10:15.120 --> 00:10:17.960
and Hulger still refused to move out of their apartment,

143
00:10:18.600 --> 00:10:22.240
while others suggested Estebalie wanted Manford to move in with her,

144
00:10:22.519 --> 00:10:25.559
but due to her ex husband's presence, he was unable

145
00:10:25.600 --> 00:10:29.960
to do so. She said quote, I was completely helpless.

146
00:10:30.240 --> 00:10:33.759
I thought I'd never get my life back either way.

147
00:10:34.000 --> 00:10:36.879
In two thousand and eight, two years after their divorce,

148
00:10:37.080 --> 00:10:40.120
as to Belice attempted to talk to Hulgar about finally

149
00:10:40.200 --> 00:10:44.720
moving out. Depending on the report you read, Huger either

150
00:10:44.799 --> 00:10:48.480
outright refused and turned his back on her, continuing to

151
00:10:48.519 --> 00:10:52.720
play on his computer, or during their argument he laughed

152
00:10:52.759 --> 00:10:56.559
at her for dating Manfred, who had been unfaithful, making

153
00:10:56.600 --> 00:10:59.879
fun of Estebalize for yet again choosing a man who

154
00:10:59.879 --> 00:11:03.720
couldn't give her what she wanted. Both versions of the

155
00:11:03.799 --> 00:11:08.279
story end the same way. Though furious with Hulger for

156
00:11:08.360 --> 00:11:12.440
being dismissive of her, Establize took his twenty two caliber

157
00:11:12.480 --> 00:11:15.159
bretta and shot him twice in the back of the head.

158
00:11:16.080 --> 00:11:20.080
Then allegedly she shot him at least four more times

159
00:11:20.120 --> 00:11:24.720
to make sure that the job was finished. According to Establise,

160
00:11:24.960 --> 00:11:28.559
she was initially horrified with what she had done, so

161
00:11:28.840 --> 00:11:32.679
repulsed that she was unable to touch his body, leaving Huger

162
00:11:32.759 --> 00:11:37.399
where he was for multiple days. Finally, she had to

163
00:11:37.480 --> 00:11:41.320
do something with the body, so first she attempted to

164
00:11:41.320 --> 00:11:44.600
burn him, but this produced too much smoke, so she

165
00:11:44.720 --> 00:11:48.799
purchased the chainsaw and dismembered Hulgar, encasing his remains in

166
00:11:48.879 --> 00:11:51.519
concrete and storing them in a deep freezer in the

167
00:11:51.559 --> 00:11:55.399
basement of her ice cream shop. Manfred would end up

168
00:11:55.440 --> 00:11:58.799
coming back into Establie's life, claiming to love her and

169
00:11:58.879 --> 00:12:01.639
that he wanted a child with her, that he would

170
00:12:01.639 --> 00:12:05.159
be faithful. She said, quote, I could have said no,

171
00:12:05.639 --> 00:12:08.960
broken up with him. I couldn't make it. I just

172
00:12:08.960 --> 00:12:12.519
couldn't get rid of him, not that long. I loved him.

173
00:12:13.039 --> 00:12:15.039
He would go on to move into her home and

174
00:12:15.240 --> 00:12:18.039
he helped us to Police run the shop, but she

175
00:12:18.320 --> 00:12:22.440
soon grew frustrated with Manfred as well. Two years into

176
00:12:22.559 --> 00:12:26.720
living together, she suspected Manfred of cheating on her once again.

177
00:12:28.000 --> 00:12:31.600
As her anger festered, she pursued shooting lessons and even

178
00:12:31.679 --> 00:12:35.240
took a chainsaw demonstration class at a local hardware store,

179
00:12:36.000 --> 00:12:40.200
although The Times Colonist reports her taking cement mixing classes instead.

180
00:12:41.600 --> 00:12:44.480
She even joked with friends about murderous fantasies that she

181
00:12:44.639 --> 00:12:48.639
was having. In November twenty ten, as to Police, confronted

182
00:12:48.679 --> 00:12:53.879
Manfred about his infidelity after she, according to NBC, found

183
00:12:53.919 --> 00:12:57.240
explicit text messages to other women on his phone, a

184
00:12:57.320 --> 00:13:01.159
dating profile, and caught him flirt with another woman at

185
00:13:01.200 --> 00:13:05.080
a party they had just attended. When he dismissed her

186
00:13:05.120 --> 00:13:08.960
as Hulger once had, rolling over and falling asleep, she

187
00:13:09.480 --> 00:13:13.879
was enraged, as the belice said, quote, it's like having

188
00:13:13.879 --> 00:13:16.840
a plastic bag over your head. You just have to

189
00:13:16.879 --> 00:13:19.080
get out. You have to get out. In that moment

190
00:13:20.399 --> 00:13:22.759
as he slept, she covered the walls and floor with

191
00:13:22.840 --> 00:13:26.480
plastic took the same beretta she had used to kill

192
00:13:26.519 --> 00:13:30.240
her husband and shot Manford four times in the head.

193
00:13:31.279 --> 00:13:33.840
She laid down a sheet and dismembered his body with

194
00:13:33.879 --> 00:13:37.840
the chainsaw, once again, storing the remains in containers of

195
00:13:37.919 --> 00:13:42.679
concrete and placing them in the basement deep freezer. Then

196
00:13:42.799 --> 00:13:46.639
she went to work like any other day, even with

197
00:13:46.799 --> 00:13:50.759
Manford's family reporting him missing. For a while as the police,

198
00:13:50.879 --> 00:13:53.879
lived her life as normal. She worked in her ice

199
00:13:53.919 --> 00:13:57.960
cream parlor, saw her friends, and even found herself a

200
00:13:58.000 --> 00:14:03.240
new boyfriend. She was thrilled when in June of twenty eleven,

201
00:14:03.399 --> 00:14:08.480
she found out she was pregnant. According to BBC dot Com,

202
00:14:08.559 --> 00:14:10.759
she spoke of how she hoped that no one would

203
00:14:10.799 --> 00:14:13.120
ever find out about the men she had killed, and

204
00:14:13.240 --> 00:14:16.039
she looked forward to the life she had always dreamed

205
00:14:16.080 --> 00:14:21.559
of that was finally becoming a reality. Unfortunately for Establie,

206
00:14:21.759 --> 00:14:26.559
her secrets would not stay buried for long. On the

207
00:14:26.720 --> 00:14:30.360
same day she found out she was pregnant, maintenance workers

208
00:14:30.360 --> 00:14:33.120
were called to Schlekaria by a tenant moving in to

209
00:14:33.159 --> 00:14:36.000
do some work in the basement when they noticed a

210
00:14:36.159 --> 00:14:41.200
foul odor coming from the deep freezer. Upon opening the freezer,

211
00:14:41.399 --> 00:14:45.720
they were horrified to discover human remains, and they immediately

212
00:14:45.799 --> 00:14:49.720
called the police, but Establice was gone. By the time

213
00:14:49.759 --> 00:14:53.960
that the police arrived. She had emptied her safety deposit

214
00:14:54.039 --> 00:14:58.399
box withdrew ten thousand euros from her savings, purchased a

215
00:14:58.399 --> 00:15:03.240
prepaid phone, and boutape gets to Paris. Afraid though that

216
00:15:03.320 --> 00:15:05.759
she would be caught waiting for her flight, she took

217
00:15:05.799 --> 00:15:08.679
a taxi to Eudene, Italy, which is a four hundred

218
00:15:08.720 --> 00:15:13.000
and eighty kilometer or three hundred mile drive through the Alps,

219
00:15:13.039 --> 00:15:15.720
and managed to convince a straight musician to let her

220
00:15:15.759 --> 00:15:20.360
stay with him. A few days after Estebalice made her escape,

221
00:15:20.559 --> 00:15:24.399
police found her in the man's home after he called them,

222
00:15:24.720 --> 00:15:29.080
suspicious of her behavior and her strange obsession with what

223
00:15:29.200 --> 00:15:33.200
the media had dubbed the ice cream shop murders. As

224
00:15:33.200 --> 00:15:38.440
to Belie was ultimately extradited back to Austria on June tenth.

225
00:15:38.559 --> 00:15:42.039
While she was incarcerated awaiting trial, as to Belie gave

226
00:15:42.080 --> 00:15:45.159
birth to a baby boy in January of twenty twelve

227
00:15:45.360 --> 00:15:48.320
and even married the father of her child, a man

228
00:15:48.440 --> 00:15:52.759
named Roland. Social services took the baby and placed him

229
00:15:52.759 --> 00:15:55.919
in the custody of his grandparents in Barcelona. As to

230
00:15:56.000 --> 00:15:58.320
Belice would not go to trial for the murders of

231
00:15:58.399 --> 00:16:02.399
Hulgar Holtz and Manfred Hinters until ten months later in

232
00:16:02.480 --> 00:16:06.120
November of twenty twelve, which would go on to last

233
00:16:06.240 --> 00:16:10.919
four days. She had confessed fully to police about the

234
00:16:11.000 --> 00:16:13.960
murders and would go on to plead guilty, but she

235
00:16:14.159 --> 00:16:18.480
hoped that her quote mitigating circumstances would grant her leniency

236
00:16:18.600 --> 00:16:23.519
in sentencing. According to an article for Lanueva Espana, while

237
00:16:23.679 --> 00:16:26.279
s to Bealie maintained that her motive for the murders

238
00:16:26.399 --> 00:16:30.000
was the mistreatment she was subjected to that caused fitz rage,

239
00:16:30.480 --> 00:16:34.360
the Austrian media reported that there was a monetary motive

240
00:16:34.480 --> 00:16:38.600
as well. Hulger invested one hundred thousand euros to help

241
00:16:38.720 --> 00:16:42.039
s to police open the ice cream shop, and even

242
00:16:42.080 --> 00:16:44.720
though she gave him ten thousand euros in the divorce,

243
00:16:44.960 --> 00:16:48.559
there was speculation that they were arguing over who would

244
00:16:48.559 --> 00:16:51.480
take over ownership of the ice cream shop at the

245
00:16:51.519 --> 00:16:55.879
time of his murder. There was also speculation that Manfred

246
00:16:55.960 --> 00:16:59.440
had ultimately invested large sums of money into the store

247
00:16:59.480 --> 00:17:03.360
as well will, though this was never substantiated. While the

248
00:17:03.440 --> 00:17:06.319
media was already having a field day with the ice

249
00:17:06.359 --> 00:17:10.799
cream murders and the Austrian ice Lady. They were spun

250
00:17:10.920 --> 00:17:13.880
into even more of a frenzy when it was announced

251
00:17:13.880 --> 00:17:18.440
that Estebalize would be represented by Werner, Tominik and Rudolph Meyer.

252
00:17:19.640 --> 00:17:22.119
As I said at the start of this episode, Meyer

253
00:17:22.200 --> 00:17:25.839
had represented Joseph Fritzel during his trial, where he was

254
00:17:25.920 --> 00:17:30.400
convicted for rape, incest, kidnapping, and the twenty four year

255
00:17:30.519 --> 00:17:34.640
enslavement of his own daughter in two thousand and nine.

256
00:17:34.680 --> 00:17:38.240
Also attached to both the Fritzel and Karanza cases was

257
00:17:38.279 --> 00:17:43.839
psychiatrist Heidi Kassner, who evaluated Fritzel for four months before

258
00:17:44.000 --> 00:17:47.960
his trial and spent thirty hours with Estebalie before hers.

259
00:17:49.119 --> 00:17:54.960
According to Kastner, Esteblie had quote a great comprehensive, multifaceted

260
00:17:55.000 --> 00:17:59.839
personality disorder and was at considerable risk for killing again

261
00:18:00.039 --> 00:18:03.119
if she did not have therapy. According to The Times

262
00:18:03.119 --> 00:18:07.960
Colonist and the BBC reported that Castner believed there was

263
00:18:08.000 --> 00:18:11.119
a higher than average chance that es to police could

264
00:18:11.200 --> 00:18:15.359
kill again. During her testimony, according to The Leader Post,

265
00:18:16.000 --> 00:18:20.240
Estebolice claimed that both men had demeaned her. Hulgar had

266
00:18:20.319 --> 00:18:22.640
constantly yelled at her and made fun of her. German

267
00:18:22.839 --> 00:18:28.440
and Manfred was chronically unfaithful in their relationship. She also claimed,

268
00:18:28.440 --> 00:18:31.680
according to ABC International, that he forced her to get

269
00:18:31.680 --> 00:18:36.799
botox injections and work out to maintain her appearance throughout

270
00:18:36.839 --> 00:18:40.160
the short trial. The prosecution pointed to este Beliss's stony

271
00:18:40.200 --> 00:18:43.240
demeanor during the proceedings as evidence that she was on

272
00:18:43.440 --> 00:18:47.720
remorseful for her actions. As another detriment to her case.

273
00:18:47.920 --> 00:18:52.519
Her psychiatric evaluation described es to Belie as a princess

274
00:18:52.559 --> 00:18:55.480
who hopes to be saved by a prince. She had

275
00:18:55.519 --> 00:18:59.279
completely subordinated herself to her respective partners, but had not

276
00:18:59.319 --> 00:19:03.640
become happy. Since Estebalize is not able to end relationship

277
00:19:03.759 --> 00:19:07.440
she no longer wants, there are essentially only more deviant

278
00:19:07.480 --> 00:19:10.839
ways out. Suicide is out of the question for s

279
00:19:10.839 --> 00:19:13.039
to Belize, which is why the way out would be

280
00:19:13.119 --> 00:19:16.599
the elimination of the obstacle that stands in the way

281
00:19:16.640 --> 00:19:21.759
of a new and hopefully more advantageous relationship. Rudolph Meyer

282
00:19:21.839 --> 00:19:26.319
attempted during the trial to show that Steblice, while admittedly

283
00:19:26.480 --> 00:19:29.920
did kill her ex husband and partner, she was not

284
00:19:30.039 --> 00:19:34.000
in her right mind when she had done so. He argued,

285
00:19:34.039 --> 00:19:38.160
according to ABC International, that Esteblice was really a quote

286
00:19:38.319 --> 00:19:42.119
insecure and submissive person who tried to present herself as

287
00:19:42.200 --> 00:19:46.839
perfect to retain her partners. Meyer also argued that she

288
00:19:46.960 --> 00:19:50.519
was under the impluence of various prescribed medications at the

289
00:19:50.559 --> 00:19:54.960
time of the murders. He alleged that s the Belice

290
00:19:55.000 --> 00:19:57.960
lived in a constant state of fear that caused tachocardia,

291
00:19:58.240 --> 00:20:01.559
so she was prescribed five to medications that she took

292
00:20:01.640 --> 00:20:05.759
three times a day to combat this, including any depressants

293
00:20:05.799 --> 00:20:10.799
and medications to manage schizophrenia. However, the dosage she was

294
00:20:10.880 --> 00:20:14.599
taking for schizophrenia should have been much higher than what

295
00:20:14.799 --> 00:20:18.079
was allegedly prescribed, at least in order for it to

296
00:20:18.079 --> 00:20:22.400
be effective. When the Italian police officer who arrested Esteblice

297
00:20:22.480 --> 00:20:25.960
got on the stand, he maintained that this was not true.

298
00:20:26.640 --> 00:20:29.880
Establis was not taking any medication at the time she

299
00:20:30.000 --> 00:20:34.160
was arrested, and had confessed to him during interrogation that

300
00:20:34.279 --> 00:20:37.400
she had shot Huger multiple times to ensure that he

301
00:20:37.519 --> 00:20:42.759
was really dead. Former partners of Establie also testified, though

302
00:20:42.839 --> 00:20:46.200
her husband Roland refused, maintaining that he believed her to

303
00:20:46.319 --> 00:20:50.960
be innocent, and one claim that she was fairly submissive,

304
00:20:51.240 --> 00:20:54.559
always doing what she was told, while another claimed she

305
00:20:54.799 --> 00:20:58.720
was quote loving, kind and friendly. He said he never

306
00:20:58.759 --> 00:21:02.200
noticed any strange behavior from her, but did acknowledge that

307
00:21:02.319 --> 00:21:07.240
she didn't seem authentic she always wanted to be perfect.

308
00:21:07.960 --> 00:21:10.599
This man also claimed that he didn't think that Manfred

309
00:21:10.680 --> 00:21:13.160
was a good fit fores to Belie and told her this,

310
00:21:13.519 --> 00:21:17.279
but she allegedly said, quote she wanted a man and

311
00:21:17.400 --> 00:21:20.839
he wanted an ice cream shop. On November twenty second,

312
00:21:20.920 --> 00:21:24.720
twenty twelve, as to Belie, Cadanza was sentenced to life

313
00:21:24.759 --> 00:21:29.480
imprisonment with subsequent preventative custody and remanded to an institution

314
00:21:29.680 --> 00:21:35.160
for mentally abnormal lawbreakers. Should she ever be considered cured,

315
00:21:35.359 --> 00:21:38.720
she could have the possibility of being relocated to a

316
00:21:38.759 --> 00:21:42.160
prison in Spain to be nearer to her son. Since

317
00:21:42.200 --> 00:21:45.920
her incarceration, though Establize has done little to help her

318
00:21:46.000 --> 00:21:51.319
case and portray herself as remorseful or reformed. In fact,

319
00:21:51.440 --> 00:21:54.519
she seems to bask in the media attention and her

320
00:21:54.599 --> 00:21:59.799
quote unquote newfound brand as the Ice Lady. In twenty fourteen,

321
00:21:59.880 --> 00:22:01.960
she wrote a memoir with the help of a journalist

322
00:22:02.039 --> 00:22:06.119
named Martina Prewin called My Two Lives the true story

323
00:22:06.160 --> 00:22:09.559
of the Ice Lady. In this book, in which she

324
00:22:09.599 --> 00:22:13.440
had described a tumultuous upbringing, she seems like she felt

325
00:22:13.440 --> 00:22:17.599
badly for taking the lives of two men. She wrote, quote,

326
00:22:17.880 --> 00:22:21.200
I killed two men whom I once loved. There is

327
00:22:21.319 --> 00:22:24.559
no way of glossing this over. I robbed two mothers

328
00:22:24.599 --> 00:22:28.640
of their sons. She claimed that she had only herself

329
00:22:28.680 --> 00:22:31.240
to blame and that she turned them into monsters who

330
00:22:31.279 --> 00:22:34.680
treated her badly. The book was met with a lot

331
00:22:34.720 --> 00:22:39.759
of criticism, rightfully so for Establie capitalizing on the murder

332
00:22:39.880 --> 00:22:44.640
she committed. But Martina Prawen and her publisher Edition A,

333
00:22:45.000 --> 00:22:48.640
defended the book, saying that Esta Bealie was receiving no

334
00:22:48.839 --> 00:22:51.839
money from the book sales and that she knew it

335
00:22:51.880 --> 00:22:55.880
wouldn't be right to take payment. Any money made from

336
00:22:55.920 --> 00:22:58.559
the book was allegedly to go into an account for

337
00:22:58.759 --> 00:23:04.200
her son. However, Estebalis's husband, Roland, was vocal that he

338
00:23:04.440 --> 00:23:08.279
did not approve of this new venture, saying that money

339
00:23:08.319 --> 00:23:13.039
should not be made from the dead. He also reportedly

340
00:23:13.079 --> 00:23:16.359
stated that Sablice had changed and he was no longer

341
00:23:16.440 --> 00:23:20.519
so sure of her innocence. She had become increasingly cold

342
00:23:20.559 --> 00:23:24.200
towards him since her incarceration, and she would ultimately file

343
00:23:24.279 --> 00:23:29.279
for divorce in twenty eighteen. Roland's hold Crone in twenty eighteen,

344
00:23:29.359 --> 00:23:33.920
quote est is ice cold and calculating. I let myself

345
00:23:33.960 --> 00:23:37.039
be fooled by her, believing her assertions that her two

346
00:23:37.079 --> 00:23:40.960
ex partners had treated her extremely badly and that her

347
00:23:41.000 --> 00:23:44.160
crimes had been committed in the effect. But I always

348
00:23:44.240 --> 00:23:47.960
knew she is not mentally ill, and since the summer

349
00:23:48.000 --> 00:23:52.440
of twenty fifteen, he has quote felt her hardness. She

350
00:23:52.559 --> 00:23:55.079
had lost interest in me because I was no longer

351
00:23:55.200 --> 00:23:59.200
useful to her, and suddenly behaved coldly and dismissively towards me.

352
00:24:00.160 --> 00:24:02.920
In twenty seventeen, it was announced that s the Belice

353
00:24:02.960 --> 00:24:06.079
was to be transferred to a formerly all male institution

354
00:24:06.400 --> 00:24:10.519
along with thirteen other female inmates in Aston, Upper Austria.

355
00:24:11.680 --> 00:24:15.799
According to The Mirror, this penitentiary holds ninety one inmates

356
00:24:15.839 --> 00:24:19.079
and allowed them to move freely, with single and double rooms,

357
00:24:19.599 --> 00:24:22.880
a lounge area with access to television, and the option

358
00:24:23.000 --> 00:24:26.640
for prisoners to prepare meals together. While they are allowed

359
00:24:26.640 --> 00:24:30.720
to roam relatively freely, they are watched around the clock,

360
00:24:31.279 --> 00:24:36.000
and the institution also has forty five nurses, eighteen therapists,

361
00:24:36.119 --> 00:24:40.440
four doctors, and eight prison guards on staff. Berner Dominik

362
00:24:40.480 --> 00:24:43.720
and Rudolph Meyer said in a joint statement about this quote,

363
00:24:43.920 --> 00:24:47.799
it is important that our client can finally be comprehensibly treated,

364
00:24:48.440 --> 00:24:50.759
and they hope that this would eventually lead to a

365
00:24:50.799 --> 00:24:54.400
transport back to Spain for us to Belie. Now, this

366
00:24:54.559 --> 00:24:59.279
transfer to Aston, where she could allegedly be treated more appropriately,

367
00:25:00.000 --> 00:25:03.200
she probably did not have the desired effect that her

368
00:25:03.279 --> 00:25:08.279
lawyers were hoping for. Anna Aston s the Belice changed

369
00:25:08.319 --> 00:25:13.359
her tune and fully embraced her isolady brand in a

370
00:25:13.400 --> 00:25:16.880
new memoir called Zell fourteen, which is her cell number,

371
00:25:17.319 --> 00:25:21.240
published in twenty eighteen and written by Bernard Solomon. After

372
00:25:21.480 --> 00:25:25.640
hundreds of conversations with Este Belie and her new boyfriend

373
00:25:25.960 --> 00:25:30.359
between the years of twenty fourteen and twenty eighteen, s

374
00:25:30.440 --> 00:25:33.200
the Beliefs in this new memoir claimed that she no

375
00:25:33.279 --> 00:25:37.559
longer was a woman betrayed and at the end of

376
00:25:37.599 --> 00:25:39.559
her rope by the men that claimed to love her.

377
00:25:41.039 --> 00:25:45.200
This time, she said quote, all people are murderers, only

378
00:25:45.319 --> 00:25:49.200
some have not yet started murdering, and most never do it.

379
00:25:49.279 --> 00:25:53.240
Means nothing if someone is unblemished. I was also blameless.

380
00:25:53.440 --> 00:25:56.559
Then I killed two men. Who says that someone who

381
00:25:56.599 --> 00:25:59.480
sits unblemish at a bus stop and reads the newspaper

382
00:25:59.559 --> 00:26:03.039
won't come a murder tomorrow. She also spoke of how

383
00:26:03.079 --> 00:26:05.359
she was very aware of how the public viewed her

384
00:26:05.480 --> 00:26:08.519
and did what she could to maintain her beauty well incarcerated,

385
00:26:09.519 --> 00:26:12.200
and how she keeps a record of every time she's

386
00:26:12.240 --> 00:26:16.880
in the news. She said, quote, eight years after my actions,

387
00:26:17.079 --> 00:26:20.039
I am on the front page. I like that. It

388
00:26:20.119 --> 00:26:23.720
gives me strength. It makes me proud. They should call

389
00:26:23.759 --> 00:26:27.680
me narcissistic, the ice Lady brand. It is also a

390
00:26:27.799 --> 00:26:33.000
value because of them. I'm not just any murderer. According

391
00:26:33.000 --> 00:26:36.119
to an article for Crone, she also admits that revenge

392
00:26:36.160 --> 00:26:40.279
for her mistreatment was not necessarily the only motive for

393
00:26:40.359 --> 00:26:44.960
Hulgar and Manford's murders. The Austrian media had it right.

394
00:26:45.039 --> 00:26:48.680
In twenty eleven, she was in debt to both men

395
00:26:48.799 --> 00:26:51.160
and paying them off would have meant losing her ice

396
00:26:51.200 --> 00:26:55.319
cream parlor. Quote. I told nonsense about myself for a

397
00:26:55.359 --> 00:26:57.720
long time because I didn't want to look like an

398
00:26:57.720 --> 00:27:01.000
ice cold killer. I kept seeking that I only murdered

399
00:27:01.000 --> 00:27:04.680
for money and a little bit of revenge, also out

400
00:27:04.720 --> 00:27:08.519
of revenge, a confession that will soon get me out

401
00:27:08.559 --> 00:27:12.720
of the psychonos. She hoped that by making these confessions

402
00:27:12.720 --> 00:27:14.759
she would prove that she was in her right mind

403
00:27:14.880 --> 00:27:17.920
and be granted her long desired transfer, where she would

404
00:27:17.960 --> 00:27:23.079
be able to petition for release after fifteen years. However,

405
00:27:23.319 --> 00:27:26.920
in the memoir, she also admits to an unapproved relationship

406
00:27:27.039 --> 00:27:31.359
with the man that I mentioned earlier, Martin, which is

407
00:27:31.480 --> 00:27:35.799
against the rules of the prison. They were allegedly engaged

408
00:27:35.799 --> 00:27:39.359
to be married, and because of this confession, her privileges

409
00:27:39.400 --> 00:27:44.559
in the institution were severely restricted, as de Belice was

410
00:27:44.559 --> 00:27:47.480
put on round the clock watch. Her visitations with her

411
00:27:47.519 --> 00:27:51.279
son were stopped, and she and Martin were separated. All

412
00:27:51.359 --> 00:27:55.920
conversations with Bernard Solomon were also prohibited, and her family

413
00:27:56.039 --> 00:27:59.119
threatened to break off all contact with her if she

414
00:27:59.279 --> 00:28:03.119
did not stop seeing Marten. As of today, there has

415
00:28:03.200 --> 00:28:06.839
been no new updates on Establize. It doesn't seem as

416
00:28:06.839 --> 00:28:09.319
if she has any new books in the works, although,

417
00:28:09.359 --> 00:28:12.880
as I said, her visits with Solomon were ultimately prohibited

418
00:28:12.920 --> 00:28:16.759
after Zelle fourteen's release, and it looks as if she

419
00:28:16.920 --> 00:28:21.519
is just serving her sentence, basking in her brand of

420
00:28:21.559 --> 00:28:25.559
the Ice Lady of Austria. It can certainly be said, though,

421
00:28:25.599 --> 00:28:28.680
that she doesn't feel any guilt for killing two men.

422
00:28:30.079 --> 00:28:32.200
Whether or not they didn't treat her correctly is up

423
00:28:32.279 --> 00:28:35.160
to debate, but she said herself that she could have

424
00:28:35.400 --> 00:28:40.359
just left. She blamed them for fueling a quote evil

425
00:28:40.480 --> 00:28:44.200
part of her that grew and grew until she murdered them.

426
00:28:44.640 --> 00:28:48.960
But she seems content with being called to killer. I

427
00:28:49.039 --> 00:28:54.559
do believe that the psychiatric evaluation was correct Establice portrays herself,

428
00:28:54.640 --> 00:28:57.720
at least based on that twenty eighteen memoir, as someone

429
00:28:57.759 --> 00:29:00.640
who could and would kill again and if she came

430
00:29:00.720 --> 00:29:03.559
up with a good enough reason to do so. As

431
00:29:03.559 --> 00:29:05.799
I mentioned when I covered the Lane's Angels of Death,

432
00:29:05.920 --> 00:29:11.559
Austria's criminal justice system focuses heavily on rehabilitation. But as

433
00:29:11.599 --> 00:29:16.200
to police Caranza, I strongly believe is not a killer

434
00:29:16.279 --> 00:29:22.640
that can be changed. It's who she inherently is. As always,

435
00:29:22.680 --> 00:29:25.039
I thank you so much for listening, and I hope

436
00:29:25.079 --> 00:29:29.359
you have a wonderful week and I will see you

437
00:29:29.799 --> 00:29:31.759
in the next chapter of the Book of the Death.

438
00:29:32.640 --> 00:29:37.880
Bye guys. Another page closed but the story isn't over

439
00:29:38.960 --> 00:29:42.000
for the families left behind, the pain doesn't end when

440
00:29:42.000 --> 00:29:45.640
the headlines fade. And for the victims, we owe them

441
00:29:45.640 --> 00:29:50.200
more than silence for our unsolved cases. If you have

442
00:29:50.319 --> 00:29:53.839
any information, please reach out to local authorities or visit

443
00:29:53.880 --> 00:29:57.960
our show notes for links and resources. Someone out there

444
00:29:58.079 --> 00:30:03.279
knows something, maybe it's you. Thank you for listening to

445
00:30:03.279 --> 00:30:06.200
the Book of the Dead. If this story moved or

446
00:30:06.240 --> 00:30:09.640
spoke to you in some way, talk about it, share it,

447
00:30:10.279 --> 00:30:15.000
keep their names alive. Until next time, I'm Courtney Liso.

448
00:30:16.000 --> 00:30:21.319
Stay safe, stay curious, and stay vigilant, and remember the

449
00:30:21.400 --> 00:30:25.319
dead may be gone, but their stories will not be forgotten.
