Chapter 122: A South African Champion Silenced-The Murder of Leighandre 'Baby Lee' Jegels

Chapter 122: A South African Champion Silenced-The Murder of Leighandre 'Baby Lee' Jegels

Leighandre “Baby Lee” Jegels was a rising star in South African boxing; an undefeated fighter, a national karate champion, and a young woman whose strength inspired thousands. But behind the scenes, she was fighting a far more dangerous opponent. In a case that ignited widespread anger and renewed attention to South Africa’s epidemic of gender-based violence, Leighandre's promising career was cut short by the man who was supposed to love and protect her, and she was failed by the very system designed to keep her safe.

00:01:25.879 --> 00:01:28.920
well known and others not so well known, but always

19
00:01:38.319 --> 00:01:41.120
Hello, Hello, Welcome to the next chapter in the Book

20
00:01:41.200 --> 00:01:46.280
to Dead. There are countless sports around the world where

21
00:01:46.359 --> 00:01:52.519
women's participation is either not encouraged or it's not taken seriously.

22
00:01:53.640 --> 00:01:57.000
For example, there are those that do not consider women's

23
00:01:57.040 --> 00:02:02.560
basketball a quote real sport. While female athletes have made

24
00:02:02.599 --> 00:02:06.400
great strides in being recognized for their athletic abilities over

25
00:02:06.400 --> 00:02:09.560
the last few decades, there are those that have not

26
00:02:09.840 --> 00:02:14.360
acknowledged women in traditionally male dominated fields until the last

27
00:02:14.400 --> 00:02:18.120
ten or fifteen years, even though there are women who

28
00:02:18.120 --> 00:02:23.120
have been dominating their respective industries per far longer. Specifically,

29
00:02:23.280 --> 00:02:28.439
I mean women in boxing. Boxing has long been considered

30
00:02:28.479 --> 00:02:33.680
a male specific sport, and anyone could see why. It

31
00:02:33.759 --> 00:02:37.120
involves a lot of power. It's a violent and dangerous

32
00:02:37.159 --> 00:02:40.599
sport and not one that many would consider a woman

33
00:02:40.719 --> 00:02:45.719
capable of excelling in. Women were unable to train seriously

34
00:02:45.840 --> 00:02:49.840
to enter the ring until the nineteen seventies, even though

35
00:02:49.879 --> 00:02:53.719
women have been documented as participating in amateur fights as

36
00:02:53.840 --> 00:02:57.879
far back as the seventeen hundreds, and they were featured

37
00:02:57.960 --> 00:03:02.680
as a display event in the nineteen Zeo for Olympics. However,

38
00:03:02.960 --> 00:03:07.159
boxing did not truly start becoming more accessible for female

39
00:03:07.240 --> 00:03:12.360
fighters until the nineteen eighties, when women submitted gender discrimination

40
00:03:12.560 --> 00:03:17.919
lawsuits against organizations like the Golden Globs Tournament arguing for

41
00:03:18.000 --> 00:03:22.159
the right for women to participate in amateur matches. By

42
00:03:22.240 --> 00:03:26.199
nineteen ninety three onward, the US and other European nations

43
00:03:26.240 --> 00:03:30.439
sanctioned women's amateur boxing and they were permitted to compete

44
00:03:30.599 --> 00:03:35.199
in tournaments, though women's boxing was not recognized as an

45
00:03:35.199 --> 00:03:38.719
Olympic sport until the two thousand and eight Olympic Games

46
00:03:38.759 --> 00:03:44.000
in Beijing, one hundred and four years after men's boxing

47
00:03:44.159 --> 00:03:48.759
was introduced in the Games. As women's boxing, both professional

48
00:03:48.840 --> 00:03:52.599
and amateur, has evolved over the decades, there are various

49
00:03:52.639 --> 00:03:55.680
women who have helped shape the sport as we know

50
00:03:55.800 --> 00:03:59.759
it today and have excelled in being a reckoning force

51
00:03:59.840 --> 00:04:04.280
with in the ring. Women like Leila Ali, Christy Martin,

52
00:04:04.560 --> 00:04:09.319
Lucia Reischker, and Katie Taylor helped propel women's boxing from

53
00:04:09.360 --> 00:04:13.240
a novelty to a sport finally beginning to be taken

54
00:04:13.360 --> 00:04:18.480
seriously and inspiring young women and girls to recognize and

55
00:04:18.519 --> 00:04:23.560
build upon their own strength and capabilities. One such woman

56
00:04:23.639 --> 00:04:27.439
who was just starting her career being recognized for her

57
00:04:27.480 --> 00:04:30.000
skill in the ring by the likes of Floyd Mayweather

58
00:04:30.439 --> 00:04:34.399
and was set to participate in international matches, her eyes

59
00:04:34.439 --> 00:04:37.759
on making her family and her home in South Africa,

60
00:04:37.879 --> 00:04:41.439
proud when her life was taken from her by the

61
00:04:41.560 --> 00:04:46.360
very man she begged police to protect her from. This

62
00:04:46.639 --> 00:04:51.439
is the murder of Leandra baby Lee Yehls. Leandre Yehils

63
00:04:51.480 --> 00:04:55.560
was born on February sixth, nineteen ninety four, in East London,

64
00:04:55.639 --> 00:04:58.720
in the Eastern Cape of South Africa, to Ansel and

65
00:04:58.839 --> 00:05:03.040
Rita Yehols. From the moment she was born, she was

66
00:05:03.160 --> 00:05:07.360
a fighter, born two months premature and weighing only one

67
00:05:07.439 --> 00:05:11.680
point five kilograms or just over three pounds. Though she

68
00:05:11.839 --> 00:05:15.240
was so small and struggled to feed, she would ultimately

69
00:05:15.399 --> 00:05:19.399
thrive and indicator that she was far stronger than anyone

70
00:05:19.439 --> 00:05:23.680
could have ever realized. She was the youngest of three children,

71
00:05:23.839 --> 00:05:27.040
and from a young age she excelled in her studies

72
00:05:27.079 --> 00:05:31.720
and athletics. She was consistently at the top of her class,

73
00:05:31.879 --> 00:05:37.519
balancing her coursework with her countless extracurricular activities. When Leandre

74
00:05:37.680 --> 00:05:40.399
was ten years old, according to Katee Town Girls, she

75
00:05:40.560 --> 00:05:45.120
began training in karate and she thrived. She went on

76
00:05:45.199 --> 00:05:48.040
to earn her black belts and held the national Karate

77
00:05:48.120 --> 00:05:51.399
Champion title for four years straight from two thousand and

78
00:05:51.480 --> 00:05:56.680
nine to twenty twelve. Also in twenty twelve, she graduated

79
00:05:56.680 --> 00:05:59.279
from high school again at the top of her class,

80
00:05:59.759 --> 00:06:02.079
and went on to get her Bachelor's of Science and

81
00:06:02.240 --> 00:06:07.160
Education degree from the University of Fort Hare. After university,

82
00:06:07.319 --> 00:06:10.920
Leandra became a primary school teacher, but she was still

83
00:06:11.040 --> 00:06:16.879
incredibly passionate about karate. However, as much as she loved it,

84
00:06:16.959 --> 00:06:20.720
she did want a new challenge. While at Fort Hare,

85
00:06:20.879 --> 00:06:25.879
boxing promoter and Deile Sidinile saw Leandra practicing her karate

86
00:06:26.000 --> 00:06:30.240
at the university's boxing gym and admired her clear talent,

87
00:06:30.920 --> 00:06:36.199
which was so apparent at just nineteen years old. And

88
00:06:36.279 --> 00:06:40.279
Delay urged Leandre to consider making the transition to boxing,

89
00:06:40.800 --> 00:06:44.560
an idea her father, Ansel, was not thrilled with, but

90
00:06:44.879 --> 00:06:48.000
at the encouragement of her mother, Leandra agreed to try

91
00:06:48.040 --> 00:06:52.160
it out. According to an article for Iowel, Leandre told

92
00:06:52.199 --> 00:06:55.920
and Delay quote, just one fight. If I like it,

93
00:06:56.000 --> 00:07:00.360
I'll do it. That one fight open Leandre's eyes a

94
00:07:00.600 --> 00:07:06.079
whole new world. She loved boxing, but not only that.

95
00:07:06.120 --> 00:07:10.759
She was a phenomenal fighter. In just two years, Leandra

96
00:07:10.839 --> 00:07:14.959
catapulted herself from an amateur boxer just starting out to

97
00:07:15.040 --> 00:07:18.959
an honordefeated champion, winning all nine of her fights from

98
00:07:19.040 --> 00:07:23.600
twenty sixteen to twenty seventeen. In June of twenty sixteen,

99
00:07:23.720 --> 00:07:27.680
she won the South African Junior Bantomweight championship at twenty

100
00:07:27.720 --> 00:07:33.000
two years old, dominating against her more experienced opponent. With

101
00:07:33.079 --> 00:07:36.079
her journey to a global title well within her horizons,

102
00:07:36.279 --> 00:07:40.040
she told News twenty four quote, I am extremely happy

103
00:07:40.079 --> 00:07:43.079
with the way my boxing career is shaping up. Not

104
00:07:43.199 --> 00:07:46.399
so long ago, I was an unknown contender in the ratings,

105
00:07:46.560 --> 00:07:50.120
and now I'm a national champion. My aim is to

106
00:07:50.160 --> 00:07:54.439
punch my way into winning the world belt championship. She

107
00:07:54.600 --> 00:07:57.480
also credited much of her success to her new trainer,

108
00:07:57.519 --> 00:08:01.000
boy Boy Mpulampula, who took her on as a mentee

109
00:08:01.120 --> 00:08:05.160
after she cut ties with her last trainer, former International

110
00:08:05.199 --> 00:08:10.639
Boxing Federation Junior featherweight champion, Vollani Bungu the previous November.

111
00:08:11.199 --> 00:08:13.360
She said, I'm a pull and Pula he helped me

112
00:08:13.480 --> 00:08:17.680
with the psychological aspects, like believing in myself so as

113
00:08:17.720 --> 00:08:20.879
to get motivated for the fight. This helped me win.

114
00:08:21.480 --> 00:08:23.759
I believe this will lead me to being crowned the

115
00:08:23.800 --> 00:08:29.120
world queen soon. Her clear potential attracted attention from boxing

116
00:08:29.199 --> 00:08:33.360
legends all over the world, and in twenty seventeen, she

117
00:08:33.600 --> 00:08:37.120
was invited to Las Vegas by Floyd Mayweather to train

118
00:08:37.240 --> 00:08:42.759
at his gym, an opportunity Leandra couldn't pass up. After

119
00:08:42.840 --> 00:08:46.480
training and sparring with boxing legends in Vegas, she returned

120
00:08:46.480 --> 00:08:51.559
home excited for her next fight, though Leandra also had

121
00:08:51.639 --> 00:08:56.240
something else to look forward to a new relationship. In

122
00:08:56.320 --> 00:08:59.360
twenty eighteen, when she was twenty four years old, Leandre

123
00:08:59.480 --> 00:09:02.360
was training her local gym when she met thirty six

124
00:09:02.480 --> 00:09:06.559
year old Bulilani Mayanka, a police officer who was as

125
00:09:06.600 --> 00:09:10.919
dedicated to the sport as she was, though he was

126
00:09:10.960 --> 00:09:13.960
twelve years her senior. They bonded over their love of

127
00:09:14.039 --> 00:09:18.720
boxing and karate, and Leandra was impressed with Bulilani's focus

128
00:09:18.720 --> 00:09:23.480
and hard work ethic. When Leandro and Bulilani started dating,

129
00:09:23.679 --> 00:09:27.919
the Yechels had some concerns about the relationship. They worried

130
00:09:27.960 --> 00:09:31.120
about the age gap between the two and also found

131
00:09:31.120 --> 00:09:34.759
the comments he made where he seemed to be proud

132
00:09:35.080 --> 00:09:39.919
of people he had killed in the line of duty troubling. However,

133
00:09:40.559 --> 00:09:44.799
Leandre assured her parents that she really liked Bulilani, and

134
00:09:45.159 --> 00:09:48.559
since their daughter had always displayed very good judgment and

135
00:09:48.600 --> 00:09:53.440
trusted her instincts. They relented and supported her new relationship.

136
00:09:54.519 --> 00:09:59.000
Bulailani at first seemed very encouraging of Leandra's dedication not

137
00:09:59.039 --> 00:10:01.639
only to training but to her job as a teacher,

138
00:10:02.440 --> 00:10:07.000
and they even moved in together. But soon the facade

139
00:10:07.080 --> 00:10:10.480
started to crack and a darker side of him started

140
00:10:10.519 --> 00:10:16.600
to show. Pretty quickly, Leandre's relationship devolved into something terrifying.

141
00:10:17.240 --> 00:10:23.600
Bulilani was manipulative and controlling, taking Leandra's bank card, refusing

142
00:10:23.639 --> 00:10:26.720
to allow her to drive her car, and took over

143
00:10:26.960 --> 00:10:30.320
every aspect of her life until she was let go

144
00:10:30.440 --> 00:10:34.159
from her job. According to an interview Rita Yehls did

145
00:10:34.159 --> 00:10:39.879
with The Daily Dispatch, he was also incredibly violent, not

146
00:10:39.919 --> 00:10:44.120
only psychologically abusing Leandra, but sexually and physically abusing her

147
00:10:44.200 --> 00:10:48.080
as well. On the rare occasions that the two would

148
00:10:48.120 --> 00:10:50.919
visit on DeLay's boxing gym, he said he noticed that

149
00:10:51.000 --> 00:10:55.039
Leandre would be quote shaking in his company. I knew

150
00:10:55.080 --> 00:11:00.600
something wasn't right. Finally, after months of abuse, Leandra was

151
00:11:00.639 --> 00:11:03.200
able to find the courage to tell on Delay and

152
00:11:03.320 --> 00:11:07.440
her parents what was going on in her relationship. The

153
00:11:07.519 --> 00:11:10.279
threats to take her life at least once made in

154
00:11:10.320 --> 00:11:13.960
the presence of her parents. The beatings the control all

155
00:11:14.000 --> 00:11:16.840
of it, and Leandro was urged to take out an

156
00:11:16.960 --> 00:11:21.480
order of protection against Bulilani. After months of enduring abuse

157
00:11:21.519 --> 00:11:23.840
at the hands of her partner, Leandra went to the

158
00:11:23.879 --> 00:11:28.480
police and filed the order of protection. According to an

159
00:11:28.480 --> 00:11:32.600
interview on Selenriita gave to SABC News, the police were

160
00:11:32.840 --> 00:11:37.600
less than accommodating about serving Bulilani with the order. Rita

161
00:11:37.639 --> 00:11:40.840
said when they arrived at the station, the officer, who

162
00:11:41.000 --> 00:11:43.960
was a female, seemed reluctant to bring the papers to

163
00:11:44.000 --> 00:11:47.320
Bulilani as he was currently working and didn't want to

164
00:11:47.360 --> 00:11:52.000
embarrass him, so the officer called him to inform Bulilani

165
00:11:52.039 --> 00:11:56.679
who was being served. This infuriated the Yehls, as the

166
00:11:56.679 --> 00:12:00.960
threats Bulilani had made against Leandre had become increased terrifying.

167
00:12:02.279 --> 00:12:05.879
Ansel said, quote, this guy threatened her prior and he

168
00:12:06.039 --> 00:12:09.720
said he will kill her and himself. After he said

169
00:12:09.759 --> 00:12:14.000
if he can't have her, no one will. One would

170
00:12:14.080 --> 00:12:17.039
hope that based on the information the Yahals provided to

171
00:12:17.080 --> 00:12:21.519
get the order of protection, the police would do something productive.

172
00:12:21.600 --> 00:12:25.679
In response, Ansel said that he had hoped Bulilani's superiors

173
00:12:25.720 --> 00:12:30.039
would at minimum relieve him of his weapon and perhaps

174
00:12:30.039 --> 00:12:33.200
put him on desk duty or provide him with some

175
00:12:33.240 --> 00:12:37.720
sort of counseling, But Bulilani was permitted to continue working

176
00:12:37.759 --> 00:12:40.960
out on the streets with the gun and seemed to

177
00:12:41.039 --> 00:12:44.039
have no sort of restrictions placed on him to make

178
00:12:44.120 --> 00:12:49.960
sure people were kept safe. Unfortunately, the situation Leandre was experiencing,

179
00:12:50.000 --> 00:12:53.440
with the police's lack of initiative in helping her, as

180
00:12:53.440 --> 00:12:57.519
well as the domestic violence situation itself, was not abnormal.

181
00:12:58.200 --> 00:13:02.759
South Africa, while ab beautiful country with the robust wildlife,

182
00:13:03.039 --> 00:13:07.840
stunning beaches and vineyards, and a vibrant culture, is also

183
00:13:07.919 --> 00:13:11.440
a country with the highest rates of gender based violence

184
00:13:11.440 --> 00:13:17.519
in femicide. In a study presented by doctor napum Milelo Zungo,

185
00:13:17.720 --> 00:13:20.799
who is the Strategic Lead in the Public Health Society's

186
00:13:20.879 --> 00:13:24.559
and Belonging Research Division of the Human Sciences Research Council,

187
00:13:25.279 --> 00:13:28.919
during the twenty twenty four to sixteen Days of Activism campaign,

188
00:13:29.320 --> 00:13:32.320
it was found that thirty three point one percent of

189
00:13:32.519 --> 00:13:36.840
all women aged eighteen years or older had experienced physical

190
00:13:36.919 --> 00:13:41.240
violence in their lifetime. If you break this percentage into

191
00:13:41.240 --> 00:13:45.080
a number based on South Africa's population. This is estimated

192
00:13:45.120 --> 00:13:48.559
to be seven million, three hundred and ten thousand, three

193
00:13:48.759 --> 00:13:53.399
hundred and eighty nine women who have endured violence, regardless

194
00:13:53.480 --> 00:13:59.320
of their relationship status. Lifetime physical violence was higher among

195
00:13:59.399 --> 00:14:02.519
Black Africas women and higher among women who were not

196
00:14:02.639 --> 00:14:05.799
married but living with their partners compared to those who

197
00:14:05.879 --> 00:14:11.360
were married or single. Additionally, nine point nine percent of women,

198
00:14:11.480 --> 00:14:16.480
regardless of their relationship status, experienced sexual violence in their lifetime,

199
00:14:17.000 --> 00:14:20.200
which would translate to roughly two million, one hundred and

200
00:14:20.279 --> 00:14:23.919
fifty thousand, three hundred and forty two women in South Africa.

201
00:14:25.159 --> 00:14:28.519
The rate of violence against women in South Africa is

202
00:14:28.720 --> 00:14:32.200
so high, in fact, that on the twentieth of November,

203
00:14:32.639 --> 00:14:35.840
six days ago as of one year hearing this, the

204
00:14:35.960 --> 00:14:40.519
National Disaster Management Center called gender based violence a national

205
00:14:40.639 --> 00:14:45.919
disaster following a quote thorough reassessment of previous reports and

206
00:14:46.039 --> 00:14:49.960
updated submissions from organizations of state as well as civil

207
00:14:50.080 --> 00:14:55.639
organizations after countrywide protests this past Friday, as well as

208
00:14:55.639 --> 00:14:59.960
the participation from those living in Eswatini, Kenya and Namibi.

209
00:15:01.039 --> 00:15:05.240
Gender based violence, according to South African President Cyril Ramaphosa,

210
00:15:05.919 --> 00:15:11.559
was previously declared a national crisis in twenty nineteen, according

211
00:15:11.559 --> 00:15:14.639
to the BBC, women are killed at a rate five

212
00:15:14.799 --> 00:15:19.960
times higher than the global average. While there are laws

213
00:15:20.000 --> 00:15:22.799
and policies in place to try and combat the alarming

214
00:15:22.879 --> 00:15:26.759
increase in violence against women in South Africa, the study

215
00:15:26.799 --> 00:15:30.759
conducted by the Human Scientists Research Council showed that the

216
00:15:30.840 --> 00:15:35.440
data reveals deeply ingrained gender norms and power dynamics, with

217
00:15:35.559 --> 00:15:40.399
strong cultural reinforcement of traditional gender rules and a troubling

218
00:15:40.480 --> 00:15:44.639
acceptance of male aggression and dominance. In a twenty twenty

219
00:15:44.679 --> 00:15:48.759
four article for Human Rights Watch, this study also showed

220
00:15:48.840 --> 00:15:53.200
that men had disturbing opinions surrounding women in violence perpetrated

221
00:15:53.240 --> 00:15:58.200
against them. Almost seventy percent of men quote said a

222
00:15:58.240 --> 00:16:02.320
wife should obey her husband, and fifteen percent felt a

223
00:16:02.399 --> 00:16:05.840
husband had the right to punish his wife for wrongdoings.

224
00:16:06.879 --> 00:16:10.039
Nearly ten percent held the false idea that women are

225
00:16:10.080 --> 00:16:13.519
often to blame if they were raped, and twelve percent

226
00:16:13.759 --> 00:16:17.799
wrongly believe if a woman does not physically resist it

227
00:16:17.879 --> 00:16:23.200
is not rape. Gender based violence is an increasingly growing problem,

228
00:16:23.440 --> 00:16:26.639
and as of today, there's not enough being done to

229
00:16:26.759 --> 00:16:31.840
combat it by police or the government. Women have resorted

230
00:16:31.840 --> 00:16:35.360
to obtaining gun licenses so that if they are attacked,

231
00:16:35.600 --> 00:16:40.879
they have something powerful to fight back with. Leandre Yechels

232
00:16:40.879 --> 00:16:44.559
didn't have the opportunity to fight back. She had trusted

233
00:16:44.559 --> 00:16:48.279
the police to enforce the protective order, and they didn't.

234
00:16:49.399 --> 00:16:55.039
After Bulilani was served, or more accurately warned, Leandre attempted

235
00:16:55.080 --> 00:16:58.600
to resume her day to day life, but she remained

236
00:16:58.679 --> 00:17:03.759
fearful of her surrounds, as did her parents. Bulilani was

237
00:17:03.960 --> 00:17:07.960
furious about the restraining order and had resorted to stalking

238
00:17:08.039 --> 00:17:10.799
Leandra as she ran errands and went to the gym.

239
00:17:11.880 --> 00:17:15.759
She never went anywhere by herself. Typically Rita or Ansel

240
00:17:15.799 --> 00:17:18.440
would accompany her where she needed to go. But as

241
00:17:18.480 --> 00:17:21.839
the months passed, it seemed as if Bulilani had lost

242
00:17:22.000 --> 00:17:27.559
interest and suddenly his presence wasn't a constant threat. Leandra

243
00:17:27.640 --> 00:17:30.279
started to get her spark back. She had a renewed

244
00:17:30.319 --> 00:17:33.279
interest in training again and looked forward to getting in

245
00:17:33.319 --> 00:17:35.920
the ring for a fight schedule to take place in

246
00:17:36.039 --> 00:17:40.720
July twenty nineteen in Saudi Arabia, a country where women's

247
00:17:40.720 --> 00:17:46.440
boxing seemed to finally be getting approval from their government. However,

248
00:17:46.640 --> 00:17:49.039
the match would go on to be canceled after a

249
00:17:49.160 --> 00:17:54.440
ban on women's boxing was implemented, and though disappointed, she

250
00:17:54.519 --> 00:17:57.960
looked towards a different fight to make her comeback, this

251
00:17:58.039 --> 00:18:03.599
time scheduled in October in India. She started training Missilani Tete,

252
00:18:03.759 --> 00:18:07.440
the WBO bantamweight world champion, to prepare for the match

253
00:18:08.039 --> 00:18:12.680
and was excited to further her boxing career when everything changed.

254
00:18:13.559 --> 00:18:17.200
On August thirtieth, twenty nineteen, the second to last day

255
00:18:17.240 --> 00:18:21.400
of Women's Month in South Africa, Leandre called Tete and

256
00:18:21.440 --> 00:18:23.599
asked if he would bring her to the training gym

257
00:18:23.720 --> 00:18:27.960
in Indensane, but he wasn't planning on training himself that day.

258
00:18:28.319 --> 00:18:33.440
He suggested that Rita drive Leandra instead. According to Rita,

259
00:18:33.920 --> 00:18:37.559
as the two drove into Indensane, they noticed the white

260
00:18:37.599 --> 00:18:43.160
Mercedes Benz tailgating them. Initially, Rita assumed the driver was

261
00:18:43.200 --> 00:18:45.759
just trying to pass them and she moved over to

262
00:18:45.759 --> 00:18:49.960
give them space, but the driver stayed behind them, and

263
00:18:50.079 --> 00:18:53.880
Leandra realized that the driver of the Mercedes was Bulilani.

264
00:18:55.279 --> 00:18:58.039
She told her mother and Rita sped up, attempting to

265
00:18:58.079 --> 00:19:00.799
lose him, but he was able to open take them,

266
00:19:01.119 --> 00:19:04.920
and Rita attempted to make a U turn, but due

267
00:19:04.960 --> 00:19:08.119
to the heavy traffic, Bulilani had enough time to exit

268
00:19:08.200 --> 00:19:12.839
his vehicle and approach Leandra's car, a gun clearly visible

269
00:19:12.920 --> 00:19:16.920
in his hand. He went to the driver's side and

270
00:19:16.960 --> 00:19:20.119
shot at Rita three times, hitting her once near the

271
00:19:20.160 --> 00:19:23.920
eye and once in the arm. Rita managed to start

272
00:19:23.960 --> 00:19:27.440
driving again, and Leandra begged her mother to pull over

273
00:19:27.559 --> 00:19:31.359
so she could drive instead, but Rita refused, saying they

274
00:19:31.400 --> 00:19:35.880
would waste precious time switching seats. Rita was able to

275
00:19:35.960 --> 00:19:38.720
drive a bit longer, but as she lost more blood,

276
00:19:38.799 --> 00:19:42.240
she started to lose consciousness and pulled over, fearing that

277
00:19:42.319 --> 00:19:44.680
she would put others in danger if she attempted to

278
00:19:44.720 --> 00:19:49.319
continue on. According to a witness named Ben Rexana, who

279
00:19:49.400 --> 00:19:53.079
had been behind the Bulilani's car during the shooting, He

280
00:19:53.319 --> 00:19:57.079
said that Bulilani quote got out and slowly walked toward

281
00:19:57.119 --> 00:20:00.079
her car with a gun in his hand. He just

282
00:20:00.119 --> 00:20:02.519
fired three shots at her in the driver's seat, as

283
00:20:02.519 --> 00:20:04.559
if there was nothing wrong with what he was doing.

284
00:20:05.400 --> 00:20:07.839
He then turned around and looked at the other cars

285
00:20:07.839 --> 00:20:12.119
before going back to his vehicle. Rickxana confirmed that Bulilani

286
00:20:12.160 --> 00:20:14.720
got in his car and followed Rita and Leandra as

287
00:20:14.759 --> 00:20:18.039
they drove away. Pulling off and getting out of his Mercedes.

288
00:20:18.079 --> 00:20:22.240
After Rita stopped driving, Biandra got out of the car

289
00:20:22.279 --> 00:20:25.200
to face Bulilani, but before she could reach him, he

290
00:20:25.359 --> 00:20:30.440
fired three more shots and she collapsed, dying at the scene.

291
00:20:30.799 --> 00:20:33.839
Bulilani then got back in his car and drove away.

292
00:20:34.960 --> 00:20:38.440
Now witnesses had called police when the first shots were made,

293
00:20:38.640 --> 00:20:43.480
but even as police officers demanded he pull over, Bulilani

294
00:20:43.519 --> 00:20:47.440
continued to drive, leading them on a forty mile chase

295
00:20:47.480 --> 00:20:52.079
before he was ultimately apprehended when he crashed into another vehicle,

296
00:20:52.759 --> 00:20:56.599
killing twenty nine year old petty clinic nurse Aulta Alatta

297
00:20:56.720 --> 00:21:00.839
and twenty nine year old Hamburg Liberians see Asanga Deyamani.

298
00:21:01.519 --> 00:21:06.400
A third passenger was unnamed but survived the crash. Bulilani

299
00:21:06.440 --> 00:21:09.440
was arrested and taken to the hospital for his injuries,

300
00:21:09.960 --> 00:21:12.680
and Rito was also brought to the hospital, where she

301
00:21:12.880 --> 00:21:16.319
was sent to the intensive care unit. According to the

302
00:21:16.400 --> 00:21:20.240
Daily Dispatch, when asked why Bulilani was permitted to keep

303
00:21:20.240 --> 00:21:24.480
his firearm after a restraining order was issued against him,

304
00:21:24.640 --> 00:21:29.799
Independent Police Investigated Director at spokesperson Santanga Sesa said, quote

305
00:21:30.319 --> 00:21:33.799
that is the internal processes of SAPs and we do

306
00:21:33.920 --> 00:21:38.400
not get involved in the operational dealings of SAPs and

307
00:21:38.759 --> 00:21:43.279
SAPs is the South African Police Service. Two days after

308
00:21:43.400 --> 00:21:47.000
Leandre's death, the Parliament of the Republic of South Africa's

309
00:21:47.039 --> 00:21:51.880
Committee on Education and Technology, Sports, Arts and Cultures released

310
00:21:51.880 --> 00:21:57.240
a statement extending their condolences to Leandra's family, friends and colleagues,

311
00:21:57.839 --> 00:22:02.039
with the committee chairperson Mama gasse By Naka Belongs saying quote,

312
00:22:02.640 --> 00:22:05.799
this shocking incident has robbed a young woman of a

313
00:22:05.839 --> 00:22:09.720
bright future, a family of a beloved daughter, and the

314
00:22:09.839 --> 00:22:13.799
world of a boxing star. Baby Lee was not just

315
00:22:13.839 --> 00:22:16.759
a hero to many women across the world, but shattered

316
00:22:16.799 --> 00:22:19.440
the opinions of those who think that females do not

317
00:22:19.519 --> 00:22:23.559
belong to boxing. As the Women's Month draws to an end,

318
00:22:23.799 --> 00:22:26.799
this incident is an example of the harsh realities of

319
00:22:26.839 --> 00:22:31.519
abuse and violence against so many women. Ahead of Bolilani's quarte,

320
00:22:31.559 --> 00:22:35.799
the Monday after Leandra's murder, Boxing South Africa chair person

321
00:22:35.960 --> 00:22:41.440
Melfistani Nakatani made a statement acknowledging the devastating loss of Leandre,

322
00:22:42.160 --> 00:22:45.400
who had worked so hard to make her country proud

323
00:22:45.480 --> 00:22:49.400
in the ring, also acknowledging how cruel it was for

324
00:22:49.440 --> 00:22:52.640
her to lose her life during a time quote when

325
00:22:52.680 --> 00:22:56.359
the entire nation is busy bracing itself to celebrate the

326
00:22:56.440 --> 00:23:00.119
last weekend of the month of Women. He went on

327
00:23:00.200 --> 00:23:03.160
to say, quote, it is disturbing that as we end

328
00:23:03.160 --> 00:23:05.599
the month that is supposed to honor women, we have

329
00:23:05.759 --> 00:23:09.880
seen more death, more abuse, and more missing young women.

330
00:23:10.759 --> 00:23:14.200
It is also disturbing that violence has been normalized in

331
00:23:14.240 --> 00:23:17.200
this country due to a lack of law enforcement and

332
00:23:17.400 --> 00:23:22.160
of the judicial system in playing their roles. Now, Buolilani

333
00:23:22.240 --> 00:23:25.880
Manyaka would never much to the dismay of those that

334
00:23:26.000 --> 00:23:29.480
loved and warned Leandra nake it to his court date.

335
00:23:30.279 --> 00:23:32.880
On the day he was to appear in court, Bulilani

336
00:23:33.000 --> 00:23:37.000
died as a result of his injuries from the car crash,

337
00:23:37.079 --> 00:23:39.319
and while it was comforting to know that he would

338
00:23:39.319 --> 00:23:42.960
never have the opportunity to harm another woman, the Yachls

339
00:23:43.000 --> 00:23:47.559
were denied an opportunity to face their daughter's killer. Rita,

340
00:23:47.599 --> 00:23:51.319
who had thankfully made a full recovery and ansel, told

341
00:23:51.559 --> 00:23:55.000
SA NBC that they would be pursuing legal advice about

342
00:23:55.039 --> 00:23:58.880
what could be done to hold the SAPs responsible in

343
00:23:59.039 --> 00:24:03.119
some way for failing to protect their daughter and enforce

344
00:24:03.200 --> 00:24:07.359
the order of protection, though whether or not they proceeded

345
00:24:07.400 --> 00:24:11.799
with a suit is unknown. In the immediate aftermath of

346
00:24:11.880 --> 00:24:15.960
Leandra's death, thousands of protesters gathered on the streets of

347
00:24:16.039 --> 00:24:20.279
Cape Town, demanding the government do something about the rampant

348
00:24:20.359 --> 00:24:25.559
violence being perpetuated against women. Leandra was the second woman

349
00:24:25.640 --> 00:24:28.119
killed in a matter of days at the hands of

350
00:24:28.160 --> 00:24:32.559
a man, and citizens were outraged and wanted action taken.

351
00:24:33.599 --> 00:24:37.680
President Ramafosa acknowledged that quote, it is a crime against

352
00:24:37.720 --> 00:24:40.519
their common humanity. We have heard the calls of the

353
00:24:40.559 --> 00:24:45.000
women of our country for action and justice. He also said,

354
00:24:45.039 --> 00:24:48.759
according to the Richmond Times, quote violence against women is

355
00:24:48.799 --> 00:24:52.759
a man's problem. It is men who rape and kill women.

356
00:24:53.319 --> 00:24:57.680
Let us not look away. Unfortunately, as I mentioned earlier,

357
00:24:57.880 --> 00:25:02.440
violence against women in South Africa has only gotten worse.

358
00:25:03.480 --> 00:25:06.519
The year after Leandre's death, Rita spoke of how she

359
00:25:06.599 --> 00:25:09.559
and her family still struggled to cope with their loss

360
00:25:09.720 --> 00:25:13.079
and except that their daughter is gone, She said she

361
00:25:13.160 --> 00:25:17.279
was unable to watch boxing, the sport Leandre loved so much,

362
00:25:17.880 --> 00:25:21.000
and that Rita loved watching her daughter excel at because

363
00:25:21.000 --> 00:25:25.920
it was too painful. A memorial ceremony was conducted on

364
00:25:25.960 --> 00:25:29.119
the one year anniversary at the spot where Leandra died,

365
00:25:29.279 --> 00:25:33.640
attended by her family, her trainer, fellow boxers, and promoters

366
00:25:33.680 --> 00:25:37.920
to honor the anniversary, and in twenty twenty three, the

367
00:25:38.039 --> 00:25:41.920
Leandra Baby Lee Yuhles Recreational Park was opened as a

368
00:25:41.920 --> 00:25:47.079
way to honor her memory. Leandre Yuckles did everything a

369
00:25:47.200 --> 00:25:49.319
woman is told to do when they are in a

370
00:25:49.359 --> 00:25:53.680
domestic violence situation. She confided in those that could love

371
00:25:53.720 --> 00:25:56.640
and support her. She went to the police, she got

372
00:25:56.680 --> 00:26:01.200
the restraining order, and still, even with her being an

373
00:26:01.279 --> 00:26:05.759
active and deliberate threat to her life, the very people

374
00:26:05.799 --> 00:26:10.200
that were supposed to protect her didn't. She was failed

375
00:26:10.279 --> 00:26:13.920
miserably by the police who chose to warn a violent

376
00:26:14.000 --> 00:26:17.000
man about an order of protection against him, instead of

377
00:26:17.039 --> 00:26:21.599
making sure he stayed within its parameters. They allowed him

378
00:26:21.599 --> 00:26:24.920
to retain his firearm, and they did nothing to deter

379
00:26:25.119 --> 00:26:29.440
him from going after her. Leandre had so much life

380
00:26:29.559 --> 00:26:32.359
left to live at only twenty five years old, and

381
00:26:32.400 --> 00:26:35.960
a career that she thrived and excelled in, and the

382
00:26:36.039 --> 00:26:38.920
person that was not only supposed to love her but

383
00:26:39.079 --> 00:26:43.039
keep her safe as a police officer, ripped it all away.

384
00:26:44.359 --> 00:26:46.519
I know I have at least a few listeners in

385
00:26:46.559 --> 00:26:49.920
South Africa, so for those that are or may know

386

source notes below. As always, I thank you so much

397
00:27:33.759 --> 00:27:38.240
for listening. It was pretty appropriate to cover Leandre Yahol's

398
00:27:38.279 --> 00:27:42.519
story this week as this week is the annual sixteen

399
00:27:42.599 --> 00:27:47.359
Days of Activism in South Africa, whose purpose is to

400
00:27:47.440 --> 00:27:51.880
raise awareness and put a stop to gender based violence

401
00:27:52.039 --> 00:27:56.519
in the country. When I was researching her case, I

402
00:27:56.559 --> 00:27:59.000
didn't do it with the intention of posting it during

403
00:27:59.039 --> 00:28:03.599
the sixteen Days of Backism, but it was pretty serentipitous

404
00:28:03.640 --> 00:28:06.039
when I realized that it would be coming out or

405
00:28:06.039 --> 00:28:08.559
this episode would be coming out at the same time.

406
00:28:09.480 --> 00:28:12.880
As always, I hope you have a wonderful week. For

407
00:28:13.000 --> 00:28:17.519
my American listeners, Happy Thanksgiving and I will see you

408
00:28:17.839 --> 00:28:21.559
in the next chapter of the Book of the Dead. Bye, guys.

409
00:28:22.599 --> 00:28:27.599
Another page closed, But the story isn't over. For the

410
00:28:27.640 --> 00:28:31.920
families left behind, the pain doesn't end when the headline's fade.

411
00:28:32.079 --> 00:28:35.039
And for the victims, we owe them more than silence

412
00:28:36.319 --> 00:28:39.799
for our on solved cases. If you have any information,

413
00:28:40.039 --> 00:28:42.839
please reach out to local authorities or visit our show

415
00:28:48.519 --> 00:28:52.920
maybe it's you. Thank you for listening to the Book

416
00:28:52.960 --> 00:28:56.000
of the Dead. If this story moved or spoke to

417
00:28:56.039 --> 00:28:59.720
you in some way, talk about it, share it, keep

418
00:28:59.759 --> 00:29:05.319
the thing names alive. Until next time, I'm Courtney Liso.

00:29:12.440 --> 00:29:16.359
