Novela 10: Hannah Cranna, The Witch of Monroe w/ Rogue Darkness

Novela 10: Hannah Cranna, The Witch of Monroe w/ Rogue Darkness

As I work on a case that is far more involved than I originally thought, dive into the chilling legend of Hannah Cranna, often called the Wicked Witch of Monroe in this episode hosted by Raven of Rogue Darkness. Feared throughout 19th-century Connecticut, Hannah’s reputation was built on tales of witchcraft, curses, and paranormal misfortune said to befall anyone who crossed her. Even her death and burial became the stuff of haunted New England folklore, cementing her place in history as one of the region’s most infamous legends. Was Hannah Cranna truly a witch—or just a woman condemned by rumor and superstition?

Grim and Gruesome Raven. Let's go rogue and get right

16
00:01:05.879 --> 00:01:09.480
in to today's chilling crime, The case of the Twisted Killer,

17
00:01:09.799 --> 00:01:16.480
The Wicked Witch of Monroe, Hannah Krana. In the small

18
00:01:16.519 --> 00:01:19.879
town of Monroe, tucked away in the heart of Connecticut,

19
00:01:20.280 --> 00:01:24.599
lived a dark figure whose terrifying powers made the lives

20
00:01:24.599 --> 00:01:28.959
of those in Monroe a living hell. In fact, so

21
00:01:29.159 --> 00:01:32.439
powerful were her dark forces that locals who pass her

22
00:01:32.519 --> 00:01:37.519
graves leave crystals, coins, charms, and other trinkets by her

23
00:01:37.519 --> 00:01:41.040
tombstone so that her spirit does not follow them home

24
00:01:41.480 --> 00:01:46.120
and haunt them. Interestingly, although Hannah's grave is over one

25
00:01:46.200 --> 00:01:49.000
hundred and fifty years old, it still looks as if

26
00:01:49.040 --> 00:01:52.799
it were new, the writings so clear and readable, although

27
00:01:52.799 --> 00:01:55.280
other graves that lie next to her have worn away,

28
00:01:55.760 --> 00:02:00.599
leaving their identities a mystery. Perhaps Hannah Till wants the

29
00:02:00.640 --> 00:02:04.599
newer generation of Monroe to know exactly who she is.

30
00:02:05.719 --> 00:02:09.199
Although her dark deeds are so legendary they can hardly

31
00:02:09.560 --> 00:02:14.400
be forgotten. Hannah's story is well embedded in Connecticut culture,

32
00:02:14.800 --> 00:02:18.120
with whispers of her powers being told on Halloween night

33
00:02:18.639 --> 00:02:24.039
in books specifically related to Connecticut folklore, and tales exchanged

34
00:02:24.080 --> 00:02:29.639
amongst the locals of Monroe. Despite her death being over

35
00:02:29.680 --> 00:02:32.479
a century and a half ago, the legend of Hannah

36
00:02:32.560 --> 00:02:37.560
Crana lives on. Hannah's story did not truly begin until

37
00:02:37.560 --> 00:02:42.599
the mysterious death of her husband, Captain Joseph Hovey. Until

38
00:02:42.639 --> 00:02:46.280
that point, she led a truly reserved life, never fully

39
00:02:46.360 --> 00:02:51.120
mingling or making lifelong friendships in her small town. One day,

40
00:02:51.439 --> 00:02:54.719
her husband, a well respected figure in the local community,

41
00:02:55.080 --> 00:02:57.599
went out for a walk. Did he know on that

42
00:02:57.680 --> 00:02:59.960
fateful day it would be his last day on earth?

43
00:03:00.560 --> 00:03:05.000
For that day, Captain Joseph Hovey took a walk straight

44
00:03:05.080 --> 00:03:10.680
off of a cliff. His body was found crippled at

45
00:03:10.680 --> 00:03:14.039
the bottom of the cliff face, and soon the locals

46
00:03:14.039 --> 00:03:16.719
began to whisper that Hannah was a witch, one who

47
00:03:16.719 --> 00:03:18.919
had been plotting the death of her husband, and she

48
00:03:19.039 --> 00:03:21.960
bewitched him to walk off the cliff and fall to

49
00:03:22.039 --> 00:03:24.800
his doom, making it look like a suicide to clear

50
00:03:24.879 --> 00:03:28.879
her name. After all, Captain Hovey was a pillar of

51
00:03:28.919 --> 00:03:32.639
the community, an intelligent and respected captain. He knew the

52
00:03:32.639 --> 00:03:35.360
local area like the back of his hand. Why on

53
00:03:35.439 --> 00:03:38.000
earth would he walk off of a cliff unless he

54
00:03:38.080 --> 00:03:43.000
wasn't in his own right frame of mind. After the

55
00:03:43.039 --> 00:03:46.759
mysterious death of her husband, Hannah lived alone on top

56
00:03:46.800 --> 00:03:49.039
of a high hilltop in the middle of the woods.

57
00:03:49.639 --> 00:03:52.879
The only creature to keep her company was her large

58
00:03:52.919 --> 00:03:57.280
and imposing rooster named Old Borealis, named after the Greek

59
00:03:57.319 --> 00:04:03.280
god of winter. Old Borealis had cheplet glossy feathers and

60
00:04:03.360 --> 00:04:08.039
a scarlet red plume atop his head. The devoutly Christian

61
00:04:08.080 --> 00:04:10.759
locals were not fond of pets who were named after

62
00:04:10.840 --> 00:04:15.319
pagan gods, and they rumored that Old Burialis was Hannah's familiar.

63
00:04:16.399 --> 00:04:19.079
To those who are unfamiliar with what a familiar is,

64
00:04:19.759 --> 00:04:22.680
it is merely an animal that connects the witch with

65
00:04:22.800 --> 00:04:25.879
the other side, but many presume it to be much

66
00:04:25.959 --> 00:04:28.759
darker than that, claiming a witch is familiar to be

67
00:04:28.800 --> 00:04:32.959
an animal possessed by dark forces and presumed demonic energies.

68
00:04:34.600 --> 00:04:39.759
People often stereotyped cats, particularly black ones, as familiars of witches,

69
00:04:40.279 --> 00:04:42.639
but familiars can take on the shape of any animal

70
00:04:42.639 --> 00:04:45.680
that is bonded with a suspected witch, be it a cat,

71
00:04:46.079 --> 00:04:51.040
a toad, a rat, or even a rooster. The rumors

72
00:04:51.079 --> 00:04:54.639
spread that the midnight black plumage of Old Borealis signaled

73
00:04:54.720 --> 00:04:58.319
demonic energies and that hearing his piercing crow in the

74
00:04:58.439 --> 00:05:01.279
night meant that death was was coming to your door.

75
00:05:02.279 --> 00:05:06.000
In fact, Old Borealis was not like the other roosters.

76
00:05:06.040 --> 00:05:09.120
He only crowed during the witching hour at night, whereas

77
00:05:09.160 --> 00:05:13.240
normal roosters would crow at dawn when the morning comes.

78
00:05:14.560 --> 00:05:17.680
The Witching hour occurs every night between the hours of

79
00:05:17.720 --> 00:05:20.600
midnight and three am, and is said to be the

80
00:05:20.639 --> 00:05:23.759
time of night where paranormal activity is at its peak.

81
00:05:25.240 --> 00:05:28.240
The witch hunters of Connecticut began to whisper that Hannah

82
00:05:28.319 --> 00:05:31.800
Krana was performing satanic rituals during the Witching Hour, causing

83
00:05:31.839 --> 00:05:35.639
her familiar old Borealis to call loudly to summon the

84
00:05:35.680 --> 00:05:40.040
demonic forces, as if old Borealis was not enough to

85
00:05:40.040 --> 00:05:44.040
persuade the locals of some superstitious happenings. Hannah was rumored

86
00:05:44.040 --> 00:05:47.560
to be a vile and ill tempered old lady. The

87
00:05:47.639 --> 00:05:50.160
locals were said to dread running into her, for she

88
00:05:50.160 --> 00:05:54.519
would always ask for something, be it food, firewood, water,

89
00:05:54.720 --> 00:05:57.759
or supplies, and if a local dared to refuse for

90
00:05:57.800 --> 00:06:00.519
fear of associating with a witch, she would shake her

91
00:06:00.560 --> 00:06:03.879
cane and place a curse upon them, ruining their lives

92
00:06:04.120 --> 00:06:08.560
without a care in the world. Once Hannah was at

93
00:06:08.600 --> 00:06:12.120
home and the smell of a delicious, freshly baked pie

94
00:06:12.240 --> 00:06:16.240
drifted into her home and captivated her, so Hannah left

95
00:06:16.240 --> 00:06:20.639
her house, falling the delicious smell of fresh pastry until

96
00:06:20.680 --> 00:06:23.920
she came across a little quaint farmhouse where a farmer's

97
00:06:23.920 --> 00:06:28.839
wife was indeed baking fresh blueberry pie. The farmer's wife

98
00:06:28.879 --> 00:06:33.160
was hesitant, but also scared of Hannah's demonic powers, looking

99
00:06:33.199 --> 00:06:35.839
around her to make sure that nobody was watching. The

100
00:06:35.920 --> 00:06:39.560
farmer's wife then quickly shoved her tiniest, most meager pie

101
00:06:39.720 --> 00:06:42.720
into the hands of Hannah and quickly asked her to leave.

102
00:06:44.560 --> 00:06:47.720
Hannah was furious at this ill treatment and then cursed

103
00:06:47.720 --> 00:06:50.720
her for this selfish act. May you never bake a

104
00:06:50.720 --> 00:06:55.279
good pie again, thrusting her cane towards the farmer's wife.

105
00:06:55.560 --> 00:06:58.360
From that day on, any ingredients in the pies of

106
00:06:58.360 --> 00:07:01.800
the farmer's wife seemed to curdle and rot inside the pastry,

107
00:07:02.000 --> 00:07:06.480
making all of her customers feel ill. The farmer's wife

108
00:07:06.560 --> 00:07:09.519
had lost her joy and passion thanks to the presumed

109
00:07:09.560 --> 00:07:15.480
curse of Hannah Krana. Some locals attest that Hannah was

110
00:07:15.519 --> 00:07:18.800
not cruel all of the time. Legend recalls that during

111
00:07:18.800 --> 00:07:21.920
a long drought, another farmer went to Hannah's house and

112
00:07:22.000 --> 00:07:24.279
dropped to his knees in front of her, begging her

113
00:07:24.279 --> 00:07:26.439
to do something to bring the rain back to Monroe.

114
00:07:27.079 --> 00:07:29.800
Without the rain, his crops would not grow and he

115
00:07:29.839 --> 00:07:32.240
would not be able to feed his family, and the

116
00:07:32.279 --> 00:07:36.120
supplies of Monroe would suffer in the process. Hannah then

117
00:07:36.160 --> 00:07:39.560
stamped her cane on the floor and said, by sundown,

118
00:07:40.000 --> 00:07:43.160
rain will be granted. The farmer then went away from

119
00:07:43.160 --> 00:07:47.160
the house, grateful to still be alive, but unsure if

120
00:07:47.160 --> 00:07:51.480
his wish would actually be granted. Sure enough, though, as

121
00:07:51.519 --> 00:07:56.040
the sun set, thunderclouds gathered, bringing with it a tumultuous

122
00:07:56.120 --> 00:08:00.839
and violent storm. As the thunder and lightning shook the

123
00:08:00.879 --> 00:08:03.959
little houses of Monroe, the people did not feel scared,

124
00:08:04.439 --> 00:08:07.959
for thick sheets of rain was drenching the crops, watering them,

125
00:08:08.319 --> 00:08:12.360
bringing them back to life. The farmers had their wish,

126
00:08:12.519 --> 00:08:20.839
and Hannah had used her powers for good for a change. Eventually,

127
00:08:21.160 --> 00:08:23.600
on a dark night in December, it was time for

128
00:08:23.680 --> 00:08:30.160
her last living companion, Old Borealis, to leave the earthly plane.

129
00:08:30.439 --> 00:08:34.720
The locals witnessed a devastated Hannah, adorned and black, performing

130
00:08:34.759 --> 00:08:37.639
an elaborate funeral service to send her familiar to his

131
00:08:37.759 --> 00:08:41.519
resting place in the underworld. She buried him during the

132
00:08:41.519 --> 00:08:45.360
witching hour under the full moon. Wrapping her rooster in

133
00:08:45.399 --> 00:08:49.000
a black cloth, she laid an offering of flowers and

134
00:08:49.039 --> 00:08:52.960
placed candles around his burial site. The people in the

135
00:08:53.000 --> 00:08:56.639
town witnessed her walking through the streets in anguish, repeating,

136
00:08:57.039 --> 00:09:00.320
I will soon depart this life to join you, old Borealis,

137
00:09:00.879 --> 00:09:04.879
not her late husband, though Captain Hovey. The people of

138
00:09:04.960 --> 00:09:07.840
Monroe took this as a sign that their town would

139
00:09:07.840 --> 00:09:12.759
soon be freed from the ethereal powers of Hannah. The

140
00:09:12.840 --> 00:09:16.759
Monroe Historical Society stated that one day shortly after Christmas,

141
00:09:17.039 --> 00:09:19.720
a neighbor noticed that Hannah had not completed her daily

142
00:09:19.759 --> 00:09:24.480
stroll through the town. Wailing of her demise, she apprehensively

143
00:09:24.480 --> 00:09:28.039
approached Hannah's property, and, noticing that the door was wide open,

144
00:09:28.360 --> 00:09:33.279
took cautious steps inside. He then saw a shriveled, pale,

145
00:09:33.679 --> 00:09:36.960
weak body curled up in the living room, looking significantly

146
00:09:37.000 --> 00:09:40.159
different to the powerful physique that Hannah Crana used to inhabit.

147
00:09:41.399 --> 00:09:44.519
Groaning and moaning, the afflicted Hannah told the neighbor that

148
00:09:44.559 --> 00:09:47.320
the spirits were calling her to her grave and that

149
00:09:47.360 --> 00:09:51.919
she must leave soon. Hannah managed to whisper strict instructions

150
00:09:51.960 --> 00:09:54.799
to her burial to her neighbor, making the neighbors swear

151
00:09:54.840 --> 00:09:58.120
a solemn oath to follow the instructions or else be

152
00:09:58.200 --> 00:10:02.600
forever haunted. Her exact words were, I must not be

153
00:10:02.679 --> 00:10:05.440
buried until after the sun sets, and there must be

154
00:10:05.519 --> 00:10:08.639
multiple coffin bearers to carry me to my grave site.

155
00:10:09.080 --> 00:10:12.679
My wishes must be obeyed, or trouble, strife, and vexation

156
00:10:12.879 --> 00:10:16.759
shall fall upon you. The neighbors scurried away to gather strong,

157
00:10:16.879 --> 00:10:22.120
sturdy coffin bearers as he left. Hannah then died alone

158
00:10:22.639 --> 00:10:27.080
on the floor of her house upon the hill. Finding

159
00:10:27.120 --> 00:10:29.919
coffin bearers was not easy, though it was a small

160
00:10:29.960 --> 00:10:33.000
town and most feared the wrath of Hannah even from

161
00:10:33.039 --> 00:10:37.440
beyond the grave. The prospect of accidentally dropping the coffin

162
00:10:37.519 --> 00:10:40.279
was said to attract evil spirits to the coffin bears.

163
00:10:41.200 --> 00:10:43.679
The journey involved a five mile walk up and down

164
00:10:43.759 --> 00:10:50.320
hills and through Hannah's forest. Despite this, coffin bearers were assembled,

165
00:10:50.600 --> 00:10:53.480
and as they lifted Hannah's coffin, they carried her feet

166
00:10:53.559 --> 00:10:56.200
first out of the house, for they believed that if

167
00:10:56.240 --> 00:10:59.480
her body was removed head first, Hannah's spirit would be

168
00:10:59.519 --> 00:11:02.279
which the coffin bearers to follow her into the grave.

169
00:11:03.919 --> 00:11:06.799
As her funeral was in the deep dark Connecticut winter,

170
00:11:07.240 --> 00:11:11.879
the ground was laden with frost and ice. As the

171
00:11:11.879 --> 00:11:15.399
coffin bears slipped and trudged through the icy sludge with

172
00:11:15.440 --> 00:11:18.879
the weight of Hannah's coffin bearing upon their shoulders. About

173
00:11:18.879 --> 00:11:22.480
halfway through their journey, many became too treacherous to navigate,

174
00:11:22.919 --> 00:11:25.240
and a sled was fetched to place the coffin onto

175
00:11:25.320 --> 00:11:28.879
as the coffin bearers pulled the sled. The coffin was

176
00:11:28.919 --> 00:11:31.720
then placed on the sled and the coffin bearers resumed

177
00:11:31.720 --> 00:11:35.440
their journey to Hannah's resting place. As they took their

178
00:11:35.480 --> 00:11:39.240
first steps, the coffin began to tremble in shape, and

179
00:11:39.279 --> 00:11:43.879
then it slid off the sled, sliding backwards hundreds of

180
00:11:43.919 --> 00:11:47.799
feet towards Hannah's house, the opposite direction to where they

181
00:11:47.799 --> 00:11:53.759
were walking. Frustrated, the coffin bears ran after the escaping coffin.

182
00:11:54.320 --> 00:11:57.679
They two tripping and falling over the hazardous icy roads.

183
00:11:58.720 --> 00:12:02.679
Eventually they retreat leave the coffin, once again trudging back

184
00:12:02.679 --> 00:12:06.360
towards the sled and placing Hannah's coffin upon it. Desperate

185
00:12:06.360 --> 00:12:08.759
to resume their journey and to get out of the

186
00:12:08.840 --> 00:12:13.960
freezing cold, some people passing by even offered to sit

187
00:12:14.000 --> 00:12:16.720
on the coffin to prevent it from sliding off, which

188
00:12:16.759 --> 00:12:21.480
the coffin bears gladly accepted. As the journey resumed, the

189
00:12:21.519 --> 00:12:24.759
coffin bears attempted to pull the sled forward with Monroe

190
00:12:24.759 --> 00:12:28.159
locals perched atop the coffin to stop it from sliding backwards.

191
00:12:29.240 --> 00:12:32.080
This tactic seemed to work for a while. They managed

192
00:12:32.080 --> 00:12:35.080
to drag the coffin a few hundred feet, pleased with

193
00:12:35.120 --> 00:12:39.879
their progress, until just before they reached Hannah's final resting place,

194
00:12:40.519 --> 00:12:43.600
the coffin began to shake and rock, an almighty demonic

195
00:12:43.679 --> 00:12:47.799
roar emitting from inside the coffin. The coffin shook so

196
00:12:47.919 --> 00:12:50.600
violently that the locals were thrown onto the snowy road,

197
00:12:50.960 --> 00:12:57.039
and once again Hannah's coffin slid backwards. Terrified by Hannah's

198
00:12:57.080 --> 00:12:59.399
warning of the hecks that would befall them should her

199
00:12:59.480 --> 00:13:03.399
last wish be ignored, the terrified coffin bearers and townspeople

200
00:13:03.440 --> 00:13:07.279
decided finally they would all respect Hannah's wishes and carry

201
00:13:07.279 --> 00:13:11.360
her coffin by hand, no matter how heavy the coffin was,

202
00:13:12.960 --> 00:13:17.360
And therefore Hannah Crana Hovey was delivered to her final

203
00:13:17.440 --> 00:13:22.240
resting place after the sun had set. Her wishes were

204
00:13:22.320 --> 00:13:29.480
ultimately respected. As Hannah's coffin was lowered into the ground,

205
00:13:29.919 --> 00:13:33.360
a terrifying crack of thunder boomed across the sky, and

206
00:13:33.440 --> 00:13:38.320
a white hot thunderbolt illuminated the darkness with an almighty boom.

207
00:13:38.720 --> 00:13:42.279
Hannah's house had been struck by lightning, setting it on fire.

208
00:13:43.159 --> 00:13:45.559
Hannah's house was said to be engulfed in flames for

209
00:13:45.600 --> 00:13:48.840
several days, with a fire service of Monroe unable to

210
00:13:48.840 --> 00:13:53.039
put out such a rampant, raging fire. The firemen reported

211
00:13:53.080 --> 00:13:56.200
that the deepest depths of the fire glowed an eerie,

212
00:13:56.720 --> 00:14:00.600
bright green. But that was not the last that Hannah

213
00:14:00.639 --> 00:14:05.879
Krana stalk the streets of Monroe. Residents worn against driving

214
00:14:05.919 --> 00:14:09.759
past Hannah's grave at midnight, as a mysterious force possesses

215
00:14:09.799 --> 00:14:22.000
the wheel and will cause you to crash. Legend has

216
00:14:22.039 --> 00:14:25.519
it that you can still see a mysterious gray haired

217
00:14:25.519 --> 00:14:30.519
figure slowly sweeping through the Monroe forest. The ghost walks

218
00:14:30.559 --> 00:14:34.200
with her hands out begging. You can imagine what happens

219
00:14:34.200 --> 00:14:38.000
to those who say no to Hannah's ghost. So if

220
00:14:38.000 --> 00:14:41.000
you're passing by the sleepy town of Monroe, Connecticut. You

221
00:14:41.039 --> 00:14:44.080
should check out her gravestone yourself, but don't forget to

222
00:14:44.159 --> 00:14:48.120
leave something behind a little trinket or offering unless you

223
00:14:48.159 --> 00:15:02.639
want an uninvited visitor to follow you home. So that

224
00:15:02.840 --> 00:15:05.600
was the eerie tail of the infamous Witch of Monroe,

225
00:15:06.080 --> 00:15:09.279
Hannah Krana. Let me know what you think of this
